Overall: I would definitely go back and try more of the menu!
FOOD: Pork Belly Bao $4 (pork belly slow braised in soy and mirin, fresh slaw, hoisin peanut sauce, served on a Chinese steamed bun): I did not enjoy this bao which is hard for me since I love bao! There was too much of everything else and not enough pork belly. The piece of pork belly was so thin and small that you barely tasted it.
Combo Plate Chicken Karaage and Hawaiian Fried Chicken $15 (Karaage - boneless fried chicken with sweet and tangy house sauce; Fried Chicken - boneless fried chicken with garlic sesame soy chili sauce): Both the karaage and Hawaiian fried chicken was very good. The chicken were fried pretty well but most of the crispiness disappears due to the sauce coated on the outside. The flavor was there but not the crispiness but that is partly my fault for expecting Japanese style karaage.
Chop Chop Salad (romaine heart, ham, apples, tomato, cilantro, red onions, parmesan, and provolone cheese): No price as this is included with any plate item. I liked but didnt like the salad (if that makes sense). There is a lot of dressing as its fully coated every item in the salad which is actually a huge plus to me BUT I'm not a fan of ham or fruit being in my salad.
Da Hilo Boy Burger $14 (Loco moco burger - charred beef patty, caramelized onion, smoked bacon confit, mushroom, and fried egg): The burger is huge and looked extremely good. I did not eat this as someone else in our party had it. They enjoyed the burger a lot - said the flavor and texture was on point.
Kimchi Fried Rice $15.50 (kimchi, smoked bacon, caramelized onion, fried egg): I did not have this but it looked extremely delicious and the person in our group said its something they ordered repeatedly.
Chicken Karaage Kids Meal $6 (boneless fried chicken with sweet and tangy house sauce, served with fries).
RESTAURANT/INTERIOR: Clean and minimal restaurant. They didnt have the full seating due to the pandemic (I assume). If its a concern to anyone, they did not space the tables 6 feet apart which is fine as the restaurant is pretty small. There was one row of tables on one side of the restaurant that was not available for seating. The restaurant did provide disposable tissue next to every door (main door and restrooms) for customers to use so no one has to touch the handles directly.
STAFF: Everyone was friendly. The front of the house team was pretty much on top of everything - knew regulars by name, delivered the food and also offered to get utensils and napkins for each person, etc.
My only issue with the team was food service was kind of slow. I'm not sure if its due to short staff or a lot of to-go orders but when we first ordered and sat down, I noticed none of the tables had their food and the restaurant was...
Read moreIf you are a fellow carb and protein enthusiast, you may want to check this place out. We entured into the hallowed halls of Box and Burgers, and let me tell you, it was... an experience. We came during lunch time and the lunch rush so the wait time was longer than my to-do list on a Monday morning. I swear, I saw people aging in real-time. But, you know what? It gave me ample opportunity to contemplate the meaning of life, and also to admire the sheer dedication of the other cuttomers who were enjoying their food like squirrels at a nut convention.
Then, the burger finally came. It was a glorious, juicy, towering masterpiece. The patty was super thick. The burgercwas built like a meaty Jenga game, but instead of wooden blocks, it was layers of tasty. I practically had to unhinge my jaw like a python to tackle it, and it was worth every glorious, messy bite. ( PSA if you get the burger, make sure to get extra napkins)
Now, let's talk about the sauces. They charged me for them. Charged! I felt a brief moment of betrayal, like a friend who suddenly asks for rent. But then, I tasted the garlic aioli ( at least i think thats what it was) . It was like a creamy, garlicky hug for my tastebuds. So, fine, Box and Burgers, you win this round. Just consider it a "flavor tax."
In conclusion, if you have a few hours to spare, a healthy appetite, and a willingness to pay a small fee for liquid gold (aka, sauce), Box and Burgers is a must-try. Just bring a book, a portable charger, and maybe a small support group for the wait. You'll emerge victorious, with a full belly and a story to tell. 5 out of 5 stars, would wait for the food again...
Read moreA small local burger place with a quaint atmosphere and good food presentation. Though the wood planks look nice that your burger is served on, they aren't practical. It's not clear if customers need to self-bus their tables, but there is a place to bring your dishes and trash when done next to the drink station. I haven't ordered anything other than burgers so this review is purely on this which is their mainstay. I've been here twice and ordered two different burgers. Both times, the burger presentation was fantastic. However, the thick burger is almost flavorless. They do pile on a lot of other condiments that add lots of flavor and help make the burgers here very unique from other burger restaurants. But a burger patty needs to stand on its own and it just doesn't here. Also, another huge aspect of a burger is the bun. Both times the buns look good but are extremely dry and a bit too much bun. Further, while they do offer to cook your burger to your specifications, my "medium" request (some pink in the middle) came back "well" (no pink, fully cooked throughout) and my kids "medium" request came back "medium-rare" (lots of red in the middle). Lots of potential here and the burgers sound delicious. But there's a lot of improvement...
