Bright, clean and fresh, Poke in the Bowl is a typical small poke cafe in a strip mall. Easy to see from the street and with free parking. Wheelchair accessibility is on either end of the strip, and parking allows the cars tp pull up with the front end on the sidewalk. Clueless shop owners put boards out to advertise making it hard to maneuver a wheelchair past between the car and board. This isn't Poke in the Bowl's fault but be prepared to manage it.
So the negatives first... their drinks are pricey, with no soda fountain. No refills. No alcohol. But you can have free lemon and cucumber essence water. Their desserts are also pricey, and they are pre packaged Japanese frozen desserts. They're okay, but they aren't very fresh, with ice built up on the food.
Another negative is the seating. There are only two tables suitable for wheelchair use. Thr rest are tall tables with stool seating so during busy times, it might be hard to find a seat in the tiny restaurant.
Now the good stuff: compared to other poke restaurants in the area, their prices are comparable. They offer shrimp and scallops for their meat scoops, which most places don't offer, and they have chicken for those who aren't into raw fish (don't worry, it's cooked). Their veggie selection is smaller than most though, but there's a good selection. I like their fried garlic and fried onion crunchy toppers and their sauces are flavorful with a good selection. They have wasabi mayo, sweet Chile, ponzu, and lots of others.
The staff was friendly and service is fast. The fish is decent, but compared to Seaside Poke, the fish cuts are small and not very flavorful. The yellowtail should be sweet, the spicy tuna should be spicy (and it really wasn't), and thr salmon should be smooth like butter with a slight smokey flavor. The color of ther fish is dull too with the yellowtail being more grey than white and the salmon being a muted orange instead of a bright salmony color. It wasn't bad, not at all, but ive had better.
We'd go back. Service was okay. Food was decent. Prices are reasonable. Dining room accessibility is good (bathrooms are not). Overall a...
Read moreI have found my favorite poke place thus far. I'll get my complaints out of the way first, because there are so few. I wasn't a big fan of the atmosphere, because the mostly grey walls just made the place feel a little too clinical (maybe add some plants?). And I also wasn't the biggest fan of the method they serve the poke. It's very organized in a big to-go container, but it's hard to mix it up, which is my preferred way of eating poke. That's all the negative things I have to say though! The staff was super friendly! They explained their different menu items, let us sample their most popular fish, and let us try the different sauces before we had to pick. I am in love with the spicy house shoyu. I have not had a sauce that works better for me. It's savory and spicy, but not so much to overpower the flavors of the fish. Their menu is expansive, and you get a lot included in the price, like seaweed salad and crab meat, which just isn't the case at other places. The servings of fish were large, and the overall portion of food was more than enough to fill me (I got the 3 scoop or large, which is what I get everywhere). I have no doubts about coming here again, and...
Read moreMy first time hearing of this restaurant from my teenage son. He suggested this place to me one day when we were looking somewhere to get something to eat. Once we got there, I felt a bit overwhelmed at first with the food options because i was skeptical if I would like it. I would like to acknowledge the man who worked behind the counter that helped me put my poke bowl together. He was patient by asking me what I liked, telling me what each items are and the flavor that each gives. He also mentioned the popular items. This place is excellent in my opinion for first time goers who want the experience of trying something new. My poke bowl was so good! that I had to tell my son about it. He said to me, "I know" with confidence. Lol. I do plan to try this restaurant again but they don't have a location close to where I live. The location that we went to is near the Heights,...
