Under the Volcano — Restaurant in Houston

Love the atmosphere. It’s dark, full bar, plenty of seating. The only food I had was a couple different tacos on Tuesday; 1/2 off for taco Tuesday. The smoked salmon had a big flavor, the Buenos Aires tacos were good, but should have a bit more of their aioli, that is a good aioli! Make sure to ask for salsa or it will not come with the tacos. The verde is good, not quite hot enough for verde (the hotter of the sauces for tacos is normally verde; this was good just not hot). Beautiful place for a good time and a little trendy but not in a bad way. I would easily make it a regular place if I lived near Rice Village. Not overly expensive, but definitely on par for the area. No table service (except for receiving the food), which makes it lovable as a neighborhood bar. Old black and white movies on the tvs, and very cool easy listening music overhead that doesn’t overpower conversations. Awesome staff, friendly and helpful. They have a discount food option for every night. It’s a good option to avoid the overdone rice village trend setters yet could be a great place to bring friends. Outside seats with smoking. This place never ever disappoints. I often forget about UTV because it's off my bar path, but once it pops back into my mind, I just can't get it out of my head (insert Kylie minogue - style crooning). The atmosphere is just perfect. It's perfectly lit with great pirate/lost on a deserted island decor. they have a light tapas style menu with a few tasty treats that always please my tongue. But, most importantly, they have fantastic drinks. I think they're famous for their frozen screwdriver which is exactly what it sounds like. I personally fell in love with this place one terrible Saturday morning when all I needed was a Bloody Mary. This one was basically a buffet. They're in no way cheap, but you get this skewer full of pickled veggies and a chunk of sausage. Holy moly! Wowza!

So, I come back...over and over again (think Tim McGraw and Nelly). I'm now a giant fan of their whiskey smash, the mojito and some hot cocoa drink that I can't name. The wine selection is always top notch and beer choices are always creative. I really love this place and am soooo willing to spend $10 on...

No matter how good your drink taste or how well your steak smells, if your service isn't there, then what's the point of being in the service industry? The last time I was there, it took them almost half a hour to get one drink out and the server told me that somehow someone else took my drink and they never made another one until I remind him that I never got my mixed drink. Luckily, after that incident, things were a bit better but this service (or the lack of) has always been at this location. To have the best service, simply just order at the bar because server staff definitely needs improvement on checking on his or her customer.

Although the decor and the atmosphere for the bar is unique and dimly lit for a more moody feel, but all of these can not make up for the shortage of good service. I am hoping that the management will finally do something about this before I will ever...
