This Legendary Los Angeles Theater Will Officially Reopen In 2026 — The DTLA Staple Returns As A Nightclub

The Mayan has always been a standout venue, and attending one of its final events was nothing short of unforgettable. The energy in the building was electric, with every corner buzzing with nostalgia and excitement. From the moment we arrived, it was clear this wasn’t just another night out—it was a celebration of all the years The Mayan has brought people together through music, art, and community. The production was top-notch, with incredible sound, lighting, and performances that truly honored the venue’s legacy. Every detail felt intentional, a fitting tribute to a space that has meant so much to so many. Whether you were on the dance floor, taking in the visuals, or just soaking up the atmosphere, there was a sense that we were all part of something special—one last, unforgettable chapter in The Mayan’s story. We left with full hearts and the kind of memories that will stay with us for a lifetime. While it’s bittersweet to say goodbye, we’re grateful to have experienced one of the final events in such an iconic space. The Mayan didn’t just host events—it created moments, and we’ll hold onto ours forever.

Nice sized music venue with nice Mayan / tribal decorations. I wouldn’t describe it as a “night club” definitely more of a theater. Sound was good. Management here sucks, as evident by the fact that there is no water fill stations and a little bottle of Costco water is $7. Total cash grab, and unethical. Drinks are super pricey. Despite the fact that the show was 21+, for some reason drinks were not allowed on the floor (either have to drink in the very back of the venue or up top on the balcony), something we learned after buying our drinks. Bathroom was small and cramped, so always had a long line, and looked like just one bathroom for the whole venue, with 3 barrier-less urinals. Huge improvement would be to add a water fill station on both floors (can even offer the crappy paper cone cups, people would still buy the water bottles), and let people drink on the floor for 21+ shows.

2024: saturday is the day to go. Music on all floors inconsistent & the same but decent. I got in free at 930. Picks up at like 11. Packed by 1130, well mainly the middle floor. crowd decent. Girl boy ratio ok for los angeles that is, ive seen worse lol. I actually had fun. Los angeles ppl are awkward & weird af bro lol. They just stare at u & sometimes smile LOL. All three floors open. Dress code church clothes but i saw ppl wearing anything, prolly paid extra money. They dont start playing good music till 11 as well which is dumb af! Djs not engaged with crowd, crowd rarely singing. Was lit till the end. Last 30 mins music was weak so i left. Going to club 54 nxt weeknd for better music. Not a balance of genres. Too much banda & merengue. lil salsa , good bachata no pop lil hiphop more edm not enuff cool recent reggaeton too much playing whole song lol. That was the music for the night. Rate 4.4. WHY DONT LA CLUBS PLAY TOP40 🤦‍♂️ keep the music fresh bro.

2023: music was really good surprisingly it was recent music. This place has died down a lot. They dont even open the basement anymore LOL. Def dead on friday. 15 to get in at 930pm. Fun fact: there r more men on the west coast women vs the east coast. Dancing areas getting smaller. Same dj since 2016. Bro played the weeknd lfg. Rate 3.7

2020: ok this place was lit. Everyone was dancing and engaged. Music was actually decent but it started getting lame around 12. Played some newer top40 doja cat but still a lot of the same ol rotation. Rate 4.475. Wasnt too crowded. Came at 1015 and paid $20. Still the same dj. Saw one guy couldnt get in bc he didnt have a collard shirt. The seat area was closed. Part of the main floor is now a payed table area. They should really try something new with the music and stuff, could be better. I was danced out and the music was getting weak so I left at like 1235. I also saw people wearing whatever as well, they probably payed extra money is my guess. Age is mixed which i love. This place is pretty mature though. Club was very weak in the beginning. Towards 11 it picked up.

2018: I rate a 3.7. Its 3 floors. Went on a saturday. $10 before 1030. For the basement hiphop floor its the Same dj and 90% the same rotation every Saturday for the past two yrs. website is informal and easy to navigate. The main floor is usually all kinds of spanish and some mostly edm a hint of techno and house maybe. The other floor is usually reggaeton bachata spanish rock banda merengue etc... crowd is mixed and 21+. Church clothes! Coat check available. Plenty of seats and stairs haha.

LA clubs fyi: pick up 11ish. they all are hit or miss. Takes a while for people to loosen up. Crowd is usually stiff. People start leaving and gets jaded around 2am. Haha. And the music is...

We had the worst experience ever with security. I was at the Grupo Niche concert with 3 of my friends Thursday 3/10/16. We were standing by the bar one of my friends was tipsy she said she was feeling sick so I asked the bartender if she had a trash can or something that my friend can throw up in. She handed me a bin. My friend ended up not throwing up then two securities show up and say she's tipsy you guys need to move away from the bar. So we start heading out. As we were walking we were walking we find about 4 security guys who then put their hands on my friend. Her husband said we are leaving why are grabbing her like that and grabbed one of the security guards that had her and said let her go don't grab her like that we are leaving. The security then turned to him pushed him and grab him by the neck and all you see is like 5 to 7 security personnel on top of him on the floor. They proceed to take him towards the door so we follow. They did not put him out the door instead they put him in this room next to the exit that looked like a bathroom and hit him and hold him for a good 5 to 10 minutes. As I saw this I started recording. Two security a male and female cover my phone and say you can't record in here this is private property. I told them you're not cops you cannot detain my friend, you can kick him out but you can't hold him. The female security then puts her hands on me and tries to grab my phone I step back and tell her not to touch me I was sober and if she touched me again I would hit her. I also told her not to touch my phone. Then they told me to get out so since they kept my friend inside I proceeded to call the police. They didn't let him go until they saw the police. This was my first time at Mayan Theate. The worst experience ever I will never go back or recommend to any of my friends. The owner should watch what kind of security he hires. I understand some people at bars get drunk and rowdy but that was not our case they told us you need to take her away from the bar so we were walking and then we were attacked by security. That was really...

My favorite special event venue in L. A. The Mayan is decorated like a Mayan Temple and while that may sound a bit weird, it actually works in a dark dance club environment. The dance floor is quite large and they also have a large stage. This is a tri-level club and there are many rooms to discover. If the event you attend here is allowing people to walk around to the back end of the stage, check out the large room that is situated under the stage. Most of the bathrooms are located up in the front of the club but they do have some smaller bathrooms scattered about. The room under the stage has a bathroom off of it that most people don't know about so there is rarely a line for it. They also have a very large bar area near the front of the club as well. It is a very large bar and it usually has many bartenders working it so the lines here are pretty short. There is a smaller side bar at the left hand side of the stage but it usually has only one or two bartenders and you will wait longer to get to the bar here. It is a daunting task to make your way across that large dance floor when it is crowded but if you can navigate your way through, the front bars are a better choice. The Mayan is in an old converted theater and it has a very large balcony with plenty of lounging around space. The balcony is also situated high above the dance floor and is worth a visit just to look down at the dance floor during peak hours. If the fog machines have being used, the excess fog will be floating like clouds over the heads of the people on the dance floor but below the balcony. It looks like the club has its own weather inside the club and the people dancing look like they are way down below you (because they are). The balcony is really that high up and it is an impressive sight looking down. This is a fun venue and I always have a...
