Overpriced and Overhyped
Saltgrass Steak House markets itself as a classic Texas steakhouse serving premium cuts and authentic Southern charm—but the reality is far less impressive. After my recent visit, I walked away disappointed, feeling that the restaurant charges fine-dining prices for chain-restaurant quality. What used to be a reliable, mid-tier steakhouse has become an overpriced disappointment that simply doesn’t deliver the value or quality it once promised.
Let’s start with the food. The steaks—supposedly the star of the show—are shockingly mediocre for the price. My ribeye, ordered medium rare, came out unevenly cooked with more gristle than marbling. For nearly $35, it lacked both tenderness and flavor. The seasoning was bland, almost as if the kitchen was afraid of salt and spice. Other steakhouses in the same price range, like Texas Roadhouse or Outback, consistently serve juicier, better-seasoned steaks at a noticeably lower cost.
The sides aren’t much better. The baked potato was dry, the mashed potatoes tasted instant, and the green beans had the texture of canned vegetables. The salads felt like an afterthought—pale lettuce drowned in dressing. Even the appetizers, like the range rattlers and fried mushrooms, felt greasy and underseasoned. For the prices they charge, you expect fresh, flavorful food—not something that tastes mass-produced.
The service, while friendly, couldn’t make up for the food’s shortcomings. My server was polite and attentive, but even she admitted the kitchen had been “inconsistent lately.” The wait for our food was nearly 40 minutes, and when it arrived, it wasn’t even hot.
Dessert didn’t redeem the experience either. The cheesecake was dense and artificial-tasting, and the brownie sundae was little more than a scoop of ice cream melting over a dry square of chocolate cake. For what they charge, it’s almost insulting.
By the time the check arrived—nearly $100 for two people—I realized Saltgrass has priced itself out of its own league. For that amount, you could easily enjoy a superior meal at a local steakhouse or even a higher-end chain like LongHorn or Ruth’s Chris, where quality actually matches cost.
Bottom line: Saltgrass Steak House feels like a restaurant coasting on its name. The food is average at best, the prices are unjustifiable, and the overall experience is not worth what you pay. If you’re craving a great steak, skip Saltgrass—you’ll find better taste and better value almost...
Read moreSo where do I start with this one? I have been a Landrys member for over 20 years. Never have I experienced anything like the service I received today. First the bartender took our orders, well only my wife’s order and walked away. We had to call her back to take my order. Then she says “ oh I thought yall would split it. A 6oz fillet? So I ordered redfish with loaded mashed potatoes and a wedge salad. My wedge salad came out missing the dressing. When I asked for it the manager Jared brought it out and I could clearly tell that my wife and I were a problem for this guy. Seems as if he didn’t want to talk to me but wanted to lean on the chair on my wife’s side and talk quietly to her. Birthed the manager nor the bartender realized we didn’t have any silverware. We weren’t offered any bread. Now the bartender was nice. She had a broken foot or something so it seemed like it may have been a little difficult for her to move around. I noticed every time Jared came to help her he seemed to get more and more irritated. So my food came out. The redfish tasted spoiled. 15 minutes later my wife’s food comes. Then I have the opportunity to tell Jared that my food tastes bad. I asked for a 6oz. Fillet. He says it will be four minutes. I’m a chef I’m not stupid but hey he said it. 22 minutes later still no steak. My wife is done eating. I asked if it’s cooked they can put it in a Togo container. Brought me huge container with this tiny dry steak in it at full price. No sir. You can charge me for the potato it not that. I actually took it out of my box and gave it back. So it probably ended up at another table. He was a pissed and so was I. But you sir are the controller of this situation and you failed miserably. This was the most awful Salt Grass experience I’ve ever had. I still left an adequate tip. I think things just kind of happen in the restaurant world. The bartender had crap support. Jared had a REAL problem with us though. Wonder what it could have been? I was polite the whole time. Wish I could have gotten that back in return. Goodbye SaltGrass it’s been...
Read moreSince this was a to-go only shall speak about the food and service only
We had ordered the Center cut Fillet 6 oz with 2 Range Rattlers and Garlic Mashed Potatoes and cup of Potato Soup. Along with this we ordered the Cheeseburger with Fries and the grilled Salmon with steamed Broccoli and cup of Potato Soup .
First, they sealed off the to-go bag so determinedly, it seemed fishy and only on reaching home when we actually cut open the bag, we found major misses!
They missed out on including 2 items - the Range Rattlers and the cops of Potato Soup completely.
And the Garlic Mashed Potatoes had no garlic and the steam Broccoli was just served as is, not steamed.
Since they had charged $9 for the Range Rattlers that they missed including in our order , we decided to call customer service who directed us to the manager of the franchise. The first thing we were told there would be no comp-off ( even though we had not asked for it directly), we just sought options.
They asked us to come back and take the Range Rattlers, so that’s what we did. The missing cups of potato soup were never discussed or given.
Now about the food quality:
As you would see in the photos attached, overall packing was without a thought to preserve food quality or freshness of preparation.
The filet was the only item that was adequate in taste and cooked correctly ( medium rare)
The accompanying Garlic Mashed Potatoes was garlic-less and just a lump of puréed potatoes, quite bland and saltless.
The Cheeseburger patty was a stiff lump of meat not quite cooked enough after thawing the frozen puck and without much taste or flavor, while the accompanying fries were actually ok.
And the Grilled salmon had great char marks but was way over cooked to a rock hard consistency. As mentioned earlier Steamed Broccoli needed to be steamed more .
All in all, does not entice us to go in for a dine in unless above noted issued are verifiably corrected.
Overall not a value for...
