By the taste of it, Golden Eagle has a new owner or a new chef or both! I've been going to Golden Eagle off and on for well over 30 years and maybe even since they opened. Being Chinese, I judged Chinese restaurant pretty much solely by the quality of their food, and Golden Eagle has gone up and down as its changed ownership over the years. It started out good, then after some time when down, then up again a few years ago, and now, in 2025, it's up up 📈.
Last week, I stopped by for traditional vegetarian e-mein to celebrate my mom on her 101st birthday, and it was the BEST e-mein I've had in Honolulu for a long time. The noodles were al dente, not broken, and cooked dry style with a delicate seasoning that brought out the flavors of the dish. Many local Cantonese restaurant drown their dishes in thick oyster sauce. Not Golden Eagle.
Given the surprisingly deliciousness of the e-main, I went back last night to test my theory. That theory is looking less like conjecture and more like fact. I bought fried rice with salted fish and diced chicken (咸鱼鸡粒炒饭 haam4 jyu4-2 gai1 lap1 caau2 faan6) - again for my mom because it's her favorite, and it was perfect. Not too oily, tinged rice grains that easily separated, and they didn't skip on the salted fish. I also picked up their Hong Kong style chow mein, and I imagine it's exactly what you'd get in Hong Kong alongside your dim sum.
So bit thumbs up! I definitely will go back to try other dishes like their scallion noodles, hot shoyu ginger chicken and dry style beef chow fun (so hard to get a good one!). And maybe I'll pick up a combination plate: Beef Broccoli, Sweet Sour Sparerib Ginger Chicken, Crispy Gau Gee Fried Rice. Can't go wrong with these!
(I only do take-out at Golden Eagle, which is always fast. Definitely don't go there for the...
Read moreFor what looks like a typical Americanized Cantonese greasy chopstick restaurant from the outside, it is far from it. There menu is vast with the basics and unique offerings. What drew me in for this visit, was I heard they started offering Laska. Laska is a personal favorite of mine and love hitting up what few places offer it.
If you have never heard of it, Laksa is a spicy noodle soup popular in the Peranakan cuisine of Southeast Asia. Laksa consists of thick wheat noodles or rice vermicelli with chicken, prawn or fish, served in spicy soup based on either rich and spicy curry coconut milk or on sour asam. The soup base tends to be more liquidly and not to thick despite the added coconut milk. All the goodies that are added into it based on your likings make for fun hunting while enjoying this heart warming bowl of complex flavors that all work well together in the end.
Seafood Laksa is my favorite and usual go to, but they also offer beef and chicken for those wanting something different. The serving is large, so it will satisfy the most hungry person. It is meant to be spicy, but they can control the level for you. However, if you really need and extra kick, they have their own homemade chili sauce that is the bomb and a perfect ignitor to launch your Laksa to the moon. Well, hopefully just to your stomach.
The place is clean and service very friendly with how attentive and accommodating they are. The one drawback is the parking. Timing could be an issue, so best to plan ahead and dine early or late off the...
Read moreWe have been customers of this restaurant before and repeatedly enjoyed their food. This time, it was Christmas Day and we called several hours ahead to order our food. They gave us a specific time to pick up your food and we went about our day. When I went in to pick up the food they told me it would be another 5 minutes. Five minutes later, they told me another 5 minutes. That went on for 1/2 an hour. When I was finally able to pay and get our food we took it home to have our Christmas Day dinner in front of a holiday movie. Unfortunately, from the soup to the last dish, all of the flavors were off. The hot and sour soup was so sour that it caused the two of us to actually gag, making our throats for. The egg foo young was tough and dark and very oddly flavored. Nothing like we have ever tasted from there before. The cake noodle was loose and also off flavored. The minute chicken felt like a side dish in a takeout meal. The one success was the pork hash. Ironically, that dish was the one that caused everything else to be backed up by a half an hour. Here I am a week later and I am still experiencing waves of disappointment. Such a bad experience, I'm not sure whether we'll...
