Hip Hop Fish & Chicken — Restaurant in Maryland

It was easy enough to setup an account and place an order online, I’m disappointed in the DoorDash Storefront as I expect more from a business with their resources.

The staff was nice, and pickup was simple and straight forward, seating is rather worn and the counter hails back to the height of COVID and isn’t overly inviting.

HipHop’s FAQ says they sprinkle all their food with a “special blend of lemon pepper seasoning”, I’ve never known lemon pepper to feel gritty, or taste like salt if either lemon or pepper were present, they were entirely masked. We could taste neither lemon nor pepper, only an over abundance of salt. The pickles, chicken, eggplant, and clam strips were so heavily salted that they were all inedible.

The corn nuggets were mildly sweet, somewhat firm with whole kernels and a pleasant salt free corn taste. The sweet potatoes were also a good choice, they were mashed and not whipped. I’d have preferred a bit more brown sugar and for them to be warm; however, that’s getting picky. The breading on the eggplant and pickles was too heavy, overpowering the texture of the fruit.

The chicken legs might have been decent, the flavor completely overwhelmed and it was difficult to get past. The only complaint about the cole slaw is the portion size, it was more a small condiment than a side dish, too little of a good thing.

The salt on the clam strips was so heavy that they felt gritty leaving residue on my fingers, I threw the bulk of them out as they were simply inedible.

None of the fried food was edible and most of it was tossed into the bin, we don’t plan to ever return. No amount of reasonable pricing makes up for HipHop’s taking what could have been well prepared food and rendering...

Unfortunately, I had to leave one star to leave a review, otherwise I would have left no stars. This restaurant has the worst fried chicken I've ever eaten. It tasted like it had been fried twice, heavy with grease, and the meat completely over cooked. The meat actually looked like it had "exploded". Our green beans came as macaroni and cheese instead. The mac and cheese was simply cooked macaroni with blobs of some kind of "cheese" scattered throughout the dish. I ordered ( I thought) a small order of fries, but got a huge - probably close to a pint and a half - of fries. They were limp and smashed together.

I also was involuntarily relieved of $120.00 out of my fanny pack. I looked away to throw something in the trash, and it was gone. Obviously, I was stupid to look away. But it was right in front of the counter and the employees there, so that indicated to me even if it wasn't one of the employees, they saw who did it.

Hip Hop Chicken and Fish is a solid choice if you're looking for quick takeout. It's not a sit-down restaurant—more of a place where you pop in, order your food, and take it home. I’ve been to this location and others several times, and overall, the food is decent. While it’s not five-star dining, both the fried chicken and fried fish are pretty tasty.

I’ve tried a few of their sides too, and some stand out more than others. The spicy fried green beans are really good if you enjoy a little heat. Their regular green beans and greens are good, while the sweet potatoes are tasty but quite sweet. I’ve also tried their desserts. The cake slices are big but pretty standard, not homemade. The banana pudding was pretty good, though, and while the individual pies aren’t that good. They are probably purchased from a wholesaler and resold.

Overall, Hip Hop Chicken and Fish is good for what it is—a place to stop and grab some fried chicken, fish, and sides when you're craving something fast...
