If you ever find yourself wandering the gray corridors of Jersey City hunger in your gut and a craving for something real—something transportive—then you might just stumble into Ella Greek Kitchen. And if you’re lucky, you’ll order the pork gyros.
Now, I’ve eaten gyros in truck stops outside of Thessaloniki. I’ve had spit-roasted pork from island shacks in Santorini, with tzatziki dripping down my wrist, dust in the air, and the Aegean sparkling like a bastard in the background. Ella? Somehow, they’ve bottled that memory, wrapped it in warm pita, and handed it to you with a side of nostalgia.
The pork is tender, deeply seasoned, crisped at the edges like it’s kissed by volcanic rock. The tzatziki is cold and assertive, the kind that slaps you across the face and says, “Yeah, you’re in Greece now, asshole.” It’s not overly dressed, not too clever. Just right. No gimmicks, no apologies.
This is the kind of place you bring your friends when you want to shut them up about “authenticity.” It’s not trying to reinvent anything—it’s reminding you of what good food is supposed to do: punch you in the mouth with memory, soul, and a little fat.
Ella Greek Kitchen doesn’t need your praise. But it...
Read moreThis new Jersey City eatery has cute decor with both indoor and outdoor seeting. It is a bit pricey, but that is to be expected with it being centrally located on Newark ave.
The food was good, not great, but definetly not bad.
I shared the beef and lamb platter with my gf and there was a good amount of pita, french fries and veggies but we both concluded that the meat was a little on the skimpish side. The veggies were nice and fresh and french fries hot. A good dish, but not amazing and I would say not worth the $20 they are charging.
The zucchini chips were more oily than id like but the feta was scrumptious. It is a good appetizer, but definetly not worth $10 IMO.
My favorite part of the meal was the Spanakopita. Very authentic, tasty and fresh.
Overall a decent spot, and I’m glad we have a greek spot in JC now. However a bit overpriced in my opinion.
(The cardboard box style “plates” that the food is served in inside the restaurant is also turn off for me. Makes it more of a task to eat the food than i feel...
Read moreEla’s is EXCELLENT. The quality of their food is so high, it is delicious, it feels healthy and delicious at the same time, they are so generous with portions. The salads are so fresh, the rice is fluffy, and personally as a vegan I love the vegan yeero. Everything about this restaurant is well done. Super speedy, the service is very accommodating, like I didn’t know if I should add the gigante beans to my bowl so the register person just gave me a sample, which of course got me to order them. The gigante beans are SO GOOD. To me the bowl is really the best but sometimes I feel like a pure salad. The pita bread is so good, everything is good. It’s beautifully decorated and very clean. 10/10 I love this restaurant, it’s honestly some of my favorite food in Jersey City. Kudos to the staff...
