Castaways Ice Cream--Moiliili — Restaurant in Honolulu

I’ve been pretty excited about this place opening since it seemed to be in the works for at least a year. Didn’t live up to expectations however.

To start, the vibe inside is cute and service is decent. The temperature control for the ice cream seems poor. It looks like they just have a trough of ice that the ice cream pails rest on with no cooling from the top, so the pails that are more than half full are melting on the top while those that are less than half full are rock hard (the employee had difficulty scooping these). The flavors are also unimpressive. Between samples and trying the flavors that my group chose, I tried the chocolate, cheesecake, vanilla bean, and grilled pineapple flavors. Nothing stood out and I’d rather get grocery store ice cream to be honest. Prices are high for the portion size, especially since they don’t pack the ice cream into the cup as other places do. There was a lot of space between the scoop of ice cream and the walls of the cup.

I’ll give them another chance in a few months once they’ve had time to work out the kinks…but they have a lot of competition with Niu being in the next building over.

UPDATE: gave them another try and there have been some improvements. The ice cream bowls get filled up more now. Service is still good. Flavors are still just ok. Price still feels kind of high for what you get. Temperature control still seems poor, but now the workers scrape off and dump the melted tops of the ice cream pails before scooping them...

My new favorite late night ice cream shop! I’ve been telling all my friends and family to stop by and they finally did! I’ve been here about 4 times and fell in love with the white chocolate flavor. I saw that they posted on their instagram that they switch flavors daily/weekly, which is awesome but was scared my favorite flavor was going to be gone. I messaged them on instagram to inquire—because my birthday was coming up and I wanted to stop by. And whoever running their instagram was the kindest! They told me they would make sure to make a batch and have it for me on my birthday weekend!! I’ve been telling everyone about it so the week of my birthday my sister in law went and I went twice on my birthday week. Oh and their milkshakes are phenomenal, they have this cool contraption that makes it the perfect texture, I highly recommend that! Overall, 10/10 for me, inside is beautiful with vibrant colors, staff is friendly and social media account managers are super helpful as well! First time trying Castaways and I’m so glad I stopped by! My cousins and I went on a Tuesday night at about 7:30pm and it wasn’t too busy.

They had lots of different types of flavors and some that caught our eyes were the pandan coconut, almond joy, hot mango, and grilled pineapple, Very unique flavors!! We ended up getting peanut butter, coffee, and cookies and cream, They were very creamy and delicious! They had lots of tables to sit from and it was nice and cool since it’s been so hot and humid outside.

The employees are so nice and allowed us to try all types of different samples. The owner Robert was there to greet us and check up to see how we were liking the ice cream, he was so nice and sweet! I can’t wait to come back again and try the almond joy ice cream cause they were out of it when we came, and even try the cereal...
