Hidden Gem Alert! The Service Station - Don't Let the Name Fool You! We were passing through town and looking for a place to grab a bite. The name "The Service Station" didn't exactly scream "delicious food," but boy, were we wrong! This place was a fantastic surprise and deserves to be way higher on everyone's must-try list. First off, the cleanliness is clearly a priority. Seeing a health score of either 96 or 98 immediately put us at ease. But beyond that, the food was simply outstanding. Our group decided to sample a little bit of everything, and honestly, there wasn't a single dish that disappointed. The onion rings were crispy and perfectly seasoned, the Station Burger was juicy and flavorful, and the shrimp and grits were creamy and comforting. Even the egg rolls were a delightful surprise! I opted for the half chicken plate, and the chicken was cooked perfectly – moist and tender. And let's not forget the sides! Every single one we tried was delicious and clearly made with care. Honestly, it's a 10/10 for the food and overall experience. The service was also fantastic – friendly, attentive, and efficient. Plus, the prices were great, and the portions were more than generous. The only thing that might give some people pause is the bathroom situation. Being an old service station, the restrooms are portable potties located outside. However, considering the unique charm and many original features of the building that they've preserved, this felt like a minor quirk rather than a dealbreaker. I really want to like this place but I fear it's too inconsistent. You dont know what experience you'll get. Sometimes its pretty decent but sometimes its straight up bad...like today. Seems like they are always out of something. Today they were put of collard greens. Last time it was fried green tomatoes...and RIBS(good flavor but super fatty instead of meaty)! The first time I had the wings and half smoked chicken it was pretty dang good. Today it was awful. So dried and shriveled from being in the smoker too long that I could barely choke it down. The baked beans I got, since they didn't have greens, tasted like they came out of a can rather than the nice smokey, brown sugar/molassesy it tasted like before. The cornbread was so dry I could barely choke it down. Despite not many people in there at all I had to get up and go search for water to drink. There were some other service things but she was probably new so whatever. The real disappointment today was the food. I live right next to the place so I was excited after the first couple times I was there but these last few times have left a lasting impression on me and unfortunately I dont know if I'll be back or recommend it like I did after my first couple trips. Perfect example of never judge a book by its cover! You can get over the remodeling look of the dining area, you are in for a REAL TREAT! 1st.. It is seat yourself. The waitress will be around. She was incredibly friendly and very personable. We started with cans of Coke and cups of ice. Then we got the Philly cheese steak egg rolls...BLEW OUR MINDS GOOD! Not spicy but super flavor packed! We then shared the BBQ platter and opted for Mac n cheese and mashed potatoes for the sides....MIND BLOWN AGAIN! The ribs were perfectly sauced with sweet and tangy and fell off the bone and melted in your mouth. The pulled pork was cooked to perfection with a smoky flavor that hit the taste buds just right. The chicken was smoked and glazed with the same tangy and sweet sauce and roasted to absolute deliciousness. Now, the potatoes were mashed and had some of the boiled skins in and were southern comfort at ita best BUT the real flavor-gasmic...the real winner here was the mac n cheese!
