(7/5/2018) UPDATED REVIEW - I'm a little late posting this updated review, but my husband and I returned here for our second visit back in May. The food was still delicious, but the service was so awful and for that reason alone we will not be back. They were not very busy that evening so we were the first to be seated in the patio section and waited a good 5-7 minutes before anyone came over with menus, water, etc. This frustration was magnified by another couple being seated after us, yet served water before us. Additionally, I was not facing the inside of the restaurant so I was not able to see this part, but my husband felt that based on the actions he saw from the bartender and some of the servers that we were being profiled. The final straw was when I asked for a to-go container for the asparagus soup. The waitress brought me one of those standard clear plastic containers, but it was all wet and had particles of something in it ( I wish I had taken a picture!). I asked if it there was a reason it was all wet and her response was "they just washed it for you". I'm not sure if they are reusing containers or what, but I've never ever had a restaurant hand me a wet, "washed" container to use! They didn't even bother to dry it off! It was so unsanitary and unprofessional. Unfortunately we can't overlook these service issues for their good food. (4/23/2018) ORIGINAL REVIEW - I am so glad we tried this place on a whim after reading all the good Yelp reviews...everything was SO yummy! They serve small plates style and all but two of the seven plates we ordered were 1/2 off for happy hour...🙌🏻 The flavors were perfect and we took home plenty of leftovers. This is a great spot to meet people after work or if you just want to try a bunch of different stuff, definitely take advantage of their awesome happy hour (Mon-Fri 4-6pm)! We ordered: {Deviled Eggs} {Grilled Oyster Mushrooms} {Asparagus Soup} {Crab & Spanish Chorizo Fried Rice w/ poached egg} {Chicken Thighs w/ Chorizo & Figs} {Spanish Meatballs} {Caramelized Pork Belly w/ Jicama Slaw} Can't wait to go back and try more!

To start, we're not hard to please and eat out a lot but do feel that Extra Virgin missed the mark on some things. The food is mostly great with a few dishes that were just okay. The eggs were fantastic! The shrimp was good, but the rest of the dish (also good) almost didn't complement the shrimp. The brussel sprouts were rich but good. Be careful with the white bean salad. The olives in it are very small (some of the smallest olives I've ever seen). They are also almost the same color as the beans. My husband bit into the olive so hard (first bite of food) that he may have cracked his tooth. We mentioned this right away, and the waitress said they are supposed to tell customers that the olives aren't pitted when putting the plate down. No one mentioned it, and this has clearly happened before with this dish, yet they didn't even offer any compensation (not even a free $2.50 beer or something) and didn't seem surprised. This isn't a normal olive that's obvious, or we would've known to make sure there wasn't a pit in it. Servers are also supposed to inform a customer if there's an extra charge for something. The waitress asked if my son wanted another soda. He said yes because he thought it was free refills. We got charged for another soda. They also bring a small portion of pita out with the mezzo dip, not a proportionate amount to the dips. We asked if there was any way we could get a little more bread. No mention of an extra charge. They charged us $3. We may have still gotten those things, but it wasn't obvious we would be charged, and it made us feel as if we were being nickeled and dimed. On the plus side, we came during happy hour, and some dishes were half price, some beers were $2.50, and wine was $2 off. We did get dessert. Unforeseen, churros were fried too long and almost burnt. Same with the crostada (fruit pie)...was baked a bit long. We would probably try the restaurant again on another day, but we've been to other restaurants that hit the mark just several blocks away.

Let’s begin with the expectation that this place and their menu is perfectly suited for a group meal...or if you are a glutton like myself and just really enjoy food you could have a ball by yourself. This place ahead a great tapas style menu and there was three of us enjoying this experience tasting a little bit of just about everything on the menu! As I recall each dish we consumed I find it hard to come up with much criticism and what I do generate almost feels like I’m just reaching for something not positive. We ordered the following; deviled eggs, chicken liver, duck tongue tacos, bone marrow, grilled octopus, pork belly ‘boa buns,’ and the grilled skirt steak. Of note the skirt steak pic is missing several slices due to appetites beating the snap of the picture. Of all these dishes the only thing I wish was perhaps slightly different was the serving of octopus. Either a thicker tentacle or multiple tentacles but this is honestly minor. The chicken liver was masterfully cooked on a piece of grilled bread that tastes so yummy with the sauce all soaked into it!! In fact for those nervous about trying liver this is a great entry dish into organ meat, so rich and tender! I’m a huge fan of organ meat but one in my party wasn’t and still loved the dish. I would be not being doing this place justice if I didn’t mention the bone marrow. Again I love marrow and this dish was perfectly salted with a slight crust on top and warm all the way through. I mention the last part as I have had canoe cut bone marrow where the very middle of the marrow was cool and not fully cooked, that was not the case here. Finally a dish worth noting due to its uniqueness was the duck tongue tacos. The texture reminded me of a thin shredded pork slightly dry but so full of flavor. In fact you may think the flavor would be ‘different’ but I didn’t think so and neither did anyone in my group. Def recommend any and all the dishes pictured and make it a day and bring some friends!!

It was the best and worst all wrapped into one meal experience. I was excited to try this tapas restaurant. I love a place where you can share and try lots of kinds of food. Their menu is really creative and you are sure to find something new to try. We started off great. Ordered deviled eggs.Classic but with a little extra spice (possibly horshradish). Real comfort food. Next we had the salad of baby spinach, gorgonzola, cranberries and candied walnuts. Love this kind of salad with different textures and flavors happening. Would have like the spinach stems to be trimmed a little more, and I think feta would have worked better, but that is just my preference. Then the best part of the meal...the pork belly steamed buns. OMG these were delicious! These were not like anything we have really had before. Meaty, spicy, crunchy and a perfect bite of scrumptiousness. I could have gotten three orders of these and been happy all day. But then the meal took a down turn . For the main, large dish we ordered ribeye steak to share with Chipotle onions and pistachios. This was just ok. Large portion, but under-seasoned and the temperature seemed colder than it should have been (like it had been resting too long before it was brought to us). The pistachios didn't add much, so it just seem frivolous to put them on there. The Chipotle onions were good to add some flavor to the steak, but were also cold and too similar in texture to the fatty steak. Lastly, and most disappointing, was the dessert. Dessert is my favorite part of the meal, so we were excited to get something yummy to finish it off. We got churros with chocolate sauce. The churros came out flat, unevenly colored (some burny, some underdone) and extremely oily. We could literally touch the doughy center and our fingers were coated in oil. These were completely inedible. I was surprised they would serve those to us. It was obvious they weren't right to begin with. Luckily the waitress noticed we didn't eat any of the dessert and took the item off our bill. So in conclusion, other than the disastrous dessert, this was one of the best restaurants that we had been to during our visit to Kansas City. Will be having sweet dreams of those delicious pork belly steamed buns for a long...

Not the same Extra Virgin I used to go to weekly prior to Covid. I'm sure it had a direct effect on how their menu is now. Don't get me wrong, food is amazing. However, when we do a reservation, I do not want a hightop in the bar!!! Plenty of open ACTUAL tables for 2. Our server was great. No complaints other than the table, which was not the servers fault. However, it took about 15 min for us to be greeted after being sat. Just a quick "hey I'll bring right there" but we got nothing and then when they did, we realized they walked by us at least 10 times. I ordered the stuffed porkloin.. FABULOUS...BUT.. They was NOTHING to go with it. Like I couldn't get any vegetables or ANY side. There's no sides. The menu read in just one long row. There's no perpetrating from appetizers to entrees. It's very confusing. They come ask if you want to start with something....well, I don't know because to me it ALL looks like entrees. Thankfully I have been a customer here for years. My fiancé had not and was so confused. I wouldn't mind the hightop table in the bar either IF I wasn't dressed for "date night" in a dress having to hike up in a chair when you're 5 ft, makes it hard to be graceful getting up or down. Also we were in a corner. A dark corner. I still love the food. However, I don't think I'll be back, and that saddens me. I also suggest that they describe some of their foods that are not a "mainstream" dish a little more. I had to try and describe certain dishes and I shouldn't have to do that. The menu is not written for anyone that isn't accustomed to higher end food. I think it makes people uncomfortable and unsure of what they're ordering. Just my opinion. But I was not happy with how our valentines dinner turned out after raving about this place. I hope they read this and take some of this to heart. Please ask if it's a romantic date night and if so don't put them in a hightop table in the bar. As someone who's been in service industry, I loved our server. He was absolutely amazing! No complaints on him or even the food. The menu and seating need some work. Michael Smith I hope you read this because I have loved your...

I came here on a Saturday for a birthday dinner with friends. Our reservations were for 7:15 and I arrived at 7:00pm, the first person there. Our table was already ready and I was seated while I waited for everyone else to arrive.

As I waited, our server brought a round of water for the table, but didn't ask me for a drink order. I did flag her down about 10 minutes later for a vodka soda that quickly came out.

The restaurant was very busy. The bar and the patio was fully booked and the place was full of a range patrons of all ages enjoying the food and drinks. It is a bit on the noisy side but once everyone in our party got there we just added to the din.

We ordered a large variety of items on the menu to share among us. I really enjoyed the beef carpaccio. I usually cannot stand taro, but I didn't mind it with this dish. Other hits that we enjoyed were the shishito peppers, chorizo chicken thighs, chickpea fries, and the gua bao/pork belly sliders.

I tried the sliders and I thought they were a little salty, but I am very biased as I'm Taiwanese and make these gua bao at least 2-3 times a month and wasn't really that impressed, but everyone else loved them. I'm a purist when it comes to certain foods :\

We also ordered three desserts to share including the upside down orange cake, the strawberry tres leche and the churros with chocolate. All of the desserts were unbelievably fantastic and I don't have much of sweet tooth. The churros were the lightest, fluffiest I've ever had and I eat them on a daily basis when I'm in Spain, these were better.

Another huge highlight was our server. I didn't catch her name but she was attentive without being intrusive. Our birthday girl was looking for a particular wine and she was able to accommodate her perfectly after finding what she wanted had just come in that day. We were there for about 3 hours and never felt rushed or ignored. They let us enjoy our evening with brilliant service and great food.

Our total came to a little over $50/person before tip but including food and drinks which I thought was super reasonable and a great deal for a...
