My husband and I were visiting LA over the weekend and decided to have some food here on Saturday 4/13/19. I ended up regretting my decision. When we were placing our order, the lady in the front with the blonde hair was extremely rude. First off she was staring at me, very awkwardly. Aside from giving attitude when we asked a question about the menu item, she went on to further surprise us. After placing our order, about 30 seconds later we decided we wanted to change one of the items. My husband got up and informed her, and she gave him an attitude stating that it is too late, then ended up changing it after rolling her eyes. It’s not like the chef had already prepared it, all of this happened within 30 seconds. It wasn’t that big of a deal, and we were ok with keeping the original items if it wasn’t possible to change.
After we finished eating, we wanted to order some desserts and drinks. However, the lady came and snatched the plates from us, then said "are u guys finished?" No restaurant staff has ever done this before. Usually they will come and ask how the food was, or if you need anything else. They ask if they can take the plate, not snatch it first. After seeing this I decided I don't want to order any desserts because it was clear that she wanted us out of there as quickly as possible, even though there was another table of about four people who were there before us, just sitting around (finished with their food). They were Iranian though, so maybe that was the difference. We are not Persian, I wear a headscarf and my husband has a beard. If she is an Islamophobe, I don't understand why you guys claim this is a halal restaurant then. I came here to feel comfortable, not to feel harassed.
I thought the menu on the board looked pretty cool, as it looked like it was written in chalk. However, the writing was so neat that I thought maybe it's some chalk looking font/stickers? Not sure, just looked from a distance. Nevertheless, my husband asked her about the menu above the register after he paid. I was still in my seat when I saw and heard her respond: "I don't know, I don't know. I can't answer that question." She rolled her eyes and stormed off.
What kind of customer service is this? We didn't come there for a charity meal. We paid for it. We didn't deserve that kind of behavior. If you don't know the answer, just say so. She had a disgusting attitude from start to finish. We wanted to purchase more desserts and drinks but thanks to her we didn't. I will not be recommending this place to anyone, instead, I will be vocal in speaking out against it to any of my friends or family who visit LA. Truly a disgrace.
To be fair, the food wasn't terrible. I'm giving it 1 star to get everyone's attention. The white sauce was too sweet so I suggest you taste it before pouring it all over your food. Also, they don't have any chutney or in house hot sauce. We asked for hot sauce and got the red sriracha sauce--not too fond of that with persian food. Otherwise, the...
Read moreWe were visiting LA for the weekend, and looking for new restaurants to try. We came across Naab Cafe, and before heading there, I called and confirmed if the place served Halal food to meet my dietary restriction. The cafe had a small seating area in the front (it has a bigger lounge in the back serving hookah), we grabbed a menu and sat at an empty table. After deciding what we want, we asked the server (blonde lady), about the menu items. I asked her about the different types of Koobideh (not familiar with that regional nomenclature), and if they are similar to Koftah (ground meat) which I'm more familiar with. She rudely replied "you don't know what's Koobideh! It's Koobideh! It's Koobideh!"-it's like she was trying to make me feel stupid. I hastily ordered, as I felt she was irritated by our presence. Less than a minute later, I went up to the front to ask if I can change my order, and with attitude she said "No, I already told inside, they making it already". Like seriously, you just took my order like 30 seconds ago, I'm sure the chef didn't prepare it yet. Besides, I ordered a similar dish with an extra Koobideh.
Our food was served with this sweet white sauce. i asked her if they had any hot or alternative sauces, where she gave us a bottle of sriracha sauce (they should have other house sauces). After we finished eating, we were discussing what desserts and drinks to order (baklava with hot tea), but before we could order, she came to our table and without asking if we're finished or if we'd like to order anything else, she snatched our plates away saying "You guys are finished!", and made a mess on the table. Usually we clean up after ourselves, to make the servers job easier, but here she made more of a mess than us eating-it was clear she wanted us out.
While getting up to pay at the front, we admired the chalk board menu, and wondered if it was written by hand. Upon paying and leaving a tip (despite the humiliating customer service we received), I asked her about the chalk menu. She unexpectedly (well I should have expected it after how she treated us all night) said, "I don't know! I don't know! I can't answer that question! I didn't make the menu!" as she stormed off.
I just want to say, this was the worst customer service I've received from any restaurant. It was clear she didn't like us, and didn't want to serve us. It seemed like she had something against us personally. I don't know if it's because we're Muslims (or looked Muslim, as I have a beard, and my wife wears a head scarf), but ironically they're supposedly Muslims and serving Halal food. Nevertheless, I will not be returning to this restaurant, nor recommend anyone here, and will share my experience with everyone. It's a shame because the food was...
Read moreNabe Café is horrible in the UCLA area and Westwood, CA. It’s super tiny and inadequate in many aspects. First, parking is limited here, whether you’re at the front or back. It’s very congested and will bring discomfort. I came on 12/22/24 with my cousins from the Northern part. We came upon a waitress who didn’t clearly communicate, showed a lack of enthusiasm for the customers, and did not have a care for the business. Beforehand, we came from a family trip, and the kids were hungry. We saw this location, expecting that they’d cater to us. It was not the case here at all. I may be mistaken for seeing this as a new policy, but if you desire to cater, you must do it online before coming. This was not the case for my family during my previous visit to the Encino location. Stay away if you plan to go with a more prominent family; the Marina Del Ray and Encino locations are better, and you’ll feel the community spirit at either. This was my first and last visit; this review...
