Ktown actually has a handful of Thai restaurants, and this block in particular has a few. Ocha Classic distinguishes itself nicely with some fine cuisine and approachable atmosphere, tempered mostly by some higher end prices and a truly inevitable parking setup.
The interior is decked with orange seats and wood awnings giving a unique Thai sensibility, but the colored lights and casual clientele make the restaurant feel very accessible. While many tables ordered soups which are served in a unique furry steel container, one thing of note is that basically every dish including the appetizers starts around 10, meaning that small groups will find it a little pricey to try several items on the menu.
As an individual I just went for the combo w(a 13.50 meal where you select from two main dishes and get a house soup, available all day). I got orange chicken and chow mein - that may sound suspiciously like a bad Chinese take out meal, but make no mistake it was uniquely Thai.
The noodles were thinner and had a light soy taste to them. Not bad, though not my style of noodle personally. Worth adding also that the beef (one of four options - beef, chicken, pork, or shrimp) while cut nice and thin, didn't feel that warm, as if it'd been taken out of a fridge and cooked until it was browned outside. For me the worst beef is chewy beef and this wasn't that, but certainly nothing to write home about. The meal also came with a very light soup - cilantro, mushrooms and green onions basically. I don't think I'd order it on its own (not that it looks like you can) but as part of the meal it was pleasant.
On the other hand, the orange chicken was by far the highlight though. Puffy light crust coats a juicy tender chicken that seems like it melts in your mouth - filling delicious and a sublime mix of textures - it was some of the best orange chicken I've ever had.
So some hit, some meh with the food, at a slightly above average price. It's a fine place, but I wouldn't go too far out of my way for it, especially with metered street parking being effectively non existent and the only alternative being a parking lot in the back which appears to charge $6 AFTER validation - an insane arrangement in this part of town, or any really.
It is in short a fine restaurant, with some reservations that make it not quite worth planning a trip around, but if you're already in the area certainly...
Read moreMy rating is based on the poor costumer service and how unprofessional and poorly coordinated it is .My family and I have enjoyed the food here while we go out into town and visit LA for many years in the past .however the poor costumer service provided from the male employee they had hosting who was on shift between hrs 5-6pm sat jan 29 was completely unacceptable. My kids and I waited for over 30mins standing in a very long line they even asked how many in our group and we remained in line expecting to be seated . There were* NO SIGNS *outside of the building while waiting until you reach the entrance they have sings that were located in a poor view on how it is now mandatory to show your vaccination information in order to be seated. When it came to our turn they once again asked how many and then he processed to ask for proof of vaccinations and even repeated in Spanish as if we didn't understand what he was saying when were fluent in the English I began to ask the employee if we could take out he was busy attending the people behind us and in a rude manner just pointed to signs they had in this dirty hallway didn't even bother answering me back as if I'm not up to his standards to reply and thats when he just snatched a sign off the wall taped it outside which should of been done to begin with and walked away What a complete waste of time luckily I was able to scan the qr code but I was discouraged by then I just asked my husband to get take out within less then 15min the order was ready have we known we were going to get treated the way we did we would of never set foot at this establishment and waited as much as we did I still gave them business $60 worth not much but the money your getting from paying costumers should be respected unfortunately we will definitely not be stopping by there are other great thai food restaurant around LA area who know how to properly run a business and provide great costumer service and treat people fairly from all walks of life as a business...
Read moreThere was a line in the front and back of the restaurant so I figured it was really good (went for my finances moms bday) and we waited and talked. We got seated right away when we got to the front of the line. It was PACKED so I understand that food quality and service won't be as good as normal but it doesn't excuse the poor quality meat flavors and service experienced. I'm not a seafood person so I had rice and orange chicken and that alone was worse than panda expresses (I'm being flat honest right now) the rice was undercooked and dry so I was like okay maybe it's like that because you eat it with the soup but I don't like the soup so I ate it alone (also I hadn't eaten all day so my taste buds were very sensitive). The sauce for the orange chicken was good but the chicken was little to non-existent (also only dark meat) mostly breaded tbh. The beef fried rice tasted like fish (?????) The chowmein tasted like fish (?????). I know it was a fish heavy spot but a BEEF flavored rice should NOT taste like fish. The water was little to no unfiltered tap water. Dishes were wet and made the table wet I kept wiping the table down. Chowmein looked paler than ramen noodle packets. (Also looked like a packet of noodles). Like I get it's busy but not only was the food very low quality for a 30 min wait in line but ALSO the service forgetting our drinks (we had finished our food before we got our teas) and then they billed us incorrectly and we had to reach out numerous times to remind them that we haven't received something. It was a 6 person table. We had 3 minutes to decide on what we wanted to drink for food and the menus were gone. Took about 10 minutes for the food and 20 for the drinks (not including the tap water). I am usually very understanding but this was worse than the burger king I got food...
