Ever since Pita Blu closed, I've been hurting for a quality plate of Greek food. We stopped by this new spot on a rainy weekend afternoon and decided to try a variety from the menu.
The falafel plate had highs and lows. Unfortunately, among the lows were the falafel. Tiny portions that meant they were near burnt on the outside and dry beyond the pale inside. Well seasoned, but rough texture. The supporting elements were great, and did some heavy lifting for the weak falafel. Fresh pita, flavorful veggies, well seasoned tzatziki. This dish has the normal fries. They had a well balanced mix of salt and oregano and were perfectly cooked.
The gyro was packed to bursting with quality ingredients. Properly prepared sliced meat, lots of the same fresh veg as the falafel plate. We tried the Greek fries for this order. In my opinion, these are doing too much. In addition to the seasoning on the normal fries they add feta, garlic, and green onion. The onion is especially egregious and ruined the entire side. It's all you can taste. If they held back the garlic and onion, kept the feta, and added some lemon or vinegar they would be excellent.
The loukoumades are like those donuts you can find at Chinese buffets. However, they are less falvorful than that. Even with the drizzle of honey and the sprinkle of nuts, they didn't stand out among of the other strongly seasoned food. It is a shame because they are made fresh and looked great.
The baklava is some of the best I've ever had. I don't know if they make it in house or ship it in frozen, but whatever they are doing it works. Baklava is near the bottom of my list of preferred desserts at any other place. I'd get it here every time. Richly sweet without letting that sweetness overwhelm the fattiness from the pastry and nuts. Really solid contender in the dessert roster for the area.
I look forward to trying items from their menu. They aren't quite at the level Pita Blu hit, but they're the best we have...
Read moreI was disappointed. I love Greek/Mediterranean food. The only reason I am giving this place a 3 star is because of the customer service and the fact that they just opened, so it will take awhile to get the hang of things. The food was super, super salty. Don't get me wrong, please, because salt to help season food is okay; just not this amount of salt. I ordered the gyro with fries. I thought the fries would come on the side but no they put them inside my sandwich. It was like 3 fries inside my sandwich. I also ordered an extra side of fries that I never got, but I was handed 2 cups for some drinks. I was paying for me and my fiancée to eat. So it was 2 gyros which are $11.95 plus $4 each to add a side of fries and a drink. So I ended up paying 31.90 plus tax plus tip. I will be trying this place again but I want to wait a few months, until the workers and owner get the hang of things. I want to be able to...
Read moreOrdered a beef gyro. Expected fries on the side, per the menu description. Honestly, for an item totaling almost $14 with tax, you’d think that would be the case.
Turns out, the gyro has maybe 5-7 individual fries mixed in with the beef, onions, tzatziki sauce and whatever else was in the pita. In my opinion, for what I received, it should’ve been half that price. Didn’t have a problem with the flavors. It just wasn’t worth it.
Decided to get an order of fries. Almost $5 total. I expected them to be delicious and piping hot for that price. To my disappointment, staff served me my fries immediately (always a bad sign). It was a generous helping of cold fries. Couldn’t even finish them, it was so bad.
Word to the wise: if you’re going to charge premium prices and take up valuable real estate in a nice shopping mall, your cost performance had better deliver on those high...
