As someone who used to live about 15 minutes from Tarpon Springs (FL), I can certainly attest to what authentic family-cooked Greek food really is. Although I’m not Greek myself, I have friends and coworkers who are and everyone would always bicker about which restaurant in Tarpon Springs tasted most like their mom’s or grandma’s. Since moving from FL, it has been seemingly impossible to find the true Greek flavor until today when my search for Greek cuisine landed me at Acropolis. I would have rated this restaurant with 5 stars had it not been for the welcome, or lack of one. We were told from someone at the back of the restaurant, “she will be with you in a minute.” About 30 seconds later, a woman walked up, grabbed two menus and proceeded to walk into the dining room and literally threw the menus on the table. We weren’t even asked to follow her but did just out of habit. She continued walking beyond the table and turned around and pointed and said “you can sit there.” Based on the sign at the entrance that said they do not accept parties greater than 4 people due to staff shortages, I was a bit leery of what was to come. And after the welcome by the woman who also ended up being the waitress, I was super inclined to leave and go elsewhere, even though there were only two other tables seated. We were very happy to have stayed because the food was absolutely delicious and very true to authentic Greek cuisine. The portions were generous and fairly priced. If the service had been much more welcoming and pleasant, I would give this restaurant an A+ rating. I would certainly consider returning especially since I have so many family members who also love truly authentic Greek food however I would not hesitate to walk out if we were greeted in the same...
Read moreWe had a very disappointing dinner experience at The Acropolis Restaurant on a Friday evening between 6 and 7 o’clock. The disappointment was surprising, considering all the wondrous reviews that have been posted.
As a Greek-American, I’m familiar with Greek food and too, I’ve lived and worked in Greece for several years.
I’ll preface my “critique” of The Acropolis by noting that parking for the restaurant is a challenge ... there is no designated area for patrons.
We ordered Dolmathes (stuffed grape leaves) for an appetizer. They seemed to have been commercially canned or jarred ... the rice filling was mushy ... certainly not appetizing.
The Avgholemono (soup) was dilute and bland.
Bread was not offered, but served when requested. It was sliced white sandwich bread of supermarket variety.
The Greek salad was not remarkable.
The Gyros entree seemed like two slabs of a mystery meat placed on a bed of soggy, soupy rice pilaf. A sad boiled potato was on the plate, a tiny thimble of tzatziki sauce, as well as a clump of green beans in a tomato wash. And yet, the few broccoli pieces were OK. The Moussaka was uneventful, but not tasteful in the traditional sense.
Service was good ... given there was but only one other couple seated in the dining room at the time.
Perhaps other dishes would be more tasteful, but we don’t...
Read moreI have been looking for a good Greek restaurant in Greensboro that compares with my favorite over in Winston Salem. This was the closest so far but due to road construction is a bit difficult to access at the moment. Also because of the reduction in business because of said road construction, they were missing a few menu items. We had the large Assorted Grecian Sampler Platter, the Avgholemono Soup and the Mediterranean style salmon. My heart was set on the taramasalata but sadly it had fallen victim to the construction situation. I will definitely go back another time to have that! The tzatziki was delicious but the portion for the 'large' platter was a bit meager. The spanakopita and the tiropita were also very good as were the keftethes. I'm a harsh critic when it comes to the avgholemono soup and this was almost perfect. It was homemade and served piping hot. It could have used just a smidge more lemon but was not bad at all. I highly recommend Acropolis if you like Greek food but call ahead to make sure your faves are available until the roadwork is done. The waitress said they'd been told late June to early July for completion. You can park around the corner on Battleground and walk around the block - not easy to get to...
