Definitely a hidden gem! It's tucked in the corner of a strip mall but when you walk in, it's a cute little place with good coffee, good food, nice service. They have a good variety of food items done well with classics and a few unique items. We got the cordadito (love seeing this on menus), blueberry lemon cream cake, and mortadella pistachio kolache and they also came by and gave everyone a couple free samples of Basque cheesecake and their napoleon (?) Everything was well prepared. I was especially pleasantly surprised because I don't like overly sweet desserts but it was the perfect level of sweetness for me across the items we got. Akin to 85 degrees bakery if you like Asian level sweetness. The lemon cream cake also had a great texture, almost like angel food cake or castella where it's got a slight bounce! Someone else mentioned their cookies are pricey but honestly they're huge. Like two cookies put together. They look like a hat. These looked sweeter and perfect for someone who likes eating cookies dough. The ladies were also so pleasant. I'd happily go...
Read moreWhat a find!! This cute little bakery/coffee shop hidden in the corner of a strip mall is a real gem! My husband and I were visiting from Austin and we wanted to find some Venezuelan cachitos (similar to kolaches) and good coffee for breakfast. This place is excellent!! We had a hard time deciding what to order so we got a little bit of averything. Their cachitos are fenomenal. We had Ham and cheese, and Mortadella and pistacho. They also have ham and bacon, turkey and cream cheese, spinach and ricotta. We also tried one of their pastelitos (puffy pastry) filled with cream cheese and turkey We both ordered cappuccinos. They were superb, like the ones you find in European bakeries. To end we got a Milhojas (Mille-feuille or Napoleon) and a Passion fruit tres leches. Both were so fresh and delicious. They were less sweet than other we have tried (or one I make at home) and that made them better! The Napoleon was sooo fresh! They make them daily on Fridays and Saturdays. It was really good, rich and crunchy!! We will...
Read moreI highly recommend Mao's Bakery on Highway 6 in Houston! I was looking for a coffee shop to study in that was NOT Starbucks. I prefer to support small "Mom & Pop" businesses and Mao's Bakery was everything I was looking for! The establishment is tucked away in a strip center. It is small and quaint with a decor that is a combination of modern, chic, and homey. The paint colors were soothing, the chairs were comfortable and the Halloween and Dia de los Muertos decorations put you in the mood to celebrate the fall season. The music playlist was eclectic - a good mix of songs for all different types of musical tastes - and the volume level was not disruptive. (I've been to other places where the music was too loud and the lyrics were offensive, so Mao's was a welcome change.)
I ordered the Tropical Avocado Toast. It had all fresh ingredients and was delicious! The customer service is exceptional! The staff makes you feel welcome and comfortable - as if they've invited you into their home. I will...
