Lovers of Greek and Mediterranean food often seek out small, local restaurants. These establishments often do offer some of the very best food, but there are some noteworthy chain restaurants for Greek fare and one of the good ones is Niko Niko’s Greek and American Café.
This Niko Niko’s location is right at the intersection of I-10 and the Sam Houston beltway, west of downtown, so it’s easy to find. The inside features a large square room with a good number of tables and booths for seating, with a few televisions for sports viewing. Because it’s an open room, it can get noisy so don’t come here on the weekends if you’re expecting a place for peace and quiet. The restaurant features café style dining, which means you walk in, get in line, order your food, and then wait for it to be prepared. You walk to the counter to pick it up.
I like the food items at Niko Niko’s. They are quite tasty, even if a little pricy for what you get. I usually order one of the sandwiches, like the Buffalo Chicken Pita, Spinach Chicken Pita, or the cheesesteak. All are well- prepared and good tasting, with a fair amount of seasoning to keep things interesting. There are other choices, including some more American style foods, like burgers. They have larger platters for heartier appetites. The sandwiches come with a choice of sides and I recommend the oven baked potatoes. The only other choices are rice or fries. More options would be nice, but the oven baked potatoes are so tasty you may be willing to forgive the lack of choices.
This Niko Niko’s Greek and American Café location does have outdoor seating, which is great for those times of year when the weather is nice. However, don’t use it if you’re expecting a great view. The concrete of the freeways and buildings surround the restaurant, so outdoor dining should only be selected if you simply want some fresh air. Otherwise, I recommend staying inside.
Mediterranean food is not the type of food I can eat every day or even every week. But I do like it from time to time and Niko Niko’s Greek and American Café does well in satisfying my cravings. It may not rate as the absolute greatest Greek restaurant in the Houston area, but for a chain restaurant, it is easily better than average with food options the entire...
Read moreI have been to this location before and never have I experienced service like this. The fork fiasco was pretty bad! My party of 5 had to literally use 4-6 forks EACH to finish our meal! The cheap flimsy forks kept breaking all over the place!! That utensil vendor needs to be replaced STAT!
The cashier can't hear very well or he doesn't pay attention to orders. I told him I wanted a chicken kabob PLATE (my usual) and he asks "you want the chicken kabob sandwich or meal?" I said "I want the plate with rice and potatoes" he rings me up a chicken kabob sandwich with rice and potatoes added as extra for $5. When I went to the counter to pick up my meal I overheard the guy handing out orders that the guy's oyster sandwich was an oysters and shrimp sandwich which was a mistake the cook made and he asked him if he wanted that or to wait for just an oysters sandwich. Naturally the customer said he would take it! Mine came out and it wasn't what I had ordered, but checking my receipt at the counter it was what I paid for so I took it.
My coworker ordered the chicken breast topped with like 3 different kinds of cheeses and he told the cashier that he couldn't eat the carbs so the cashier says "oh we can substitute that for something else" so my coworker said "ok let me have the veggies instead" and the cashier charged him the regular price of the meal that now did NOT have carbs and then upcharged him $5 for the veggies that he was told would be substituted for the carbs. He was never told the substitution cost extra ontop of the SAME priced plate with less items! The food is good, but the bad service outweighed the good food that...
Read moreMy family and I have gone to Niko Nikos several years now.
The food and service in the past has been great. But yesterday we have hit the breaking point. Occasionally a restaurant is going to put out a dish which the customer is not satisfied with. I get that and understand that restaurants can’t be perfect. Yesterday we ordered a chicken salad, two burgers for the kids and a gyro. The gyro was great. No problems there. Both of my kids complained of “crunchy things” in their burgers. So my wife and checked and I don’t know if it was beef bone or what.. but there was something a bit hard and white in both burgers. I have eaten at other burger joints repeatedly and never gotten bone bits in my burger. I think they really need to upgrade the quality of beef they are getting for the prices they are charging.
Second on the chicken Greek salad, the chopped up chicken had the skin still on it!!!! People ordering a salad don’t want the skin first and foremost. That is the fattiest part of the chicken and the whole reason people usually order a salad is to eat “light/healthy”. So it makes no sense to keep the skin on for a salad. (I understand if one orders a chicken by itself they may want the skin on and that is their choice. But again, a salad is supposed to be a healthy choice. But it can’t be healthy if the skin in included with the chicken).
The gyros are great. The chicken soup is great (especially if you are sick!). But if you are looking to eat healthy, you have to avoid the chicken because the skin is all chopped up in it (thus making it one of the worst choices for...
