I've been to the restaurant a few times and have always had a great experience. I love the food so much that I convinced my boss to host our company's Christmas dinner(50 people) this past December in their private room upstairs and it was amazing!
This past Sunday, my daughter and I had afternoon tea at 3pm in their upstairs private room to celebrate mother's day. We were done around 4pm. Because we didn't have lunch before the afternoon tea we were still a bit hungry since the tea sandwiches and desserts were not filling (all was great just that portions were on the lighter side), so we decided to split a plate downstairs in the main restaurant.
The hostest was great, she sat us right away but we waited for 20 min for a server to acknowledge we were even there. The first server finally came and we told him we were ready to order and we told him we were splitting one chicken enchiladas. He then asked in a snarky tone, "is that all?". I get it, they get tipped off the amount of the check so for two people to be sharing a dish, usually means less tip for them. So I guess he decided he didn't want to serve us so another female server stopped by to drop off the chips and salsa and she asked again in an annoyed tone, "ok, so the last server said you all wanted to split a chicken enchilada, right? and that's it, you don't want anything else?" .. my daugher answered, "yes, we will be splitting". She didn't introduce herself, didn't even say she would be serving us from that point on. The food runner brought our food out and was super friendly. As we're eating, I see and over hear the female server complaining to other staff members b/c the hostest put us at that table as she was pointing at us. She saw me looking at her so she turned and kept talking but I couldn't hear more and honestly I didn't want to.
Being that it was mother's day, I was feeling extremely grateful to be able to spend time with my daughter and was also grateful for the staff to be working since many are probably mothers, have mothers or wives so I was already planning on tipping really well regardless of how much we consumed. Keep in mind, we spent $70 EACH upstairs for the afternoon tea plus tip. My bill downstairs was only $20ish but paid w/ two $50 bills. Even though both servers made us feel unwelcomed and I felt awful that this had to be my daughter's first experience at Paloma Suerte, I still tipped what I did because it was in my heart to do so. I hope that the servers that interracted with us that day learn to treat everyone the same, no matter how large their bill is going to be. I left feeling so dissapointed in the service and so unappreciated as a customer that I'm not sure I'll...
Read moreI normally don’t do these, but after the terrible experience my friends and I had I had to share. I had seen this restaurant hyped on social media and being “upscale” tex-mex and in the stockyards my friends and I were dying to try it. I tried walking in last weekend and it was reservation only, and looked on open table to make sure we could get in this weekend. I was able to make a reservation for 11pm and upon our 10:40 arrival, the host claims they close at 11pm and made it known that we were an inconvenience once he had to seat us knowing it was their mess up. “I guess open table still thinks we close at midnight” apparently there were 4 other reservations for 11pm… if you are advertising you “close late” and have your reservation system showing availability, then that is false advertising and it should be fixed immediately to avoid further confusion. I also suggest showing actual hours on your website instead of “to close” and “bar open late”. We get seated, clearly our server was annoyed she had a late table, we were rushed to order everything because “the kitchen closes at 11 and I need to hurry up and put everything in” at 11:01, we rushed to order : queso, carne asada, short rib birria tacos, and quesadillas. We ordered 2 frozen margs, one house and one watermelon. Both $12 dollars which is a bit much. The house marg wasn’t even drinkable, it tasted disgusting. We were barely waited on. The food comes out and my tacos had no flavor at all, my friend’s carne asada was completely raw. I understand wanting to rush in the kitchen so you can clean up and get out on time, but serving raw meat is just unacceptable. She couldn’t even cut it or chew it. The server claimed the chef said “carne asada is cooked medium rare”, but this looked like it was fresh off of the cow. Absolutely unacceptable. They re-cooked the meat that had already been sitting out for 20 mins at this point, and then gave my friend a steak knife so she could properly cut and eat her food, claiming “here’s a steak knife so you’ll have an easier time cutting your meat” … why wasn’t that given in the first place in place of the butter knife given??? Not to mention there were only a few pieces that actually appeared to be cooked enough. Honestly the best thing was the quesadilla which was an appetizer… which is really sad for a restaurant like this especially with what they’re charging people. $16 for 2 flavorless and greasy tacos? Are you kidding me? Do not even waste your time coming to this restaurant it is not worth the hype and it is really disappointing and hurtful being rushed and given poor service for THE RESTAURANT’S mistake. Save your money and...
Read moreStopped here at 10.30 on Saturday night as it was close to our hotel. I was a little unsure about eating here as it had potential to be a bit of a tourist trap and my suspicion was entirely correct. The space is large and we were sat quickly and ordered some drinks. I went with the Paloma and unfortunately this wasn’t a great choice (it just didn’t taste quite right but I am not sure why).
We ordered the BBQ Shrimp and Chicharrons to start and then ordered the duck and goat birria tacos. We waited quite a long time for our starters to arrive and when they did they brought all of our food together, including the tacos. We commented that we had wanted the tacos to follow and the waiter acknowledged that this should have been what happened and walked away. The chicharrons were good but this is where the positive food review ends. The BBQ shrimp was cold and the birria was oily/greasy and just generally very sloppy. The consommé itself tasted like it was made from a stock cube and lacked any flavour. There was no seasoning to the consommé and when I have had it in the past it has had herbs and pieces of meat in there, none of which this one had. We ate one taco each and left the rest. We spent about 15 minutes trying to get a waiter to tell them that there was a problem with the food. When we did eventually flag him down he said he would get his manager.
We did speak with the manager and when I explained the issues with the birria he told me that this is how it was supposed to be. I have had birria many times and we have never had anything this oily with such a complete lack of flavour. He continued to insist that this was how it should be, and that I was wrong, which was just a strange way to deal with a complaint on food. He offered us some churros on the house but I said we didn’t want any more food there and could we please just grab the check. They did kindly remove all of the food from our bill without us even asking/mentioning that, which we did appreciate and is why I give them 2 stars as opposed to 1. We wouldn’t visit here again and would recommend trying somewhere else if you are...
