My wife and I went here after strolling through Americana and when we first walked in we had good expectations. We were welcomed in by a gentleman, lets call him, Greeter. Very polite and welcoming.
My wife and I grab our seat with our baby in a high chair and sit down. Totally normal experience so far. A waiter comes and takes our drink order where we both get hot water. Shortly after, Greeter comes by and asks if he can get us any drinks and we tell him we already placed our drink order, but ready to order food. He responds with something like "I'm not your waiter, but since it's not busy, I can take your order". It was kind of weird, so my wife and I both asked if he was sure bc we didn't want to mess anything up and he assured us and took our order.
Our go to order at any sushi restaurant is Omakase. We were surprised it was only $40, but only 7 pieces of nigiri. But we thought it's always good to try the Chef's choice, so my wife ordered that for herself. I ordered the Otsukuri which is 14 pieces of sashimi for only $80. As appetizers we also order a crispy rice and an agedashi tofu.
After we placed our order, our hot waters arrived. My wife noticed bits floating around in her cup, but decided not to make a stink bc she wanted to order a beer anyway. So we just let it go.
The omakase and appetizers came out and since my wife eats slowly, she began eating and we also started on the appetizers. Before long, I noticed that my wife was almost done with her meal and I still hadnt received mine. Greeter comes by to check on us and I ask about my Otsukuri and he states he'll go check.
We see Greeter going to the sushi bar discussing with some staff and then goes off to tend to other tables. Greeter goes from the back to near our table, passes by us and goes to tend to another table. At this point I feel like he's avoiding us now.
I finally get Greeter's attention again and ask what the status is. He states there was a "technical glitch" where the order didn't get to the back, so he is "expediting" the order now. He gives a half hearted apology and goes off.
It's a bit frustrating, but we move on.
A waiter brings the Otsukuri and I eat the sashimi. Perhaps my emotions are getting the better of my taste buds now, but overall i felt the sashimi was mediocre, not terrible but just "fine". Greeter comes by after a while asking how it is and I tell him it's fine.
Rather than moving on, Greeter proceed to try to "up sell" me on other sushi on the menu. Stating that I should order off the "sushi style" menu bc the omakase is just plain. My first thought is "Omakase is supposed to be the chef's choice, an experience of sushi that defines the chef's culinary expertise". OK maybe not those exact words, but something along those lines.
It just felt slimy that Greeter thought it was a good idea to up sell me on more sushi after he forgot to put in my original order. I mean had "technical glitches" on my order.
Perhaps I'm nit picking on this experience, but the experience left me feeling hungry and disappointed in the service.
TLDR: Floaty bits in water cup Order comes out way late (after Wife finishes eating) Waiter (but not really a waiter) up sells on menu Do...
Read moreI had an extremely disappointing experience at Seabutter Glendale on Valentine’s Day. I made a reservation for 8:45 PM, confirmed it the day before, and arrived on time. After checking in, the hostess told me they would call me when my table was ready.
At 9:30 PM, I asked for an estimated wait time, and she reassured me it would be less than 5 minutes. However, I watched as guests with 9:00 PM reservations were seated before us, then even guests with 9:30 PM reservations (later than mine) were also seated before us.
I asked the hostess why others were being seated before me. She looked confused, took my name again, and had no explanation. She asked me to wait just a few more minutes. Another 5+ minutes passed, and once again, I saw another party get seated while we continued waiting with no update.
At that point, we had lost trust in the process and decided to leave. Instead of enjoying a special dinner, we ended up at Shake Shack next door—our last resort on Valentine’s Day.
I’m extremely dissatisfied with how this was handled. I made a reservation for a reason and expected a smooth experience, not to be ignored and forgotten. This was unprofessional and unacceptable. I hope Seabutter addresses their reservation system and improves communication with guests in the future. I received an email asking me how my experience was, I left a comment, but nobody...
Read moreFirst time here, we chose Seabutter randomly while at Americana at Brand shopping area. It was an anniversary dinner for my brother and sister-in-law.
The restaurant recently opened in Glendale and the space they are in is on the smaller side, but light and airy.
They call their food modern sushi and they do have some unique items on the menu.
We shared an order of the garlic edamame and ordered a rainbow roll (made with blue crab vs dungeness), daddy long legs (soft shell crab), the hottie (low carb) and pressed toro (think a layered roll cut into rectangles). The Wasabi served seemed to be freshly ground based on texture, but I didn't confirm that.
The food was tasty, although my brother said he prefers dungeness in his rainbow rolls. I throughly enjoyed the items I tasted, including the rainbow. Everything was super fresh.
Only three minor things keep this from 5 stars, our main waiter seemed a bit aloof and distracted, but that could have been due to how many tables he was managing. The support team was attentive and friendly. The cute, but super messy soy sauce pot (I understand they are replacing them) and lastly, there was no acknowledgement of the special day we were celebrating, even though I mentioned it when we were seated.
Overall I would go back and recommend the...
