Visiting relatives, driving thru Houston. Had heard that there were several Luby's Cafeterias in the Houston area, so we looked them up & decided it would be a good place to have a non-traditional Thanksgiving dinner. And it was! I grew up eating at Luby's with my family in Dallas. There was formerly one in Fsrmington. NM, 50 miles from our home in Durango, but the pandemic closed it down. So it's been a really long time since I had the pleasure of eating good cafeteria food in a nice atmosphere. At 12:30pm, there was a long line, but only a short wait until we were choosing our dishes. There were 7 meat or fish choices, turkey dinners with all the trimmings, lots of good vegetables, including comfort foods such as Mac 'n Cheese, good rolls, and cornbread. The only thing that was not seen was a large selection of deserts. Two TG favorites were featured: pecan and pumpkin pie. We had only the day before purched a 12" diam pecan pie, so we chose to split a slice of pumpkin pie, not my favorite, but it was our only nod toward a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. I realize that cafeteria food is not considered good food by some (many?), but we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. While ingering over desert with coffee, we planned Friday's travels along back country roads closest to the Gulf Coast, along barrier islands to Galveston, crossing by ferry to the Port Arthur peninsula. Then we have to travel some on I10 into Louisiana before cutting south thru Homa to again follow the less-traveled back country roads to and along the Gulf Coast. We can go as far east as the NE tip of Grande Isle, then must back track to N.O. to turn south toward the Southern-most point in Louisiana reachable by public road. It's way more fun than traveling Interstate Highway system, because you travel more slowly, more easily, don't feel like you have to "make time," and will likely see and experience things you otherwise would not. That's what traveling is all about.
Back to Luby's Cafeteria: good food, good service both thru the line and while at the table, clean bright atmosphere, reasonable pricing, certainly for a greater selection of foods with larger servings than are generally served elsewhere. If you haven't been to a cafeteria in a while, try it out. If you've never considered cafeteria food, try it out. You may find the trip...
Read moreluby's used to be years ago a very nice restaurant with good food. the only reason we have eaten at the luby's on old spanish trail is because of the convenience of being next door to the hotel we stay at when we are down to houston for my husband's cancer at MDA. i wrote a feedback to luby's corp A MONTH AGO & bryan dowell with luby's answered it saying that luby's would send me a guest pass for a free meal. 1 month later i have never received it. i made 3 or 4 calls to luby's to ask about it but still never got it. the people who answered the phone seemed disconnected from the dept that does this & altho they told me they would look into it nothing ever came of it. at least not at this review. as for the food there it is hit & miss. most of the food is fried, the fish is dry & tough, some of the vegetables are not cooked through, the cashiers don't always ring things up right or count change back correctly so you need to check, etc. i can remember over a year ago or so eating at this luby's & actually getting a good entree like sliced pork roast, roast beef, turkey, pork chop, etc. but the last time i ate there nothing like this was there. maybe its best that luby's does shut down because if they no longer want to provide good food & good customer service to people who have always been loyal customers than what's left? i just want people to know out there how bad their guest relations people are at their corporation that they don't act on what they say they will do for you. i hope that luby's mgmt will read this.
THIS IS AN UPDATE: LUBY"S DID FINALLY SEND ME A GUEST PASS GIFT CARD. IT WAS FOR $20. it did take a month to get it tho (they say 7 to 10 days) & i had to make several follow up phone calls to luby's in order to get it as promised. normally when i eat there with my husband without even getting drinks costs us over $20. so it won't cover a full meal but better...
Read moreHad the worst experience at this location today. Samantha and K. Jones, in Luby's To-Go area, had the WORST attitudes ever today. Luby's you really need to reconsider having these two individuals working your frontline serving your customers. Samantha seemed to be frustrated that she was the only person working the To-Go area todaÿ K. Jones had just pissed the customer off ahead of us. The male gentleman was expressing his disapproval about his interaction, with K. Jones, to Samantha. Her body language, attitude, and customer service was awful. My lunch date and I told her we wanted two chicken and rice soups. She submitted the order for one. She stepped away, before we could correct her, to take another order. When she returned to the register we simply stated we needed two soups to go. Apparently, that frustrated her she reached across and cancelled the transaction on the credit card reader. She spoke into her headset advising she needed two soups. She stepped away again. By this time K. Jones walked up, asked if we had been helped. We advised him yes. My lunch date asked K. Jones for a cup of water. K. Jones made no effort to get him the cup of water. I went to get the water for my date instead. Before leaving, I asked K. Jones if he could please refill my water cup. He gave me a look like "B" are you serious?! Another young lady saw the interaction and kindly took my cup and replenished my water. I wish I had gotten her name. That's how you treat your customers! Because of this experience I may never return to this location. Will probably take my business back to the Meyerland location where I feel like I'm valued...
