I am writing this review about one man and one man alone who works here bc I think he’s the most annoying person I’ve met in my entire life
He’s a white man w a patchy beard and the demeanor of a comic book villain
So it took me an hour to metro here for a concert by my FAVORITE ARTIST. I am a visual artist and had been working before using my iPad.
Lo, I arrived at Ace and an hour early (this was my favorite artist after all) and was ready to go in with my friend. We had been waiting in line forever.
“Patchy beard” enters. He was security, possibly hired out. He investigated my bag and all was good. He investigated my keys and all was good. And then was preparing to let me through than saw that I had an iPad. He said that I wasn’t allowed to bring my iPad inside. Ok fine. I’m sure they have a good reason for that rule I do not understand.
Then he said “you need to go put it back” ….. put it back sir???? “In your car” he said 🤠 oh I said. I clearly could not do that and still attend the concert. That would take at least two hours and I’d miss the better part of the set.
But I would not give up. This was my favorite artist after all.
So I called my girlfriend. She knows how important this concert is to me. incredibly, she LEFT HER JOB to drive 40 minutes to come pick my iPad up. I am eternally grateful.
I sat on the curb outside Ace for an hour. Finally, ipad has been picked up by perfect girlfriend. She departs. I return to the line.
I was greeted by a very friendly checking in girl. She was super helpful and sweet. She passed me along to…… who else but ……Patchy Beard Man
The man, as patchy as ever, looks painstakingly at every item in my purse for the second time. I’m so sure I’m clear. He’s already done this once before. I’m full of joy. The music is about to start within 2 minutes.
And then, because he’s patchy beard man, right when he’s about to let me through he says “you can’t bring that pepper spray in.”
I am confused. “why didn’t you tell me this last time you saw it? An hour ago? 🤠” I asked. He shrugged. “You can’t bring that in.” I blinked and immediately tossed the pepper spray (bran new) in the trash can. He looks me dead in the eye and says “good choice.”
The rage I felt in that moment was so intense and inexplicable all I could do was walk away. It is a rage I have felt few times in my life.
So here I am writing this review, exclusively for the hope that someone even vaguely affiliated with the hotel one day might see it and say “oh yes, I might know who the patchy bear man is. We hired him for security. He is indeed quite diligent and thorough at his job. One of our best security workers. And yet, he is also one of the most annoying people I’ve ever very known.”
And that is all I...
Read moreWe went to the Ace Theater last night to see Neil Gaiman and the theater's lobby was unbelievably loud and disruptive during the majority of the performance.
Ace upper management needs to be made aware that there are major noise issues created by their bar/lobby/security staff that talent and patrons can hear in the theater during a show.
They clearly didn't have a manager present. And if there was one, they need to be replaced.
Immediately after Gaiman came on stage, it sounded like the lobby was under major construction. Nonstop banging, moving of large objects and dragging ensued well into the performance. There aren't doors leading between the lobby and theater, only curtains, which allows every sound in the lobby to creep into the theater. The noise was so loud a friend seated in the third row from the stage, and another friend seated in the balcony could hear it (they complained after the show). I was unfortunately in row AA which is close to an entry, and it made it impossible to enjoy the first readings. Mid performance a woman started shouting excessively in the lobby and didn't stop. It gave Gaiman pause! The whole theater turned to look at the lobby. Theater management didn't stop her. Seriously? My friend got up to see what was going on, and he said that the bar had closed down completely and that's where he thought the noise was coming from. He thought the shouting woman might have been staff. It seemed that the staff/bar didn't want to stick around any longer than they had to, and did NOT care how loud they were closing down shop. We could hear bartenders throwing glass loudly in the bins and then we could also hear them drag the bin filled with glass recycling out to the trash from where we sat. This is totally disrespectful to the artist and every patron. It really took away from the show for us and I'm very disappointed. That's how the Ace treats a world renowned author and sold out performance?
The email we received prior to the performance stated that the Ace was checking vaccination cards, but there was no check point. No one asked for my vaccination card.
Doors were supposed to be open at 7p but at 730p there was still a line around the block.
There are very clear management and operational issues at the theater.
I've never had a bad experience at the Ace Theater before but I won't be going back any time soon. The place felt like a free-for-all. This is clearly an existing issue that has not been addressed bc there was at least one other recent Yelp complaint that was similar. Someone needs to be present to manage the bar and general noise level of the lobby.
My friends and I expected more from...
Read moreBeware the Theater at Ace Hotel… Saw Jerry Lee Lewis there a couple weeks back, several members and pockets of the crowd were extremely drunk and belligerent. As regular rock n roll concert goers, this normally wouldn’t faze us at all, but this crowd was crossing the line regularly, particularly the group right next to us. They were so out of control, we actually complained to management (which we have never done at any gig in our lives…) and asked to be seated elsewhere, pretty much ANYWHERE elsewhere would do, as long as we could get a reasonable distance away from this really obnoxious group.
So they changed our seats, putting us directly BEHIND this group, as opposed to being seated right NEXT to them. Really? What part of “we are specifically trying to get away from this one cluster of drunken idiots before a brawl breaks out” was misunderstood? Clearly, little logical thought or consideration was given to this issue by the House Manager, despite telling her our prior seat locations multiple times. After 3 songs, we left, as they were just too out of control. I expect it when I’m in a mosh pit, but not here.
Complained again to the so-called management on the way out and gave her my contact information, she promised someone would contact me in the coming week to discuss, never heard from them, and that was almost a month ago. Going to their website provides no legitimate contact info or any way to pursue with a human being, in typical corporate fashion.
Bottom line; once they have your money, the Theater at Ace Hotel does not care about crowd safety or control, beyond lip service. If you do have an issue that requires their help, yer outta luck and there’s no...
