Wood fired, is it still? This used to be one of our favorite go-to spots for delicious Neapolitan style pizza, made in a legit wood-fired oven with delightfully creative toppings. The crust properly done with some blistered spots on top and a browned, thin, crisp bottom and tender, flavorful dough. Good service, good beer, good cocktails, and a nice environment, all close to home.
Something happened! I first chalked it up to getting take out. It won't be as crisp as fresh out of the oven no-worries. Then we could dine outside on the street! Alas still the same disappointing pizza results. Maybe COVID mehem meant they were having to rush their timing or maybe there were new and untrained staff. No worries, I'll come back and give it another chance. After disappointment number dine-in number two, we asked what was going on. We were told there was a change to the oven and perhaps there may be a minor change in the way it cooks. I cannot confirm that was what really happened although it seems likely the results of a too-cold floor of the oven. Pizza on top looks great, crust on bottom, not so much, unless you enjoy a flacid and soggy bottom. I do realize that we are Neapolitan pizza snobs but the loss of a regular favorite feels like a bigger deal than it would be for most.
To be fair the other food is still good, pizza is okay, the servers are usually great, and everything else is as-was from my perspective. It is just not a stellar pizza choice for us anymore earning is a meh rating when there are better pies within biking distance.
It has been a couple months since we last tried it and if I can talk my partner into giving it another go and we find a return to the former pizza glory I will revise my report and give them the 5 stars believe they earned in the past. #IWantYouBack
Update, we went back and the pizza was improved so I’m bringing my...
Read moreWe love this new spot in Lakeview! It has a great trendy atmosphere. It’s dark and loud so I recommend this spot for a casual date night or a dinner spot with friends to start your evening. They have a rotating short (~6) list of great cocktails - every single one I’ve ordered has been amazing - and their pizza is phenomenal. I’ve had the Standard Bearer, Bank Raaber, Red Riding Hog and the Brussel Mania. I would recommend them all, but don’t forget to add the Rosemary infused honey they give you along with the red paper flakes and Parmesan. It really makes the pizza!
They also have a great deal on Tuesday’s. Not sure how long that will last, but you can get a cocktail and/or beer + a pizza for $15.
They often have a long wait so make a reservation if you want a table. Otherwise we’ve always found a spot at the bar after 5-10...
Read moreMy wife and I went here for lunch on a whim after getting haircuts the other day. The open storefront and large indoor and outdoor dining areas provided ample seating while allowing for proper social distancing. The menu looks small, but everything offered seems to be a hit. This location, at least for now, is under the same roof as Dry Hop brewery, and all of their beers are available. For around $20 per person, you can have a nice lunch and a pint of beer. The dining area is very clean, and to cut down on waste, paper menus have been benched in favor of a digital menu that is easy to access and order from. If you enjoy spicy food, the Hot Chicken sandwich is no slouch, but not too hot to be enjoyed with some cold beer. Portions are generous and staff are...
