Blackbird Pizza Shop — Restaurant in Los Angeles

The deep dish pizza was AMAZING! The service was some of the worst I’ve ever had. My daughter and I arrived and after several minutes a young man if short stature came to seat us. There were two other tables of two and no one else in the place. The young man went around lit candles and was out back for quite some time. When he finally arrived to take our order, it was as if he was discouraging us from ordering. He said repeatedly it would take 20-25 minutes for the pizza to be made. We said that’s fine. We ordered a one topping deep dish pizza and a coke... nothing else. After 15 minutes we decided he’d forgotten the coke, so my daughter got up to ask for one. Literally at this point the bartender was sitting at the bar eating her pizza and there was one couple at a table (who had already eaten, cleaned up and were just texting before they left) in the restaurant. Five minutes later the same young man brought over a glass of ice and a can of coke, my daughter stopped me before I poured my coke, in the glass were little dark things and the glass was dirty, as the short man was MIA, as he was most of the time, so I got up and asked the tall waiter if I could have a new glass with ice. He looked at the glass as I showed him all the black stuff in it. Within a minute he brought over a new clean glass with ice. At this point a young patronncame in to put in a takeout order for a pizza. It had been 30 minutes since we’d ordered (not since we’d been seated) no one else had come in. 20 minutes later the “order to go” patron returned, paid for his pizza and left, my daughter said maybe we should see if he forgot to put the order in... at that moment the tall waiter came out with our pizza and sat it down. We each took out a slice and it was lukewarm. Delicious, but I like my pizza hot. I put my finger on the pizza and tray and commented to my daughter that it must have been sitting out back for quite some time before they remembered to bring it to us. After ten minutes as we were each finished the shorter MIA gentleman came over to ask how it was. I didn’t respond my daughter gave a half hearted fine. We waited 15 more minutes and no one came back so my daughter got up and asked for a box and the check. Maybe the truck here is to get your order to go! The pizza was amazing and would have been otherworldly had it been hot, service can make or break a business.... I’ve worked as a waitress since the age of 12....I can look past one or two issues, and I can u derstand a busy time but there was no excuse for the beyond poor service. So to begin, it has been years since I had a Chicago style deep dish pizza to the point where I wouldn’t have a real experience to compare this to. The way I really came to this place was with doubts that I or my company would enjoy the Chicago style deep dish. Well I am here to tell you that if you know ANY nay-sayers of the Chicago deep dish take them to blackbird. They will become believers.

Today I was served by Symphony and Voylkev. Symphony was very attentive to our needs and very sweet, I would have tipped her more but I’m a bit short on money at the moment. Voylkev was working the bar and was a chill personality that was also kind. I’m not sure if Voylkev is how you spell it, he’s been 1 month in the states having come from Ukraine.

So today we came during happy hour and had an IPA, a glass of wine, 2 personal deep dish pizzas, and a plate of hot wings.

I chose the 10% IPA and it tasted as strong as it should, if you want a drink to get buzz going fast there’s your choice. The glass of wine was a red that started with a C and it was rich and smooth.

The plate of wings came with 10 bone in Buffalo wings, some celery sticks, and a cup of blue cheese. The Buffalo wings were great but were definitely spicier than your average Buffalo wings. Keep the blue cheese or the celery stalks handy.

The two pizzas we got were the Mary’s Chicken and the Balls Deep. Both were excellent. The sauce in both were moist and flavorful, there was plenty of cheese, and the crust was quite literally perfect. Very crunchy while providing a strong structure whenever you grabbed a slice. Specifically, the Mary’s chicken had a pesto sauce that combo’d deliciously with the tomato sauce. The chicken also made everything even juicier in just the right way. Meanwhile the Balls Deep has the same basis but instead of adding pesto or chicken, it adds thick meatballs in case you want something more filling.

For prices, I think all the regular prices are great especially since the personal pizza actually is enough for 1 person. So to have happy hour prices, blackbird is an even sweeter deal that anyone wanting to try Chicago style...

Wait time and staff customer service - 0 star. Extremely disappointed with the 'curbside' wait time. I ordered ahead to avoid waiting so long and my curbside pick up time is supposed to be 7:39pm. As instructed in the app, I called the store to inform I am outside - we parked right at the door by 7:35pm. The staff who answered the call confirmed the order is not ready - I ended up going in the restaurant twice to check whatever happened to the order - he just keeps saying its not ready. 3rd time I went in, I finally got the order at 8:20pm - staff even said 'he was waiting/looking for us'??? I went in 2x and parked by the door wasn't enough for him to recognize his customer? I was sitting outside! The idea of curbside is I am not supposed to get out of the car! and the car details are in my order if the staff even cares to check order details. And do I really need to make multiple follow ups??? The store had 3 customers at that time! It's not like they were soooo busy! Please don't over commit the expected wait time, if you cant deliver by the expected time you gave the customers, at least basic courtesy from the staff or whoever that the kitchen is behind and we have to wait a few more minutes. Thus the reason for an overall customer experience of 2 stars.
