I recently tried to stop in for a drink before closing at 2pm. I arrived before 2, with enough time to finish my drink and leave promptly, I was rudely turned away by the hostess with a green streak in her hair, who claimed they were closed even though it was still before 2. She dismissed me, even as I saw two workers actively mixing drinks behind the bar. When I politely asked if the fall menu drinks were available at the after-hours cocktail bar, she affirmed but rudely repeated that they were closed again. Having worked in the restaurant industry for years, I know that if a customer arrives while closed, they should at least be treated with respect. As for the dining experience, my last two visits were disappointing. I ordered a burger that was drowned in queso/green chili and after just two bites, it became a messy and unenjoyable dish. During another visit, I ordered the Monte Cristo, which was overwhelmed with jelly, and after a long wait, the bread was soggy by the time it reached our table. Once again, it was not enjoyable. The food here is below mid. On the same occasion, my partner ordered the apple pie mimosa. It arrived in a small glass with a pumpkin spice rim and a drop of flavor, but all we could taste was apple juice. At $12, it was far too expensive for what amounted to a tiny glass of mostly juice, especially considering that a full bottle could be bought for $11 at a liquor store. My friend ordered a matcha drink and asked the server to put a shot of vodka in it. When it arrived, she could not taste the vodka but was still charged for it. The server muttered something about the drink before walking away quickly to help the next table. The service at Out of the Blue is not good to say the least. On my last visit, there was only one server closing out the restaurant, and she was clearly overwhelmed, managing at least five tables while trying to take care of ours as well. We arrived and (who I am assuming was) the owner was too busy putting away a delivery to help customers, and the waitress was running around frantically serving the other guests. We waited for quite a while to be acknowledged or sat, and we only had a party of 3, but the people who came in maybe 15 minutes after us were sat right away. I would suggest having at least two servers and hostesses closing on a Friday night to avoid these long wait times and reduce the stress on staff. It is unfair to the guests and the staff to leave them short handed when everyone knows it is going to be busy on Fridays. My experiences at the after-hours cocktail bar have generally been quite good. I want to recognize Bethany as an excellent bartender—she is always polite, attentive, and as quick as possible. I truly appreciate her service whenever she is behind the bar. While the drinks are a bit overpriced, the atmosphere makes it a worthwhile spot if you're comfortable spending around $30 for two drinks,...
Read moreAbsolutely fantastic new brunch spot for Greeley. My wife and I had the avocado toast and the Pacific salmon Benedict, and both were amazing.
This is the newest offering from the people behind Greeley's best coffeehouse, The Blue Mug. The menu is full of modern brunch options, including smashed avocado on sourdough toast, and vegan chorizo. The pancakes are all available in a gluten-free form, and many kudos to the proprietors for that. But there are also dishes that promise a glorious new experience to the curious, like "Tiramisu French Toast," which must be the greatest collection of three words on any menu (unless you can count turducken, which you can't).
The food is outstanding. My Pacific Salmon Benedict was served on thick-sliced sourdough, and the flavors melded perfectly. Their salmon is a star of the menu, also occurring among the omelettes and sandwiches, so try it one way or another. The Benny came with roasted potatoes, just crispy enough on the outside, and herb-seasoned.
My wife was delighted by her avocado toast, which was topped with blistered cherry tomatoes and (I think) some sprouts. She loved it as much as I loved my dish. Both were reasonably priced.
As if this weren't enough, the staff told us that the whole Blue Mug menu is also available. My friend, the Blue Mug makes great espresso drinks, but my opinion is that they have the best drip coffee you will ever find. And here, I drank 3 mugs of it with my brunch. This is true bliss.
But the best thing of all is the proprietors. The owner really and truly cares about his patrons and his employees. I believe that this is the key to his success. If there is any justice in the world of restaurants, Out of the Blue will be filled to overflowing very soon, and for a long time to come. I encourage you to try it while you can still...
Read moreJust came back from brunch at Out of the Blue; my daughter had visited several months ago and said it was very good so we decided to try it. When we came in we noticed something about a senior menu, but didn’t get a chance to ask as the waitress seated us almost immediately (which was nice), but when I sat down the sun was full-on in my eyes, so we moved a couple of seats over, which she said was fine. Although we are (clearly) seniors we were not offered the senior menu so had to ask. The items on the senior menu were only about a dollar less than the regular menu and had a limited offering, so we both ended up ordering the Weld County Classic…….three eggs, choice of bread and meat, with their house potatoes. The eggs were just as ordered…..very good; we both ordered bacon (got 2 strips) and it was so crisp that it actually broke when I set a piece back on my plate. My husband had sourdough toast (one slice) and I had a misshapen English muffin. The breads were not buttered but they gave a cold pat of butter to the customer to put on if they wished…it was way too hard to spread. The jam was put into a small metal cup, but was maybe a tablespoon in the bottom. The potatoes had some large chunks in them with most of the rest just being mushy………..or burned pieces…..with no flavor.
My meal was served on a chipped plate.
The waitress was friendly and attentive, but the food definitely needs improvement. Hopefully the owner/manager reads this and makes some serious changes. If I served my family this quality of food they would think I had lost my touch in the kitchen. We briefly considered Village Inn this morning, but decided to give this place a try. Two breakfasts, no...
