RED CHILIES- Halal-Mediterranean — Restaurant in Galveston

I don’t understand the good reviews which was what based my decision to try this place.

Placed my order for a chicken shawarma, medium fries, and chicken over rice. He said it would be ready in 15 mins. I got there in 15 minutes, and the chicken wasn’t even on the grill cooking yet. I waited an extra 10-15 minutes outside in the cold since this is a small trailer truck outside of a gas station.

The food looks NOTHING like any of the pictures by the way. Come to realize that most of the pictures are stock photos. The chicken shawarma was $10.99 WITHOUT any fries. Ordered a side of medium fries and the fries was wayyy larger than the shawarma. More than double the size. The shawarma itself was mostly veggies and barely any protein. I know that if I want fries, this was the place to go to because the portion was larger than expected for the price.

The chicken over rice dish was super deceiving based off of the pictures. Upon opening the container, there was so much white sauce on top that I couldn’t tell it was 98% rice and 2% protein. The ratio of chicken to rice was so off. Ate past all the sauce, and I kid you not, it was not even a small palm size of chicken. I realized it’s mostly rice. The orange/redness is the hot sauce that I added after. After a few bites, there was no protein left, and I’m left eating rice with veggies.

Nearly $33 for two dishes and one side for mostly rice and veggies? No thanks.

Love love love this gem of a Mediterranean food truck located in the Chevron parking lot at the intersection of Seawall and Broadway! I stopped by on a Thursday around lunch with 2 gal pals. I ordered the gyro over rice, and all of our orders took about 20 minutes to be ready. We sat at the 1 picnic table nearby and enjoyed the breeze as we enjoyed this amazing and affordable food, served in large portions. Would recommend this for anyone visiting Galveston, especially as it sits at the intersection of 2 main roads!

Per Google Maps, they open at 12pm, but they weren't open when we got there. We checked again at 12:15pm, which was somewhat annoying, but THE FOOD WAS SO WORTH IT! As a local I appreciate Red Chillies bringing some diversity to the Galveston food scene. This was my first experience with them and there were several issues that will make me reconsider going back. I ordered using Door Dash pickup. It took over an hour from when i ordered to get a confirmation that my dish was ready for pickup. When i arrived the meal wasn't even ready even though it took me over 15 minutes from time of confirmation to arrive. The cook told me it would be ready in 5 minutes and he did have it ready in that time. I saw the prices posted at the truck and was dissapointed that i overpaid by $2. The Door Dash prices were marked up even though i drove and picked up the order myself. Food was delicious although the portions were a bit on the small side.
