This was my first visit and all I can say is, it's ok, but to be fair I was there after their rush about two hours before they close at 1pm. I will reevaluate this score after two or three more visits. They have many things worth trying and I absolutely must try their smoked burgers. I do want to ask them if it's possible to time a burger order to catch one fresh off the smoker so it's not refrigerated before being grilled to serve.
This visit I ordered the three meat plate with pulled pork, brisket, and turkey with baked beans and coleslaw. I was pleased with the prices. They may be the most competitively priced BBQ in town. With out doing a side by side comparison and only from memory, I'd say they are are at least two dollars less per plate than their nearest competition and the combo meal prices are comparable with others daily specials.
The best part of my meal was the two sides. They were generously portioned and delicious. The beans are served piping hot. They're a little on the sweet side, with just the right amount of spice. The coleslaw was simple, cool, creamy, with no over powering spices or any celery seed, not to sweet, sour, or spicey. This is the coleslaw that most folks who don't care for coleslaw will eat happily.
Every thing wasn't perfect. The pulled pork was dry and the brisket was not very tender. The brisket was moist to the point of being wet and I suspect it was being held in au jus. I'm hoping the dry pork was a one off and I am aware that restaurants around here hold brisket in a variety of ways involving water. I'm of the opinion if you're going to steam or soak meat especially sliced meat there is no point in smoking it. The smoke flavors are just going to be washed out.
Not all was lost meat wise. The turkey was my favorite of the three meats. It was very moist for a smoked turkey breast and had a pleasant smoky flavor. The pork and brisket were rescued by my BBQ sauce selection of the mild and citrus flavors. Both were similarly sweet with enough spicy heat to leave a pleasant lingering heat that makes you look forward to...
Read moreThe service here is on point! I love this place! Just go. You will not be disappointed.
The ribs were delicious and meaty. They are sticky ribs and not dry rub.
The chicken sandwich and waffle fries, on point. The chicken was fried crispy, tender, and juicy inside. The spicy mayo was great. The waffle fries were so crispy, not a lot of grease came out of them, crunchy even after cooled off. On point.
The cole slaw was just cole slaw. Nothing spectacular about it. It was good. Just plain.
The Jalapeño Mac & Cheese was on point! Cheesy. Right amount of spice with the jalapeño. The macaroni had a nice texture and wasn't overcooked. This was really good. It will be just as good without the jalapeños if that is too spicy for you.
The brisket had a good bark and a good smoke ring to it. It was tender, but it was over dry and made you want more BBQ sauce on it or a big swig of water.
The brisket would normally put this down a star for my review, but after talking with the manager, Aaron, he said that he was already working on ways to get that brisket better and to retain the juices and everything else. Aaron was very receptive to the feedback that I suggested, and talking with people about it was respected.
The restaurant was clean and tidy. There is not a lot of space here for a sit down, but it does accommodate about 20 people or so.
The only other thing besides the brisket that would make this place better is that it would have been nice to have a cold beer with our food.
And not the least, they offer club patrons a large breakfast offering late nights on Friday and Saturday nights during the warmer...
Read moreThis has to be one of the best lunch places in Lincoln for BBQ. The Pulled Pork and Brisket are among the best I have ever eaten anywhere. Including what I make in my own smoker. The ingredients from the meat, to the salads are of the highest quality and it shows. Few places go out of their way to keep it fresh and cook things the RIGHT way.
Why I liked the pork so much, it was smoked properly, not over smoked and there was little to no fat anywhere on the sandwich. I suspect they use pork loin instead of shoulder which is a little leaner. This is the way to go if you don't like chunks of fat in your sandwich, which I do not. Now I know many out there will say fat adds flavor, and they are not wrong, but to much fat makes it chewy. Myself, I like it a little less fatty and this was very lean and very tasty. The Sweet Chili sauce was very good, and so was the Hot Sauce
Bottom Line, this place is one of the best kept secrets for lunch downtown. If you are looking for some great BBQ Pork or Brisket, you have to try this place next time you are downtown. You will not regret it. Be sure to get there before noon, because they don't have a lot of seating and they get very busy between noon and 12:30 for the downtown lunch crowd. My wife works downtown but we get there around 11:45 and we usually have no trouble grabbing a seat.
If you have not tried C. Berry's yet, you should. I promise that you will not be disappointed. Yes, it...
