What an awful experience; not with the food, but the absolutely abysmal service.
I'd walked in with my family and placed a verbal order for a whole roast duck, which they told me was going to be out fresh in 20 minutes and that we should come back when it was ready. When we came back, we saw the duck on the rack and told them our pick three separate times... Which they brushed aside and told us that yes, yes, they understood and would have our duck ready, despite putting no care in which ducks they sent out. Then we had to wait an extra 10 minutes before they bothered telling us that orders were supposed to be electronic. So okay, we waited 10 more minutes for a combined total of 40 minutes since we first walked in to place our order. This continued on as the entire row of duck started dwindling as customers---some of which we had no idea if they'd placed their order more than 40 minutes ago---came to pick them up.
Then our order arrived and wow! It was not the duck we reminded them three separate times to get, but instead a blackened and nearly burnt one that was left for last as an act of petty revenge for (I'm assuming) being bothersome and pestering them too many times. Not even the reddish brown color of duck, just very dark brown, and I'm not even exaggerating. I wish I had a picture of it to post here, and I'm kicking myself for being so hasty to return it! My family got rightfully upset at being continually dismissed despite actively telling them exactly what we wanted, then when airing out our grievances about being pushed out of priority and getting the worst option they had, they threaten to call the police? Instead of apologizing for the mix-up, offering us another duck similar to what we'd requested, or taking any sort of accountability, the short-haired lady on staff decided that a refund for us to get out of their faces and a threat to the police was the best they could do.
I want to apologize to the customers there who had an uncomfortable experience. We have no grounds to judge the food, since we didn't even get our order, so maybe it's worth trying if you can tolerate being blatantly disrespected. Judging from another review here, orders seem to be mismanaged more than you'd like. I'm just baffled about what I just experienced. Honestly, a roach in my food would be preferable to the petty middle school antics they decided were appropriate for a...
Read moreChung Wang Cantonese BBQ is a great spot for authentic, no-frills Cantonese barbecue that really hits the mark. If you’re craving roast duck, crispy pork belly, or BBQ pork (char siu), this place delivers with bold flavors and generous portions.
The roasted meats are the star of the show. The duck is rich, tender, and perfectly seasoned, with beautifully crisp skin. The crispy pork belly is another standout—crunchy on top with layers of juicy meat and fat that melt in your mouth. Their char siu has a sweet-savory glaze and just the right amount of caramelization.
One of the best ways to enjoy the meats is over rice or in a combo platter. The portions are big, and the prices are reasonable, making it a great value. They also offer noodle soups, stir-fried greens, and other classic dishes that round out the menu nicely.
Service is fast and efficient, though not overly chatty—which is typical for traditional Chinese BBQ spots. It’s more of a “get your food and enjoy” kind of vibe, especially during peak hours when it gets busy. That said, the staff is helpful if you have questions or want to customize your order.
The dining space is clean but basic, so don’t expect fancy decor—come here for the food. Takeout is a popular option, and they package everything well for travel, which is great if you’re bringing food home for the family.
The only reason it’s not a full five stars is that certain cuts of meat can sometimes be a bit fatty or salty depending on the batch, but overall the quality is consistently good.
Chung Wang is a solid choice for authentic Cantonese BBQ. If you’re craving roasted meats that taste like they came straight out of Hong Kong, this place...

Saturday night I had the pleasure of attending Chow Down at Chung Wang BBQ in Katy's awesome Asia town. It was a meet and greet for members of Chow Down in Chinatown. If you are unfamiliar with this group and consider yourself a foodie, you are most certainly doing yourself a disservice if you do not join. I have learned so much about Asian cuisine from that group. It's a smorgasbord of info about Asian cuisine and Asian small businesses. Go find them on FB and join up.
Soze about the dinner at Chung Wang: On top of getting me an awesome T-shirt, we also feasted on a Triple BBQ Meat Plate (Duck, Ribs, BBQ Pork) with Rice, Soup Dumplings (Xiao Long Bao), Vegetable Egg Rolls, Beef Chow Fun, Cantonese Cured Pork with Cauliflower, Ginger Onion Double Lobster with Crispy Sticky Rice, Jumbo Skrimps, Steamed Bak Choy, and I am sure I'm forgetting something because I obviously lapsed into a food coma after stuffing my face like the piggy I am. I also had a bottle of water (cuz I'm counting calories.)
All the food was just fantastic and you absolutely need to come out and get some for yourselves, but the people I got to meet made the evening even better. We met this family from Trinidad & Tobago of all places and traded secrets on where to get great Caribbean food (they highly recommended J&D Caribbean Cuisine on Mason Rd for authentic Trini food. So you KNOW I'll be writing about a visit there very soon!)
Anyheck - if you find yourself out west, a trip to Chung Wang will...
