Went there with a friend today and we aren't sure that we would come back. Our waitress was friendly enough, but not very attentive. She just kind of slow-paced by our table and asked closed-ended questions expecting that "Yes, everything is ok" answer. But the staff wasn't the problem at all, it was the food.
We started with the loaded fries which was basically fries with bacon and cheese. It was a big plate of flavorless fries with a deep-brown and almost blackened burnt bacon and melted shredded cheddar on top, not mixed in. 80% of the fries under the very top didn't have any of the bacon or cheese. As I wrote above, the bacon was really burnt and the cheese was hard. I suppose that we were expecting the consistency of a queso.
We both ordered the soup and half-sandwich lunch special. Cream of crab and chicken salad. The cream of crab is pretty bad. There was a complete lacking of cream flavor. It was thick, translucent and "jiggly", so maybe cornstarch instead of a roux? There was a serious lack of flavor and seasoning. There is just zero imagination in this soup. I don't know, maybe try some sherry, onion, parsley or green onion? Tons of ways to make a great cream of crab! In the end it felt like old bay sprinkled over cornstarch-flavored Jello, with a little crab.
The biggest disappointment was the chicken salad sandwiches. You might be wondering, "How on Earth can you screw up chicken salad?" Well, here is your answer: You take a perfectly good chicken breast and put it into a blender with mayo. The chicken was decimated! If you can take your chicken salad from a plastic tub and spread onto a slice of bread with a knife, you did it wrong. Chicken salad deserves some crunch and texture! Dice up the chicken and celery into bite-sized pieces... Heck, even throw in some quartered red grapes and green onion? Bring it home with a heathy mix of mayo and Dijon! Again, just unimaginative and bland.
We live in Gettysburg. Consistently-good food here is tough to find! In Gettysburg, your "regulars" coupled with the tourists that just eat there 1 time can float your restaurant. Tourists tend to throw 5-star reviews at anything if they are having a good time.
Maybe O'Rorke's just has their typical clientele coupled with these tourists? I'm not sure. But what I am sure of is that our server knew what we had been served and knew that it wasn't great. Hence not actually stopping at our table to ask us open-ended questions about our food, but instead just...
Read moreCame to town on a Thursday 4, June and left the morning of 8 June. My friend and I are retired Marines. From day 1, we did some serious bar/eatery hoping. Each time we wound up at O'Rorke's!!!!! There are plenty of watering holes and places to eat in Gettysburg, God only knows we stepped into quite a few of them. We were treated like family from day 1. Our server's were polite, knowledgeable , and extremely good looking. The food was to die for, the owner Austin came out and conversed with us and made it a point to ask us when we were heading out. He asked us to stop by before we left. He did not let us down. We were once again treated like family. Coming out to say so long and chat with us once again. The one young lady Katie that we met from day 1, said her good buys to us and there was a feeling from my friend and I, that were saying good bye to one of our kids. If you are in the Gettysburg area, ya really need to stop in have a bite to eat and get something good and cold to drink. You won't be disappointed.
True to my word, I told them that I would return following our trip to see our son in Connecticut. Arrived shortly after the place opened on the 5th of July. The place was filling up fast. The food was crazy good!!! If you want to know how attentive the folks working here are, check this out. The night before we left Connecticut I called to see if Austin would be working Saturday? After explaining who I was to the young lady who took my call, she said " I know who you are, you were drinking Quietman" I was amazed. Yes folks, this place is a Family Eatery where they treat and remember you as Family. I bought another T-shirt and asked to take another photo with Katie and Austin. The next time you come to Gettysburg, make sure your first stop is O'Rorke's, you'll be telling your friends about this...
Read moreWas interested in this place since it is dog (& cat... more on that later) friendly but we ended up going without the pups on the way back from a Fall festival & I don't think it's worth a second attempt with the dogs. "Family eatery" is a bit of a misnomer. It IS family friendly but inside it is much more a spit-and-sawdust type of bar with a few scattered wood booths than anything else. Dark & a bit ruin down. Parking is also a challenge but they do have their own tiny lot. Outside seating is plentiful & pretty but the inside is dark & a little seedy. All that could be overlooked to have a fun place to take the dogs to dinner with us but the bigger issue was the food. It had no taste. None. We started with a crab dip pretzel. I had a patty melt for dinner & my guy had a cheeseburger. Nothing had any seasoning. The burgers were utterly tasteless. Puny toppings as well. The fries were very pale, tiny, & unseasoned. The best thing were the apple fritters we both got as a side (an odd option of a side but neither of us wanted the coleslaw that was the other choice). Really wanted to love the place but it was very disappointing. There were 2 dogs on the large back patio & 1 on the front porch/patio, which made me miss my pup, but the best part of the early evening meal were the 2 beautiful black cats white toes who were wheeled to a table near us in pet strollers. It turns out they were sisters celebrating their birthday with a chicken dinner & then ice cream with their "pawrents". They were adorable, well-behaved, & entertaining but let's be honest, it's unlikely you'll get a chance to see kitties in strollers eating dinner when you'd go so in my opinion it's best to find another pub or brew house with better food & a little more comfortable indoor seating environment than...
