The park on the Kapiolani side of the Ala Wai is huge. There are many things to do and see. Starting from the corner of McCully & Kapiolani there is a Canoe Club & a small playground. In the same parking lot you can find public restrooms. Not the cleanest but you can find restrooms further down which are just a little cleaner, not by much but still better. As far as the homeless that people have mention it's not as bad as other reviewers have made it out to seem. Easily ignored. Keeping along side where a jogging /walking trail begins. The trail begins right next to the Ala Wai canal next to the first baseball field & bleachers followed by a soccor field. In the evenings you may see a dog training class take place (which night I do not know). Once you past both and cross a bridge you will come to a small area of balance beams & excercise bars for pull ups. This is along side another baseball field. Keeping on the trail there is another area of conoes, a larger playground, basketball court and a parking lot. This lot serves not just for the park but is also for the preschool that is connected. Continuing on there is an area of small lots that can be rented out that is between the Ala Wai & the preschool. Each fenced in area had someone get growing some kind of vegetation. Some have vegetables while others are just orchids or other flowering plants. This is my favorite part of the walking trail. There are also benches along this part of the trail to sit and look across to Waikiki or the conoers paddling up and down the Ala Wai training for competitions. At last coming to the end of the trail you come up to a small dog park. Throughout the day you can see dogs of many different breeds coming togetherplaying and having fun. The last parking area at the end of the trail will lead you to the center of Date St. Where believe it or not is the beginning, or end, of another jogging /walking trail that ribs along golf course. That, of course, is for...
Read moreAs I have said before, I like this park. The dogs and their parents are very happy here. However, today was a different story. A lady came with her dog and they were under the trees. Her dog was a puppy and running around the field, when a female Iolani coach came with a paper in her hand and admonished the lady. She was told she had to leash her dog and leave, as Iolani School had the permit for the use of the park. The lady coach even showed the dog's owner the paper saying they had use of the park from xx hours. Wow! With all the money Iolani has, they don't have their own soccer or softball field? The coach could have also been more cordial in explaining it to the lady. There is a large community that brings their dogs to play in the park.
In addendum, this is the softball field behind the dog park. Dogs like running there because of the abundance of space. Dogs will usually stay with their owners under the...
Read moreI have been part of the community around the Ala Wai Canal. Even at 1 time we would jump into the water's of the Ala Wai for it was ok🤙! I took dance lessons right there in the community center and pottery classes and this center was the 1st to have a Pottery kiln around late 50's or 60's. Now my granddaughter plays there since 5 months old till now at 6 yrs. old. The Papa has been the one who's been there to help with the lifting and to coordinate her feet. This park held so much families that played basketball, football, soccer, volleyball, paddling, and the best ballroom dance lessons right here. I went home with a few ribbons. There's a deep history of this very place, like people growing food and fishing for tilapia so many years ago. Aloha from Nui St across...
