Understand this was during the 'soft' opening and training was taking place. This visit was during lunch on a sunday, dine in service 4 top.
Servers: Kind, informative, and pleasant. There were too few of them for the amount of tables and each of them seemed to be over-burdened. This is on the management and corporate office to adequately staff the location. For dine-in service it took way too long to get refills on drinks. Our server did not come to check in on our table after taking our order, except one time toward the end of our meal, again not on her - that is up to mgmt to fix staffing. Runners delivered the food and were also pleasant and helped correct a drink order mixup.
The food took about 20min to arrive at the table after ordering promptly upon arrival. For such a simple menu this is about 10min longer than I would expect, even considering the # of patrons there. Food was plated extremely well. Food is served on picnic style paper plates with 3 areas. Sides were mounded up to the edge but not overflowing. Chicken was served on a piece of slightly dry white 'wonder' bread. Chicken portions were as expected for this economy and not huge but not quail-sized (looking at you Joella's). The kids chicken tenders were enormous and massive for a kids size (fine by me).
Interior atmostphere was lively and a bit on the loud side. They'd benefit from a few noise dampening sound panels on the cieling. Small detail for me but they has a few of the tables intended for 2 tops, that were arranged for 4 people, leaving very little table space for 4 folks.
Bathrooms: They were spotless for having a packed house. A++ on this. This is not small feat.
The food itself: I've only had Gus's this one time. Each piece of chicken on each person's plate was slightly dry (even the thigh meat) and had an overcooked coating. The coating was odd to what I'd expect for fried chicked, more for 'fish and chips' type of batter. The batter had little to no flavor. The chicken meat itself while slightly dry was tasty. It was clearly fresh and hot though so that is a plus.
The sides were really good. We had a spread with baked beans, potato salad, mac'n'cheese, and fries. Only the fries were a little dry and clearly from a mass production frozen bag. The baked beans were tasty but I would not be surprised if they were also not made in-house. Mac n cheese was just okay and had sprinkled unmelted cheddar on top, it was not baked as most chicken joints do.
The fried green tomatoes were the best iver iver had anywhere!
The ranch seemed not-homemade as I would expect at a smallish chicken chain. It was sub-par. Honey mustard was much better.
Lemonade as very good. Iced tea (sweet and unsweet) were both very good.
We got pecan and coconut pie. The pecan pie is among the best I've had anywhere in the south and certainly the best for being at the for northern part of this southern US. Coconut pie is just okay, not too strong of a coconut flavor but the crust (same in the pecan) is what elevates the average filling.
Overall, I will not be going back with my family. I will give them another shot solo in a few months when they have more reps under the belt. We did have chicken left over and it was not worth taking home to eat since it just wasn't that good. I expect soooooo much better from the legendary Gus's. I expect more from a fried chicken joint in Kentucky. Maybe this was due to training...
Read moreWe've driven by Gus's a lot and were not really sure what is what about. Don't let the view from Hurstbourne Lane fool you. It is a nice, cozy big atmosphere inside, with plenty of tables to sit and eat. Very friendly vibe and relaxing! Our server was Monique P. and she was attentive, friendly and helpful with her explanations to us about the food. The chicken is wonderful! The bone-in chicken is prepared fresh to order (be patient while they cook it). It has a crispy crust to it (not breaded like KFC) and the inside was hot and moist. Monique told us the "spiciness" level of the bone-in chicken is about a 4 out of 10. I agree as I don't really like super spicy food. It has a nice flavor with a small kick. They use a cayenne pepper on the bone-in chicken. It is tasty and does have a small kick to it. My wife doesn't do spicy, so she got one generous sized chicken tender. It has a spiciness rating of 1 out of 10. They use a different spice for it, but I've forgotten the name. Nice flavor and we could have easily shared a three-piece tender meal and been full. The standard sides with plate meals are baked beans and cole slaw. You can get other sides if you wish for a 50-cent upcharge. The baked beans are warm and made with pork in them. Very tasty! The cole slaw was moist and on the sweeter side of life. My wife had the greens (also with pork in them) and potato salad. She asked for some vinegar which they brought to her (only hot sauce is on the tables, nothing else). She loved them but suggests you ask for salt to put in the potato salad as it is made without salt. For dessert we shared a piece of chocolate chess pie. It was smooth, tasty and on the smaller side for one piece. It is not big enough to share, so get your own! There is an option to add ice-cream, and they also have floats available. Lastly the Assistant General Manager, Donald Miller, stopped by to see how we enjoyed everything. We had a nice chat and told him how much we loved our first visit there. He told us they plan to add a catfish sandwich and a chicken sandwich to the menu soon. We definitely...
Read moreThis was my second trip to Gus's, and it won't be my last. In fact, I was sincerely tempted to say to the very sweet and attentive waitress Jennifer, "As God is my witness, I'll never eat at Raising Cane's, Zaxby's, or Chick-fil-A again!" But my kids were with me and they don't like it when I act up. As much as I liked those three places previously, though, they simply cannot compare to Gus's. For one thing, the amount of food that you get at Gus's is amazing. For $12.50 I got the Tender Special, which included 5 gigantic pieces of chicken (seriously, you couldn't have even fit one of them into that box you get for tenders at Chick-fil-A), a healthy portion of very tasty coleslaw, a healthy portion of lovely baked beans, and a slice of bread. It was more food than I could eat. They have other sides you can substitute in for 50 cents extra: macaroni and cheese, seasoned fries, green beans and other stuff. I recommend a serving of corn nuggets as well...lovely little fritters. Word is that the bone-in chicken is a bit hotter...and you don't get nearly as much chicken as you get with the tenders (see picture), so I'd stick with the tenders unless you roll hot and slim. And those tenders...I have never tasted chicken like this before. It was so good that I had to make myself stop eating lest I explode. I just had water to drink, but there's lots of other stuff: soft drinks and many varieties of beer. There's also some fine looking desert, but I couldn't even think about that. Seriously, that plate I got could have fed two people...and then you'd even have room for dessert. A most excellent repast!
P.S. I just made my 3rd trip to Gus's, and should note that the Tender Special I described was no longer on the menu. The regular price for the 4 Tenders (+ sides) is $16.00, which is still an excellent price for a great...
