Yama's, is a family run business, that is an absolute must try, at least once, if you live in Hawaii or are a visitor. Foodies, search out places like this, when you're trying to find a local/Hawaiian food experience outside of home cooked. The prices can be expensive, but the quality is worth the cost, and the variety is really great, to get the kind of food, that is becoming harder and harder to find on a regular basis here. In other words.... traditional food for local people on the fly. The deserts are also so good, that you will literally watch the money fly out of your wallet, and think it's the greatest thing you've ever seen. The shelves stock some harder to find goodies, sauces, and snacks, that only local people can really appreciate. The poke fish is fantastic but pricey, but that's OK. I've seen people cry in the store, as it brings them back to childhood memories, of food and times gone by. Anyway... whatever... we love it, and we go there regularly. My goal is always to keep my wife from going nuts, and spending more...

Im ex-milit. Turned what is now my 30th year as Kamaaina. I've learned to pick fav songs on my Kamaka Ukulele, snorkel & surf, and paddled outrigger, naturally Hawaiian food grown on me and became one of many local "homie" comfort food... for this 6'3 Asian boi grew up in Iowa 🤙
Throughout COVID and our 2 shutdowns, everyone's cautious and rightly followed the Stay at Home Orders. Many local eateries closed down, and sadly, too many forever.
I luv to cook; even more so, to eat 😝. Naturally that includes eating out. I had forgotten how good the food, such as at Yama's, are in Hawaii!
I forgot my glasses in car, couldn't see thr menu on the far wall, so I simply told the cashier - I'll take whatever's listed as plate #1... and I savored that Laulau like there's no more COVID...

PUPU: Smoked Sliced Tako I absolutely love tako, but also am picky about how it's prepared. This version had a good texture - tender yet still chewy, but the flavor was just one-dimensional, liquid smoke. It severely overpowered the tako's natural flavors. Pass!
Pipikaula Thank goodness a container of this accompanied the disappointing tako, upping the rating two full stars! To be honest, I've never eaten pipikaula but have only heard of it. What it is, I'm pretty sure, is marinated/salted and dried beef. It looks raw but is actually fully cooked, sliced semi-thick and super tender. The texture is like fresh corned beef, the flavor like beef jerky. Absolutely delish and will go great with beer and wine (yes, my wine virginity has been defeated, lol)!
OVERALL: Great, another stop when...
