The Broken Yolk in San Diego is a famous spot for its Man vs Food appearance and serving up a good breakfast in the beach area. As the chain expanded, I’ve had numerous solid breakfasts at their Carlsbad location, which is close to the magnificent La Costa resort, a favorite. So when the chain was announced for sleepy Glendora and that it would be right around the corner from our own magnificent Flappy Jack’s, I had hoped two things would happen. It would take the heat off Flappy’s so I could go more often and I would welcome the option to also enjoy a quality breakfast at the Yolk once and a while. What a disappointment.
This Broken Yolk seems to be from some sad place where you can attach a quality brand onto a Denny’s. Set aside the inauthentic and ugly decor, the grumpy wait staff and you still have some truly awful food.
We went for brunch, sampling the Monte Cristo and the Chicken and Waffles. Both are well-known breakfast meals that can really give a restaurant the opportunity to get creative and shine. Both were comically bad.
The Monte Cristo came with rough-looking french toast, small bits of ham and turkey and cheese that wasn’t entirely melted. My wife ate half and was done. The chicken and waffles were worse. A flavorless, small set of waffles served a bit hard and accompanied by three chicken tenders that looks like they were out of a Walmart frozen chicken bag. Revolting. I took them home to my dogs since they aren’t going to mind so low quality garbage.
I can only hope the home office of Broken Yolk will address the subpar food and experience at the Glendora Broken Yolk. We have too many good choices in town and didn’t need another lousy...
Read moreWe went New Year's day after 1pm hoping it would be quiet. They were very very busy. I had called ahead, which they will accept 30 mins before a seating. Typical wait that day was 45 mins. With a short wait, we were seated. The staff was very busy, but still had a cheerful disposition. Water came fast but that was all that came quickly. They were way understaffed in the kitchen and after we ordered had a 45 min wait for food. Our waitress tried to keep us updated and we did receive a significant discount because of the long wait. Something's are to be expected on holidays and a long wait for busy restaurants are to be expected. Having said that we both enjoyed the Mom omelette. I suggest the red sauce over the pico. The omelette was properly cooked and tasted great. The fresh southern style biscuit was a treat. The gravy had a very heavy onion flavor. This was not my favorite, but it could be a unusual batch of gravy. I have eaten hash browns in breakfast places from So Cal to Atlanta to Montreal to Seattle. These were some of the best hash browns I have ever had. That is saying a lot if you look at my reviews. We look forward to coming back during a normal breakfast day and try some of the sweeter options. Update. My wife and I have been back to the broken yolk several times and the food has been quite good. It is now the end of March 2022 and the kitchen seems to be running better. Our waitress today was very good and had a great personality. There is still room for improvement so...
Read moreThis spot just opened up and I had to try it. Been here twice since they opened and both times have been great. Food is delicious and service is great! They have coffee and mini blueberry muffins available while you wait. The wait can be long if you go on a Sunday or holiday. Worth the wait though!
I've tried the following items: Border Benedict - Delicous! The sweet corn bread is different. I really liked this, but my girlfriend was not a fan of it.pictured El Fuego - I love chorizo, so this was great. The gf and I both loved this dish. This is in my order rotation for this place.pictured Chicken Fried Steak - This was a solid dish and I love the thick gravy that they use. Delicious and is in my order rotation. The Mom Omelet - The gf really loved this dish, and is in her order rotation. Plain Pancakes - they were solid no complaints on these. I gotta try the flavored ones next time. French Toast - I prefer the pancakes, but these were not bad either. Messy Caramel Latte (iced) - I would suggest adding an extra shot. I like to drink coffee and to me it didnt have enough coffee taste. My gf who doesnt like to drink coffee often really likes this drink (it's sweet)pictured Mocha Latte (hot) - this drink was good it's like a hot chocolate with shots of espresso.
I havent ordered anything I didnt like from this place. Would recommend this place to anyone looking for a good breakfast spot in...
