The quality of the food here is amazing. Not only do they have regular beef, but they also have imported Kobe/Miyazaki beef from Japan. Plus, this is the only Shabu-Shabu restaurant in LA that actually serves daily-fresh seafood as part of the menu, which includes king crab legs, oysters, and clams.
The menu for every item is served as a course meal, so you don't just get the Shabu-Shabu. You get 3 delicate, artfully prepared and authentic Japanese appetizers that could have come straight out of a Kyoto kaiseki dinner. Seriously! Then you get the main course: the shabu beef/seafood with a HUGE plate of vegetables (consisting of three tofu slices, greens, glass noodles, and cabbages).
After that, the chef gives you a choice of udon or rice to cook in your remaining broth water as a post-wheat dish. Pick the udon! Then you get a dessert, which is pretty sweet as well.
The appetizers/desserts change by time and season, so you never get the same stuff upon different visits. You'll be here for an hour trying to get through the whole dinner, but it's definitely worth the experience and money.
The only minor quibble I have is that I think the yellow sesame sauce at Shabu Shabu House tastes better than the one here. But everything else at...
Read moreHave known of this place for quite a while, but only recently stopped by. The experience I had here was really good! The menu itself is designed to be a set menu, with courses coming out as your table finishes. Each course came out quickly and the service in between was amazing. My tea/water was almost always topped off without me asking and just overall very attentive to our tables needs.
So you must be wondering why the 4/5 * (I'd want to do 4.5 if I could).. Unfortunately it's because I found the soup (just water?) used for the shabu had almost no flavor. This became more apparent after we cooked everything in it, and the broth essentially still just tasted like water. This affected part of the course, when they create either a rice porridge or udon soup (udon soup ended up being better). Both came out with minimal flavor and the ponzu was the saving grace of this second to last part.
Overall, I think this place is great from top to bottom (especially the apple pie) and I don't mind having a light flavored meal, but I just felt for the price point there could at least be some more to the broth. I don't know maybe I'm just uncouth with how it's supposed to be. I'd def still give this place a try if you...
Read moreI recently dined at Tensho with my husband, anticipating a delightful culinary experience. Unfortunately, our visit turned out to be quite alarming.
We ordered the fresh crab set for my husband and the beef set for myself. While the presentation of the dishes was impressive, the quality of the seafood was concerning. Within three hours of our dinner, my husband experienced severe diarrhea, which persisted throughout the night. We strongly suspect the raw oyster from the seafood set was the culprit, as I did not consume any raw items and remained unaffected.
This incident has left us deeply disheartened and wary of dining at Tensho again. Food safety should be a paramount concern for any restaurant, especially one that specializes in fine dining. I hope the management takes this feedback seriously and ensures that such issues are addressed to prevent future...
