McDowell's Soulfood & BBQ — Restaurant in Long Beach

Ordered back in November and the food was amazing! I was so excited to find this place. Then I ordered again on Jan 5 and it was like I ordered from a completely different restaurant. I ordered $90 worth of delivery through Uber (due to disability) and I couldn’t eat most of the food. I even opted in the $2 tip (the most uber allowed thankfully) to the restaurant that Uber allows. I ordered the smothered pork chops plate, the bbq chicken plate (I originally ordered the ribs but they didn’t have any), both with side of greens and Mac n cheese. The bbq chicken was good but got a small wing and the breast was all bones, not much meat. Mac n cheese was like someone just boiled noodles and threw some shredded cheese on it unmelted, gross and slimy. I ordered a side of seasoned fries, green beans, candied yams, and a piece of cheesecake. The only thing edible was the cheesecake, yams, and the bbq chicken. Everything else (greens, pork chops w/ gravy rice, green beans) was drenched in salt, like someone poored a whole container of salt on it, no exaggeration! They had to know this and others had to have noticed this. Ironically the seasoned fries were not seasoned and the only thing besides the Mac n cheese that had absolutely no salt. The cornbread tasted and smelled like someone mixed it with yellow cake batter. I called the restaurant and the woman on the phone tried to tell me everyone’s preference is different. Girl I know my seasoning and the actual seasoning was fine it was the salt content that ruined it. To top it off it took the Uber driver over an hour so the food was cold and there was congealed fat all over everything cuz the juice spilled out of the containers. Anyway I wasn’t refunded and had to throw it all away. I see comments here are similar to mine with the food being inconsistent, awful, and inedible. I hate to say it and I hate to see it but if this keeps happening like this, unfortunately this restaurant is gonna bomb and go under, which is a complete shame. Whatever you all are doing differently needs to change back. Fire the cook who is doing this cuz it has to be if one minute it’s amazing the next...

I’m sorry I have to leave this come yet Lord have mercy cabbage is supposed to have a smoke taste no seasoning.. I had to drain my cabbage in a drainer it taste like somebody poured salt all through the cabbage.. And I very much eat takeout and I’m a soulful woman from Louisiana.. The Black Eyed Peas didn’t have no juice or gravy little flavor to it they were dry.. The Mac was greedy it wasn’t juicy and he didn’t have the right cheese flavor.. One of my cornbread muffins was white yellow and the other one had a brown plays on the top.. The baked chicken in the fried chicken was OK it’s just at the season sit at the top, Chicken season wasn’t blended. I am in Bixby Knolls California and I travel all the way to twin smokehouse barbecue I’ve been eating here for 7 years. Very much eat at Sal gumbo.. Your business used to be call Taqueria’s…. I try all Soulfood in Long Beach and being a southern lady.. y’all need to step your game up… No offense but this is my opinion and feelings when it comes to soul food and taste.. over seasoning With salt . A little smoke and a little seasoning salt makes a big difference. the Mac taste like it had salt .the cabbage taste like it had tons of salt, I drain the cabbage completely now when people are specially diabetics and you’re black that’s when you can tell it’s too much salt in food. but I told my mom the cornbread was very OK.. And my mom is from the southern part of Louisiana so I was a little disappointed and I paid more because mice was delivering what is OK God bless your business and cut back on...

My first impression of this place is very homely a warming place to be the young lady at the register was very inviting good customer service, also very informal about the menu me & my son wanted the ox🐂tails but they where sold out for the day. I ordered 2 orders of the smothered porkchops🥩 for me and my son with greens💚,candy🍬Yams🍠,Cabbage💚,Macaroni &Cheese🧀 dont forget the cornbread it was Triditional Los Angeles version of solefood the gravy & rice was a complete complement to the 2 large Pork chops that was served the cool aid was also Trditional in Los Angeles fashion I also order a baked chicken🐔 to go with green💚 beans🫘,& redbean🫘 & rice it was also good Triditional 👍 😋 👌 Los Angeles solefood. The environment had TVs📺 for dine in entertainment McDowell's had a movie🎬 playing▶️ a Marvel movie that was very kid friendly. The rest room was half way complete but fairly modern can't wait to see it completely refurbished I am big on a restaurants restroom it just need some small upgrades to only a few items for it to be comfortable like the eating area Had to park at the the chasebank there is no parking available right at the restaurant door entrance so be prepared to walk McDowell's also takes ebt accepted which I think is very accommodating. Also a trick that we enjoyed candy🍬Yams🍠with the cornbread together❤️ was truly a treat I will be getting these 2 items everytime that I frequent...
