Mercantile — Restaurant in Fredericksburg

Update from a month ago Unfortunately, just like so many other places, there is a lack of consistency when it comes to quality of food, specifically for phone, take out orders

I have ordered this item a couple of times and each time the quality of the food served was less than I expected. The last time the chorizo was greasy, some of the potatoes were cold/hard and shortly after eating this, it upset my stomach; probably the grease.

I was not going to return, but decided to try the vegetarian version. Instead of egg whites, the cook decided to do a fried egg. I was not in the mood for sending food back or having to wait for my order to be prepared correctly.

This is why I expect my order to be repeated back to me, of which it was, yet my order was still not prepared correctly. My egg whites are always scrambled and there was yellow in the egg indicating that there was yoke and not egg whites.😖

This lack of consistency eliminates my desire to patronize this establishment...at least for phone or take out orders. 😒

Only street parking available, but able to find parking directly across the street. Unfortunately, only steps and no ramp available to enter. 😒 Also, the door is very heavy and as soon as you push the door to come in, there is very little room to stand while wanting to be seated because not that big; the door is very heavy to pull to exit. 😖

Ordered the chorizo hash and dark cocoa biscuit. The chorizo hash was a pleasant suprise and a healthy serving size. Looking forward to ordering that dish again. Would definitely recommend.

Did not know what to expect for the biscuit. It was a bit dry, too thick and a little hard on the outside. It was edible, but I was not impressed...$4 for 1 biscuit is...

First time here and most likely will never come back. My boyfriend and I live in downtown, fxbg and have been to almost every restaurant downtown. I’m not sure of our waitresses name, but she was a middle aged black woman with braids. If we ever do come back here, we’ll respectfully ask to have someone else in the event she’s our server again. From the moment we sat down, we felt rushed. Once we got our food, she never ensured all was well. I understand being busy, but quickly checking on a table and asking if everything is okay is the least she could’ve done. I’m HUGE on customer service and this was a major let down. In addition to not checking on us whatsoever, after it appeared that we were done with our food, she just brought us our check — didn’t ask if we were done, if we wanted anything else, and still didn’t ask whether everything was good. I had to request a box without being asked if I wanted one (my shrimp and grits bowl was clearly half full), and the last time we saw her was when she brought the check. I could understand this type of service had we been rude people from the jump; however, we weren’t at all. I’m so disappointed. Nonetheless, we still tipped her 20% which was way more than she deserved. We would’ve been wrong if we hadn’t tipped her though….. If I were Mercantile, I’d be mortified to have her represent my business. I mean, honestly top 3 worst experiences we’ve had. I could go into more detail, but not...

Potential: amazing Execution: not so great :/ I’ve tried Mercantile a total of five times. The first time I got toast and sides, not bad. The second time I got a burger and it was AMAZING. SO delicious! But when I went back again and got their burger for my daughter to try... it was overcooked and had the texture of a hockey puck. I thought maybe it was just a bad day, and tried it again myself a few days later. Same result. Today, I finally gave it one last shot. I ordered a burger as it comes and brought it home. I’m sad to say it was again cooked to a puck - which is so sad because you can tell the ingredients are very high quality, the bacon is to die for. But there was almost no aioli (only on one small corner) and the patty was extremely thick and overdone. The saddest part is that ome of the owners (I believe Beth) was there and so I thought there would be some quality control - but sadly there wasn’t. I have to say Mercantile has the potential to be a 5/5 restaurant, it’s just so damn hit or miss (some days being AMAZING, others being way worse than a cheap iHop or BK burger) that I have to leave a one star because of how expensive it is and how many tries I’ve given it for only one of them...
