Been going to this place since back when they were Verrazzano's/NY Pizza on Sandhill and Flamingo, but we've been away for a few years. They evolved into Metro Pizza. John Arena always put out a quality product for a decent price. And it was just a FUN place to be! So you can imagine we were very eager to go back to a fantastic neighborhood pizza joint from years ago.
It seems the next generation need to pickup the pace a bit though.
The previous restaurant was always top notch clean...not any longer! First off, I noticed all exterior windows were dirty, signs were removed or partially missing letters, and the outside looked unkempt. This was NOT like the owners I knew wo took extreme pride in their business.. Inside all the sills around the booths were dusty. It was as if they had not been dusted in at least 10-14 days.
The bathroom was dirty too. The toilet had black marks around it like a plunger of dark boots had been rubbed against it, the floor was grimy, and the towel dispensers were broken, or the staff simply didn't take the time to fill it properly. At least they had soap and a roll of paper towels sitting on the counter. It did NOT feel dirty food wise, so I want to be clear on that--just general housekeeping.
The server was nice and competent, but she seemed harried. Service felt much more like a counter diner than a neighborhood pizza place. Again this is not the Metro Pizza we grew up with. She did not seem to have a dedicated busser along with her. Service was always well above pay grade at Metro previously. It's not the server, but the overall that drives a 3 star.
I know the owners were young men when I was just a kid in school, so I imagine they are in retirement--a well-earned retirement! Running that place as well as they did for decades took full dedication. Nowadays, something is OFF. IDK...maybe they sold it to a corporation or someone who is an absent owner. This place needs a captain and a good senior NCO to get things back in order.
I wasn't expecting much for the food after our walk-in impressions, but the pizza was still good! Margherita pizza is one of their best--I recommend it!
I will go back mainly because I know what they once were, and I hope they wil be that again. And the pizza is still quite good...maybe take-out is the way to go. However, had this been a first visit, I would not return. Someone in management needs to get after this ASAP, or I suspect this business will be sold or underwater in 1-2 years. Also, miss your...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI've visited this restaurant approximately 8 times in the past 5 years. The first visits were dine in and all was good. The food was good and the service was I'd say average. After this I started using the take out option and enjoyed the food and service. However, after having a very unpleasant dine in experience two years ago I stopped using them. Time passed and on Sunday Jan 21st 2024 I decided to give them another try as I was craving spaghetti with meat sauce. The young lady who took my phone order (Amber I believe) was very friendly and professional. When I asked for a "Side of Sausage" she replied let me make sure we have it avail. She confirmed it was in fact available and finalized my order. This was the end of the good experience...... When I arrived to pick up my food I was met by a rude cashier who appeared to be assisting another waitress cash out... I was told to wait and they would be with me in a minute.. After waiting patiently and watching the two women work on cashing out other tickets for about 10 minutes, another young man asked I needed help... He read my order to me and stated that I had a side of meet balls... I explained that I in fact had ordered a side of Italian sausage. He looked surprised and said let me check. The young man returned with a bag of food and told me the total. I asked if the order was made correctly and he assured me it had. I paid for the food and noticed I dint see bread in the bag. I asked if The order came with bread and was told that it did not. I asked why as in the past It had always come with a small side of regular bread. The female cashier stated, "That was like two tears ago... We don't give out bread anymore"... I replied politely, "yes its been a while since Ive been here... How much for a side of bread?" The young man said $5.00... The female cashier told me that she would simply give me a small side of bread.... But then came back and said they were all out of bread... I found this odd as they were gong to be open for another 4 hours serving their dining room without any bread.... Oh well.... When I return home I find that not only did I not receive bread.... I was missing my blue cheese dressing for my salad and the side of sausage.... The cooks actually put what appeared to be one small scoop of sauce on a HUGE serving of pasta and paper this slices of pizza topping sausage on my spaghetti... Needless to say I trashed the entire meal.... So much for the 2nd chance with...
Ā Ā Ā Read morePlease read to the end. This place is popular among locals and tourists alike, and for good reason! The pizza is fresh, flavorful, and made with love. The biggest problem anyone has with pizza is one made HALF COOKED. Not here!! Perfectly crisp from center to edge! Great selection and well seasoned. We ordered the Honolulu pizza for a second time and must commend their consistency.
The cannoli are a work of art. The shell is not made too sweet as to not over power the sinfully delicious sweetened mascarpone cheese. The mini semi-sweet chocolate chips tie it all in for a balanced bite and an excellent example of what a cannoli should truly taste of. Granted, the shell seemed almost old, like they were made and sat in the fridge for just a little too long.
My only real problem and sole reason this review is 3 stars instead of 5, was one of my most favorite dishes of all time; the Macaroni and Cheese. It was a shambolic, insulting and abhorrently bland show of half-witted craftsmanship. Here I am at a well known and loved pizzeria thinking "okay, now they are really going to blow my mind with the Mac". It was not to be. Unlike the fine plated fare of the antipasto salad, this dish was dumped on to a plate and served up with no affection whatsoever. I regret not taking a photo. I was expecting at least some form of flavor being in a restaurant full of flavorful cheeses and spices. I REALIZE NOW IT WAS VELVEETA SERVED OVER PREMADE BOXED MACARONI. Not even added salt or pepper, nor a sprinkle of extra REAL cheese on top. It was the most disappointing plate of food I have ever set my eyes upon. Please, someone from Metro, read my review!!! You need to work on your recipe just a tad!
If you are looking for a great atmosphere and fine pizza, do not hesitate to come by! Just don't...
