Lola's Cuban Food - Restaurant & Bar was a pleasant surprise. While there are many dining options in the DFW area, they often fall into the same category. So, I was excited to try Caribbean Latino food in this part of the US. Now to preface my review, would I compare it to the Cuban food I've had in Florida or New York? No, but given that we're not in a region with a strong Caribbean influence, finding something that fits the bill was exciting. Let's start with the pros: the customer service was excellent, the restaurant was clean, and it was nicely decorated, making good use of the space. I ordered Caldosa with white rice, yuca fries, and a malta. The Caldosa was bussin had all the flavors needed to satisfy the taste buds. The rice was cooked just right, and the yuca fries were on point. I definitely think it's worth exploring the different items on the menu. Now, for the Cons. While there were areas for improvement, they didn't affect my overall rating. The soup needed skimming big time, plus it was on the boarder of being a bit too oily in my opinion. At $11, I felt that the price point was fair for the market, but the dish lacked some substance. I got a tiny single corn ring, no potatoes or verduras (yuca, malanga, plantano, calabasa, etc), and small shreds of meat. If it had been a $6 cup of soup, it would have been okay, but for $11, which puts it in contention with other entrees, it needed a bit more. Perhaps maybe including a choice of rice, salad, or tostones on the side! Finally, I didn't like that my rice and yuca were packed in the same box. Since the fries were for someone else, so I had to dump all my rice into my soup to separate them. I would have preferred them packed separately. A few more fries would have been nice, too. Despite these improvements, the wonderful flavors still stood out, and I'm looking forward to trying more items...
Read moreSave your money and Avoid, Avoid and Avoid this restaurant. We went there last night for dinner around 8 pm the restaurant had about four tables full. That should’ve been a sign not to eat there. However I gave them the benefit of the doubt and ordered two orders of Cuban tour for $24.99 each. There was no description on the menu of that Cuban tour included, so I asked the waitress and she said meat rice salad but wasn’t clear. I said we will try it. It took her 45 minutes to bring the food out to us. To my surprise each plate had two cups of rice, one placed on the right and another on the left side of the plate. There was also one chicken leg, a bit of chopped tomato’s, a bit of chopped cabbage and one slice of pig meat very tiny and a tiny bit of shredded pig meat. Very expensive I thought but decided not to judge the book based on its heading and decided to start eating. Both rice cup servings were very salty. The pig sliced meat was so tiny and full of fat one bite was too little to stop the hunger. I kept a smile and hoped to find the last shredded pig meat would be better, mind you there wasn’t more than two bites, and sure enough they were too salty as well. I received the bill and paid it in cash$60 including tax and tips. The waitress has no manners at all from the beginning , throughout nor at the end. To say the least it was by far the worse food I have ever had and it sure wasn’t worth more than $8 a plate. Avoid Avoid and Avoid this Lola restaurant....
Read moreHere’s my honest opinion about this place. The environment is amazing our waitress Sofia I believe was her name was incredible. Super friendly and Cuban which she gives an authentic vibe to the restaurant. They will be having live music soon so that will add even more value to this restaurant.
Now about the food I will give them the benefit of the doubt being that they just opened. We ordered the pork, and the ropa vieja. The ropa vieja was not bad. I ordered it with white rice and black beans. The black beans were not good at all. Super watery and the liquid wasn’t even black. The pork was dry and the rice Congrí was bland we ordered tostones unfortunately they were nowhere the size of what one would find at a Cuban restaurant. They were very small and didn’t taste very well. Now in all fairness to this restaurant we are from Miami and in Miami one finds the best Cuban food in the country.
I really hope this restaurant improves on the quality of the food and make portion size a little bigger, because I want to make it my new favorite restaurant. I would recommend if the chef is not Cuban get a Cuban one. If the chef is Cuban I would suggest visiting places like Versalles, la carreta, and other great Cuban restaurant in Miami and bring those flavors to Lola’s. My hope is that you improve because I’ve been looking for a great Cuban restaurant in the DFW and you guys are...
