So fun, glad we stumbled onto this place. After a walk on the Coronado beach, we decided to head south to IB. We checked out the menu on Google, as soon as I saw ossobuco taco I was sold. Parking in the lot by the restaurant was 2 bucks, score! It's a cash lot only FYI, and the lot was pretty dead despite the beach and boardwalk being full of people on a Friday evening. The restaurant is mostly outdoors, and they have upper patio seating to take in the view, the restaurant is super close to the shore. The entire staff was friendly, smiling, and so attentive. My husband tried a Japanese beer and he loved it, I got the Pina colada slushy, which was pretty good. But the tacos were out of this world, the ossobuco did not disappoint, so tender, so flavorful, and I think most of their tacos have that fried cheese in them. I also ordered a fish taco which was really crisp and fresh, but my husband's fried shrimp taco was unexpected. The shrimp was wrapped taquito-style then fried before added to the taco and dressed, crazy. Carne asada was tender and so well marinated, i could have eaten a plate of just that. We also had the sharable quesadilla which I highly recommend, the asadero cheese was fried and caramelized before it was put into the tortilla, which was also lightly grilled, it was mouthwatering! Two tacos each, a sharable quesadilla, and two drinks was like 55 bucks. I will be back, can't wait to try the...
Read moreCity Tacos is located inside of Mike Hess. I made like 3 laps around the building before figuring it out.
Tacos are pretty good. I wouldn't consider them traditional tacos which was surprising being this far south, but that's not a bad thing as they have some very interesting options (capers in a taco?! Cool!).
The tacos are slightly larger than a standard street taco. The pollo asado was the best that I tried, well seasoned, moist, tender. Surf and turf taco was quite good as well, with generous portions of steak and shrimp.
Carnitas were well prepared, but lacking a bit in the flavor department. Easily rectified by adding some red/green salsa. Costilla de res en salsa verde was very drippy and soupy, but the flavor was definitely there especially with the addition of whole mushrooms.
I was disappointed with the carne asada. The meat was colorless and grey. Suffice to say it looked better than it tasted. Very little flavor, crumbly, and the little bit that was there was entirely overpowered by a disproportionately massive amount of pinto beans.
Overall, a pretty good experience, very good environment. If you decide to eat here I would recommend trying some of the more foody/exotic options as I think that is likely where their...
Read moreThe tacos at Mike Hess/City Tacos are excellent and unique. Being this close to Tijuana it takes some amount of fortitude to open a taco restaurant let alone create something that stands out from the pack. The Pollo City taco is one of my favorites; it's complimented with golden raisins and fresh arugula which is fantastic. But the show stealer is the Heuvos Breakfast Taco which includes a perfectly cooked fried egg on a delicious foundation of heavenly taco-ness. The servers are all mostly friendly but can be hit or miss; it's never bad service persay, just the current attitude of providing a minimum service experience that's seen throughout the industry. One point of constructive feedback though: They rarely bother to answer the phone (in Imperial Beach) though I've tried many times, and the wait to order in person can be long. Perhaps they are understaffed but I've never seen a business that regularly doesn't answer their phone. Overall an excellent culinary experience everytime I go, which is often since I live two blocks from them and I often wake up dreaming about that breakfast taco. Also try the Mike Hess original Hop Cloud beer. It's quite hoppy and delicious with the color of a beautiful South...
