This place deserves a 3.5. The food was good but some dishes fell through.
Service from the beginning and end was slow and rude. My waitress though was very sweet and helpful. Once I walked in, I told the hostess that I had a reservation. Instead of bringing menus or walking me to the table she pointed and she said to sit there. No smile, no "hello", no service basically. I could've seated myself if that was the case. I had to ask servers for menus. Once my actual server arrived, she recommended dishes and she was very kind and diligent. At the end, she disappeared from her other tables and another server took our check with my card. After 10-15 min. I was finally able to get my original waitress and she processed our card. Yes, that means the server who took my card didn't return back and was hanging around the bar area drinking his drink. How considerate... Timing was important because parking is limited and I was in the garage. Anyways, the food; I ordered the following:
Shumai Xiao long bao Green beans Truffle beef fried rice Lotus leaf wrap with rice and mushrooms Panfried dumplings Spicy wontons Fried shrimp balls Noodle wrapped with crispy bread and shrimp
Shumai was good, a little on the rubbery side. Flavor was like any other shumai.
Xiao long baos aka soup dumplings were very flavorful. I liked the amount of soup inside and they weren't piping hot.
Green beans were very salty and they were the only fresh component to our meal. So that was disappointing. If it wasnt overly salty these wouldve been great because the flavors were delicious.
Truffle beef fried rice was dry and flavorless. Something they need to improve on. Bland and filling and pricey.
The rice wrapped in lotus leaf is okay, I do wish it were more moist and had more flavor. Like the one in China Town. I liked the presentation, but needed more sauce or filling.
Panfried dumplings were okay. Chive overload but I like that. There was barely any filling though.
The spicy wontons needed more spice. I did wish the wrappers were softer and less chewy.
Fried shrimp balls were good but I would prefer the sauce to be on the side. The bottom of my balls were sweating and soggy and no body likes that.
Shrimp and fried bread wrapped in noodles was my favorite. That had great flavor. Still crispy and they were cut into bite sizes.
I am sad to say that they don't provide soy sauce or chillies at your table, your server needs to bring that for you and you need to ask. They don't have sauce bowls for each person so the sauce is everywhere on your plate and it mixes with all your other entrees. I ordered another entree but it never came out and I wasn't informed it was out. I came for the duck pumpkin dumplings but they sold out and it was 6pm.
It was okay overall, but this place will definitely do well for it's location. If I were around the area, I'd try it out again, but Chinatown dim sum will always...
Read moreLet me preface my review with the fact that I know it's not at all the servers' fault for what I said in this review. I blame this all on management for not taking the necessary precautions to prevent such bad service from occurring.
I came here with a group of 6 people for lunch. We had no problems with the food whatsoever. The food was great and the dim sum was interesting. However, the service was probably the worst I've ever had in recent memory. I attribute the bad service due to the fact the restaurant was clearly understaffed. There were two waiters running the whole place during the busy lunch hours. This is not good for customers. Our water was never refilled. We never received silverware when requested. The AC seemed like it was off (we were sweating inside the restaurant—it was hot).
The food took forever to arrive. One portion of our order came very quickly and the rest came like 20-25 minutes later. By the time the rest of the food came, the single person who received their food had eaten already (they weren't going to let the food go cold and wait for the rest of the dishes). Overall, it was an awkward and slow dining experience. Additionally, one of the dishes that we received was incorrect and so the staff said they apologized and said they would take it off the bill. However, when we received the check, the item was still on the bill. Lastly, once the waiter took our order. They never came back to see us other than to give us our food. We had to go to them to ask for silverware, talk about the incorrect dish, etc. Very infuriating.
When we asked the staff what was up with the long wait times and disordered service, they said they had received some huge online order that was throwing their kitchen off. I understand that, but what do you expect dine-in patrons to do? Management should have redundancies in place to prevent such a back-up. Management messed up big time, and we and the staff felt the consequences of their mistake.
Now, I don't think this happens often at all, given the mostly positive reviews for this restaurant. But, if it happened to us, it can...
Read moreWell well well… Taste of Mulan got a facelift, a new chef team, and apparently a passport, because the flavors now travel all across Asia and Europe — and I am so here for it.
Honestly, I was expecting the usual “same name, different napkins” kind of change. Nope. This place said ✨REINVENTION✨ and meant it.
🌟 The Stars of the Show:
Black Truffle Seafood Spaghetti Let’s just say: if I could marry a pasta, this would be the one. It’s giving “truffle meets ocean breeze with a silky Italian accent.” Perfectly cooked noodles, a generous load of seafood, and enough truffle aroma to make you want to inhale the plate. And I almost did.
Maple Tofu with Italian Noodles OK hear me out: tofu in pasta? Shouldn’t work. Totally does. It’s sweet, savory, and somehow tastes like a late-night jazz song. Mulan’s version of East-meets-West fusion is chaotic in theory but absolutely delicious in practice.
Crispy Fish Fillet Crispy on the outside, buttery soft on the inside, and seasoned with actual flavor (a concept lost on many places these days). Even the leftovers were elite — I didn’t even reheat and still devoured it like a savage.
🫖 For the Bougie Touch:
Their blooming floral tea? ICONIC. It opens like a scene from a kung fu film in slow motion. You sip it and suddenly you’re relaxed, hydrated, and probably a better person.
🥩 A5 Wagyu? Yes, Please.
It arrives sizzling and looking way better than I do on most days. Buttery, rich, and basically melts into your soul. Not cheap, but neither is heartbreak — and at least this brings joy
Their new dim sum collection is finally here too.
This new Mulan isn’t playing around. The menu is thoughtful, stylish, and full of pleasant surprises (unlike most dates in Houston). I’ll definitely be back to try the A5 fried rice and whatever else their chef...
