$14 for 2 small picarones should be a crime đ
If you like your Peruvian food bien taypa (Peruvian slang for A LOT/in abundance) this place is not for you.
Stopped in for Happy Hour which runs til 7 PM. The oysters were half off priced at $1.75 per. Ordered a dozen - they were good, doused in leche de tigre and ahi Amarillo. Nothing special. Just a decent entree. They offered a bowl of canchita. However It was way over salted. Made It hard to eat without having to drink water every time you took a bite.
Next ordered the Kampachi Tiradito. I kid you not - you can eat this in quite literally 2 bites. For $18 I expected way more. There was about 5 pieces of fish cut in razor thin slices which was hilarious. Dish was covered in aji y lemon but the lemon was way overpowering. I almost forgot to mention - 3 small potato crisps/chips were included on top of the dish. They tasted pretty stale though.
To drink I ordered a Maiz Negroni which is a chicha flavored pisco sour. This was the only drink NOT available at the Happy Hour price which was pretty annoying. It was good though. I thoroughly enjoyed It.
At this point I was pretty much over It and wanted to end the visit with a regular chicha morada drink & picarones. The chicha morada was lacking flavor. I donât know if It was the amount of ice they put in the cup that watered It down or something - It just wasnât sweet. The picarones were fine. Like I stated above - $14 for two picarones is a sin. May the Incan Gods have mercy on whoever priced that. The only thing (besides the price) I didnât like about the picarones was that they submerge them in the syrup and let the picarones absorb the syrup (sorta like a tres leches) instead of just drizzling the syrup on the picarones. But whatever.
Last thing - please be aware that the 20% gratuity/tip is automatically added to your bill - regardless of your party size. I missed that part in the menu. I also wish the server let me know that as he saw me tip him ANOTHER 20% on the handheld card reader. Iâll hold that L though.
I always give these âcontemporaryâ & âfancyâ Peruvian restaurants that have been popping up a lot lately a chance. And every time I come out disappointed. I think I learned my...
Read moreReally, really wanted & expected to love this place but, while some of the dishes were outstanding (helllllo Dorade!), most of the others tasted exactly the same... sour. We made plans for dinner here with another couple & it was everyone's first time here so we were all excited. We were all pretty hungry so ordered a bit of everything: OYSTERS (AJĂ AMARILLO LECHE DE TIGRE, HUACATAY) Looked beautiful but all I could tasted was super sour. I love oysters and like to taste them when I have them. The topping was totally overpowering. SCALLOP CEBICHE (GRAPES, BURNT SERRANO, CILANTRO) Again, beautiful to look at, totally sour. Delicate scallops & grapes were overpowered by the sauce. TORTITAS (SEASONAL PICKLES, HOT SAUCE) Yummy but how could fried corn dough not be? YELLOWFIN TUNA (PINTO BEANS, FINGER LIMES, CILANTRO) This was DELICIOUS! Super fresh & bright! Perfectly seasoned. KANPACHI (AJĂ DULCE, LEMON, POTATO CRISPS) Also delicious & also well seasoned. Not overpoweringly acidic. GEM LETTUCES (GOAT GOUDA, PUFFED RICE, AJĂ AMARILLO TEHINA) Back to square one... beautiful but overpoweringly salty & drenched in dressing. CHARRED CORN (CHOCLO, PARMESAN, SWEET CORN HUANCAĂNA) It was ok. I would have wanted more char & less cheese. BEETS (ROASTED PEPITAS, AJĂ LIMO SALT, CELERY) Good & adding to the salad helped cut the saltiness. BONE-IN RIBEYE + FRIES (PACHIKAY AU POIVRE) I don't eat meat but everyone loved it. DORADE (AJĂ AMARILLO BEURRE BLANC, CHIVES) Now this... THIS dish was incredible! One of the most delicious fish dishes ever! Perfectly cooked & that sauce?!? The stuff of dreams! Literally the BEST thing on the menu & reason enough to come eat here.
I've read so many great reviews & heard so many good things about this place. Maybe the chef was a bit heavy handed with the acid that night? Maybe I was extra sensitive to sour? Who knows but because the things that were good were THAT good, I will definitely be back. Great atmosphere, great vibe & good cocktails. Definitely warrants...
Read moreOur dinner at Matyâs during their collaboration with Itamae Residency was a truly memorable experienceâone that hit all the right notes, from inventive cocktails to unforgettable service and beautifully executed dishes.
We began with cocktails that immediately set the tone. My husband had the Master Pandanâa creative mix of rum and toasted popcorn that was as delicious as it was unique. I went for a spicy margarita with nordello peppers and absolutely loved it. Just the right balance of heat and citrusy brightness.
To start, we shared nigiris and a ceviche clĂĄsico, both incredibly fresh and vibrant. We then moved on to a variety of recommended dishes that made for a well-rounded and exciting meal. The standout for me was the Pulpo al Olivoâperfectly cooked octopus with a rich, addictive sauce that Iâm still dreaming about. Other favorites included the bluefin tuna tiradito, a refreshing salad with sesame dressing, and a crisp, flavorful snapper katsu. Though we were comfortably full, we wanted the full experienceâand ended with the smoked plantain and sweet potato dessert. We rarely order dessert, but this was absolutely worth it. A beautiful balance of sweet, smoky, and creamy that ended the meal on a high note.
But what truly set this experience apart was the service. Our waitress, Nai, was incredibly well-trained, attentive, and genuinely engaged throughout our visit. Every staff member who delivered a dish made a point to connect with usâeven if brieflyâand it made the entire evening feel warm and intentional.
Both my husband and I work in restaurants ourselves, so we always appreciate good service when we see itâand this was above and beyond. Combined with stunning food and a welcoming vibe, Matyâs and Itamae Residency delivered a night we wonât forget.
Highly, highly...
