New Jersey Brunch Roundup ☕️

New Jersey Brunch Roundup ☕️

There's a couple of items available for just about everyone - there were a small number of items that were or could be made vegan and gluten-free, which I appreciated. Not really anything on the breakfast or brunch menu, sadly, but at least there were the rice/noodle bowls that could be made both vegan and gluten-free. I got the sesame tofu salad bowl and it was delicious. (I'm pretty sure it was listed as gluten-free when I was there, but it doesn't seem to be anymore?) It was a decent serving of tofu and made for a nice light brunch. If I'd been hungrier, I'd have also gotten some bubble tea - maybe next time. I will say that it took a while to order - the seating area isn't even really that big but they seemed to not have enough staff to take orders from people dining in and people getting take-out at the same time. Probably didn't help that we were there at near peak brunch time on a Sunday. Non-vegan boyfriend and his brother got pancakes and avocado toast and eggs that they were extremely happy with. They ended up ordering take-out online (while seated at the dine-in tables) and eating it there because it was complicated trying to get their orders taken in person.

Stopped in on a Saturday for a quick lunch at around 1:30. There’s limited seating inside but at least there were a few more tables outside and it was still warm enough to sit out there. I would describe Short Grain as a weird Asian fusion that has been super-Americanized. I had the banh mi, but I don’t think I’d really call it that. Really, the only thing banh mi about it was the pickled veggies and the cilantro (which they put way too much of. It was almost like a cilantro sandwich). The bread was pretty good though, so I have to give them that. My fiancé had the pork adobo bowl with brown rice. The pork was way too dry for my taste. Maybe their non-Fietnamese (fake Vietnamese) items would be better? I’m not sure, but I don’t think I’ll be back to find out.

Used to come here a lot since it’s in the same block where I live and always ordered the cauliflower bowl it’s a healthy vegetarian choice rich and healthy loved to eat it after a good workout. Never coming back here again. From the moment I entered wasn’t even greeted nicely the man in the register was paying more attention to his phone, all tables dirty and only one person sitting inside so he wasn’t even busy. I said hello to him and he didn’t even say hello just said what do you want to order. After waiting 15 minutes for my food which is fine it came out cold. Waited another 20 minutes for them to warm it up and saw everyone coming in ordering and getting their food before mine. While eating other people in the restaurant finished their food and leaving the man didn’t even come to clean the tables. After finally getting my food and eating it I left without anyone there saying have a nice day or anything. Looked like nobody cared about the place which is a big disappointment because you can have good food but if you have employees that don’t care about your place you’ll loose many costumers. This is downtown jersey city and theirs alot of options to eat around with great warm service and employees that care. Don’t let such a good place get ruined. Just give it a...

Place has gone downhill. Been coming here sporadically for years, and I’ve noticed the amount of food they give you and the service has gone down. I went in to grab what I thought was going to be a quick sandwich. Asked for it to-go and said I’d wait outside. Worker said cool. 30 mins later, no sandwich to be found, I walk back in (workers relaxing/chatting) asking about an update on where my sandwich is. Guy is like “pork belly? It’s right there.” (Sitting on the counter) — to which I said “I told you I was waiting outside.” His reply “Oh, I’m sorry. I looked outside, but didn’t see you.” — If he had cared to actually look outside, he would have seen me sitting out there waiting cause I never left. Maybe I should have gotten up to check on it earlier. Either way, this isn’t the first time I’ve experienced unsatisfactory service from this place (not to mention their dirty outside tables that could use some sweeping and cleaning) and the diminishing amount of food they put in a sandwich. Last straw, won’t be coming...
