So, I will start with the positive: Their truffle fries are outstanding, and I truly appreciate them offering vegan cheese. I so wanted this to be our regular place, but the WAG curse strikes again. Like WAG itself, there are many good ideas at play, but the execution is off. The first time we went, we had a decent experience - not great but good enough to warrant a second visit. We just went this past Friday night, and we are officially done. We each ordered a personal pie only to be told they had run out of that size. This is extremely weird to me as this would literally just mean taking a certain amount of dough you already have, no? Is no one working capable of measuring out dough besides whoever prepped earlier in the day? We should have just left then as our options were to order larger pies for no discount, but we foolishly stayed because we were very hungry. Our pies came, and my husband ate half of his - not because it was good but because, again, he was starving. His was greasy and very limp in the middle, so he could not even hold it like a normal slice of pizza because it would collapse. I ate less than a third of mine, and we took none of the rest home because, frankly, the pizza is not good enough to want to reheat. Our appetizer also came out the same time as our pizzas. Then, we were pretty much ignored. Both times I have gone, I got the sense takeout and catering is their actual focus, and the restaurant itself is an afterthought. We eventually flagged down help, so we could pay our bill in cash and leave because we did not have faith we would see anyone in a timely manner to have our credit card run after receiving our check. Our server did not even take the bottle cap off my water. I had to use the bottle opener my husband carries. I would so love to support a business in my community, but just like we eventually gave up on WAG, we have now given up on this place because the same management problems seem to have followed. I now know not to even bother with the Highland. I have...
Read moreHis place is super clean, staff was very nice, food was ready quickly. And the third point there is the reason for the 4 star review. I ordered tonight, online through Toast, and was sent an email that the expected pickup time would be 60 minutes.
Here is where I have a problem. I received a call 30 minutes later that my order was ready. I only live 3 blocks away so I walked over to pick up my order. When I got there I was given my food quickly and the staff I interacted with were very friendly. When it was handed to me I could tell this food had been sitting for at least 20 minutes. It was luke warm at best. So, when I got home, the cheesesteak and pizza (which cost $40) needed to be heated up. Now, when I pay 14 for a cheesesteak, ideally, I do not want to have to microwave it when I get home. The pizza is less of an issue, because pizza is pretty easy to refresh in the oven.
The problem here is that you should not be setting your expected pickup time in Toast at 60 minutes, when the order will actually be ready in 15. When I got there my cheesesteak was just sitting on the counter in a bag while the pizza as in the back, but was also clearly not being held in a warming box or on top of the oven as is typical for a pizza place.
As I see it there are a few ways to solve this problem. 1. Make sure that management is actively monitoring how long orders are taking and adjusting the online order wait time accordingly. 2. If you set the order time for 60 minutes in Toast, then have the kitchen time the order so that it is ready at the expected pickup time. 3. Get a warming box or heat lamp for the orders to sit in while they are awaiting pickup.
Anyways, I will definitely order from The Pizza Wheel again, as the ingredients are great and the food was obviously made with care, even if the execution needs a...
Read moreMy wife and I dined there today and had an amazing dinning experience. Would give them 6 stars if I could. Pizza Wheel is warm and welcoming. Parking in rear with a courtyard & outside seating. The food and the service are the stars of the show. Everything is made from scratch! The pizza dough is crispy, and brick oven style (imperfections by design and well done pizza bubbles). The gravy screams homemade. One of the best homemade caesar dressings I have had in years, not the creamy bottled stuff everyone serves. Even the crotons are house made- large and perfectly seasoned. The pasta dish with the spicy calabrian vodka sauce was insanely delicious (Would seriously dress a Pittsburg filet with it.) The Italian sandwiches are next level, have to travel miles for anything like them. Had the chicken cutlet with rabe, roasted peppers, fresh mozzarella, dressed with house made garlic aioli. All of their sauces are bosses- made in house. Quality ingredients, this family cares about what they plate. Our waitresses (they all assist with service) are customer friendly & clearly are trained on making their guests feel right at home. Pizza Wheel serves Richmond small batch ice cream (salted caramel- yeah baby!), hard to find. Excited to eat our way around the menu. Thanks to owners for adding a much needed eat to restaurant...
