UPDATE May 2025: Yay for now selling the Barrio Bakery/Chompie's bagels! It's not easy to get Barrio Bread out our way, so am delighted they and Chompie's teamed up on a few varieties of bagels. Focaccia style was loaded with rosemary and smelled so good upon opening the bag (see pics). Toasting really brought out the flavor. The dough itself is unique, so read about it on Barrio's site. They are c. $2+ each and sold in a 1/2 doz. bag, pricey but a really tasty treat and you are helping two great local companies and more: flour from Hayden Mills, BKW Farms--other items are also sourced locally and benefit groups such as San Xavier Cooperative Farm/Tohono O'odham Nation. *Prior review 2024: A little trip to the Big Apple! As a former NYer, I loved the decor with its pics of the subway, taxis, etc., and it's nice to have indoor/outdoor seating options. Music was kept low enough to be able to carry on a conversation:yay! Why not throw a typical NY song into the mix--a Broadway tune or NY themed piece would be fun to loop in periodically. Superior service with smiling server Ryan: friendly and attentive. If he wasn't sure about a question, he immediately found out. I kept him busy with the all you can eat fish ($21.99) on fish/they start you with 3(crispy bar-fried potato wedges and slaw good too).I often have to peel away overly thick or partially soggy batter, but this was light and adhered well. Nothing was over salted. They should lose the plastic containers for the tartar sauce: use washables or paper foldout ones for better dipping and environmental concerns, and when eating in-house why not just put a dollop on the plate and save any separate container? Same for plastic straws: go paper and only when requested. The pea soup was tasty too and appropriately sized for a side with the meal, but if that's their regular sized bowl if ordering a la carte, it's too small for the price. The Coney style knish was way overpriced at 6.99, and its crust didn't have the outer crispness and the part near the potato filling was soggy. The filling didn't have that dash of pepper I was used to.There was no need to add a side of flavorless gravy, so don't know why they include that--certainly nothing I'd ever seen or needed with a NY knish. The chopped liver wasn't what I was used to either as it was sweeter, I could not detect chopped hard boiled eggs, sautéed onions, or the schmaltzy richness that chicken fat would provide. For health reasons I'm sorta glad they omit the latter, but the appearance would've benefited from some white and yellow egg flecking. The presentation was nice with red onions and bagel chips. I was glad they used full size bagel chips as I'm sure a place like Chompie's has plenty of bagels to make them fresh, but that's also a reason that they should be outstanding, not so hard that you could break a tooth. They should perfect them and make it clear that they are freshly made bagel chips that are baked with some olive oil and a hint of salt and people would rave about them. These had to be dropped into soup or doused with salad dressing and were not appropriate for chopped liver. And what, no slice of a kosher pickle?! Disappointed this location does not have any beer on tap nor does it have the favorite drink to accompany a deli meal: Dr. Brown's Cel-ray soda. Pretty good baked goods section with treats like black and white iced cookies. The 3.99 cookie I got was a sugar cookie with a shortbread richness and chocolate sprinkles and dollop of chocolate icing in the center. It was the best cookie I've had since moving to AZ, but truly, the price should be knocked down a bit. Overall, a nice relaxing meal that makes me want to return again. However, because of the prices I can't be a regular, so hope they have some coupons or other incentives since in the spirit of NY, people should be incentivized to come and should be able to say upon leaving,...
Read more2/16/23 I've upgraded my review from a 1 to a 3. The below review still stands true. I won't eat in the restaurant anymore because the company that took over really decreased the quality of the food. But the personnel are amazing! I'd like to recognize Jackie and Tammy in the bakery. Jackie and Tammy , make my mornings so nice! I always come to buy a cookie, but I always get great smiles, and a great conversation as an added benefit. Please recognize them for their outstanding service. Thank you.
Previous review. I want to start by saying this is not a reflection of the staff. They are the best! This is only a reflection of terrible corporate decisions, designed to increase profit, while decreasing costumer satisfaction and employee confidence. Chompie's used to make everything from scratch. They had the best dressings. They had the best waffles. And, my favorite, along with many others, were the pancakes. Well, yesterday I treated myself to a pancake breakfast. The very first bite I took, reminded me of eating a sponge with syrup on it. That is not the cook's fault. That is not the server's fault. That is the complete fault of the corporate ownership. I was instantly disappointed. They have opted to use a new recipe for their pancakes, obviously in an attempt to save money, and increase profit. I will not be ordering pancakes again. I have already told several people that Chompie's has clearly chosen to reduce expenses, and increase profits, at the expense of quality food. As I sat there trying to endure the terrible taste of that pancake, I looked around the restaurant, and saw that there was only one other table with customers. This place used to be packed from wall to wall, 7 days a week, no matter what time of day I went there. It is obvious that these terrible corporate decisions, have led to a loss of loyal customers, customer satisfaction, and that includes me. I will be going to Wildflower for my pancakes now. It's bad enough that, as customers, we are going to lose a restaurant we used to enjoy eating at. But what is worse, is that the employees that rely on tips, patronage, and loyal customers, are going to lose those tips, patronage, and loyal customers. The financial security, and job security, of these fantastic employees, are being compromised by the poor decisions of the...
Read moreMy 1st ever visit to Chompie's was less than spectacular. Let me preface my statement by saying in the past I have managed several different styles of restaurants including Fine Dining and National Chains. My server at Chompie's Glendale, Nicole W. seemed somewhat disinterested in waiting on a solo visitor to her place of employment. Not uncommon, single person, low check average, less tip, who cares right? Greet was relatively prompt and choice of drink was offered while I perused the menu. Iced Tea was my choice but was never offered the option of lemon and when delivered, there was no lemon in sight. I had heard that the Hot Pastrami sandwich was something to behold so.......I ordered the Hot Pastrami sandwich. I noticed on the menu that Potato Salad was included with the sandwiches and was surprised that Nicole offered me FF. I figured since it was a New York Deli that Potato Salad would be a "Signature Item". I asked about the Potato Salad and in particular if it was Homemade, she responded "Yes, it's very good" and "Yes, it's Homemade. It wasn't and it's not. When my "Hot Pastrami" sandwich came, it wasn't really Hot, actually kinda warm and since it was 110 degrees outside in Arizona, that's not very difficult. Sandwich itself had ample amounts of Pastrami but for $15.99 you would assume that it would. The disappointment was in the flavor of the Pastrami, I had been told that you would not even need to apply any condiments to this buttery Dagwood of a sandwich but I again was disappointed. Very bland and not anything like I expected and EVEN CAME WITHOUT PICKLE!!! What Deli serves a Hot Pastrami sandwich without a pickle and who serves Iced Tea without at least OFFERING a lemon? Potato Salad was served in a small plastic cup and was anything but Homemade so all in all, very underwhelming and for $20+ dollars for a sandwich and one glass of lemonless Iced Tea (no refill was ever offered), I think I'll have bologna on rye and open my own jar of...
