Today, The Slice Mob had the absolute honor of lunching at Sicily Coal Fired Pizza. We’re a group of lifelong friends whose bond goes back 50+ years. Every month, we gather to share memories, laughter, and—of course—amazing pizza. I’m beyond blessed to have these friends in my life. Sicily is a cool spot located right on Main Street in Middletown, with the bonus of super-convenient parking by their rear entrance. No need to drive in circles scouting for a spot—huge win. We arrived as they opened, with a few early birds already enjoying their food and drinks. By the time we left, the place was hopping—almost like Times Square on New Year’s Eve, but with way better pizza (sorry, NY) 😂. Nine of us strolled in unannounced and were immediately greeted by a friendly host who quickly got us set up. Our waitress, Dana, was incredibly patient and didn’t miss a beat, even as we took our time deciding on our pizzas. We ordered a variety of pies, and while I couldn’t physically try them all—believe me, I wanted to—everyone raved about their choices. It’s safe to say we made the right call coming here. As for me? Of course, I ordered two pizzas. Why wouldn’t I? First up was the New Haven—a thin crust with red sauce and Parmigiano Reggiano. It was cooked perfectly, with just the right amount of smoky char. The sauce? Perfection. Not too sweet, not too acidic—just balanced in every way. I always judge a pizzeria by their most basic pizza, and this slice passed with flying colors. With one slice down, it was time to move on to round two. Choosing my second pizza was tough. Two options caught my eye: the Broccoli Rabe and the Spicy Sicilian. Since I can be a little spicy myself—and my family hails from Sicily—the choice was obvious. The Spicy Sicilian did not disappoint. Thin crust, perfectly charred, with an incredible sauce as the foundation. Topped with mozzarella, salami, cherry peppers, and a drizzle of agave, this pizza was a masterpiece. Thankfully, the pizzaiolo had a light hand with the agave, striking the perfect balance between spicy and sweet. Too much could have ruined it, but instead, it was absolute bliss. There were plenty of other tempting items on the menu, so a return trip is definitely in order—I’ve got my work cut out for me. All in all, it was another fantastic lunch. The pizza was perfect, the service was stellar, and the memories shared with lifelong friends? Priceless.

A review of Sicily Coal Fired Pizza in Middletown Ct.. This was my first visit to this establishment for apps, pizza, and drinks. For apps let’s start with the wild caught shrimp and polenta. The shrimp are beer battered, the polenta tasty, the corn emulsion I could’ve lived without, and a bit more chili oil would’ve added a heat element the dish needed. Brown sugar glazed Berkshire pork belly was good but it didn’t need polenta on the plate in my opinion. Polpetti was a homerun, meatball was falling apart when dug into, you could taste the braised meat in the Sunday sauce and the whipped ricotta was a creamy compliment to the dish. They were out of eggplant fries so I opted for the eggplant stack. Two pieces of thin breaded eggplant, basil leaf, fresh mozzarella, flavorless tomatoes, and a sparse drizzle of balsamic reduction. On to the pizzas. First up is a Sicilian pie with all mozzarella and half sausage. I grew up on DePasquale Sicilian pie in the Southend of Htfd. as well as my great grandmother’s pizza back in the 60’s and 70’s. Pizza sauce was good as was the mozzarella, sausage was good too. The dough was too well done on the bottom for me and had a bit of an unpleasant aftertaste. It tasted of whatever they used as pan release/ oil before setting the dough in. The thin crust pizzas were good, nice cook on the bottom, good sauce and cheese. We shared a chicken cutlet pie, chicken being a little dry, and a salami, jalapeño, agave with my only criticism being I would have roasted fresh jalapeños for it. The server was attentive, maybe a little too much, coming back every couple minutes to ask if we were ready to order. The floor managers also stopped by to ask how everything was. Overall it was an okay experience. I can’t believe how Main St Middletown has gentrified over the years. There are lots of eateries to try! I actually give Sicily 3.5 stars since there is no half star option above.

Allergen folks use caution here. We had a large group dinner to celebrate a birthday for a gluten free guest. Many of us had dined here before and knew there are many GF options on the menu. We had high hopes for Sicily. Sadly, it was a real disappointment. A few forkfuls into her meal, the gluten free plate of penne had several pieces of regular spaghetti in it. When we asked the waitress about this rouge pasta she wordlessly whisked the plate away from our table. The manager eventually came over and offered no explanation but said a new meal would be right out. We all felt uneasy eating our meals while the guest of honor waited and waited with nothing to eat and anxiety about the kitchen's ability to prepare non contaminated pasta. As all of us were done eating and had boxed up leftovers, finally her meal arrived. It was not handled well at all. While mistakes happen in a kitchen, management usually smooths it over with a complimentary drink or appetizer while a new meal is made, or the mixed up meal is removed from the bill. Sicily did not offer anything at all. In a thoughtless move, we were even charged an additional $8 up charge for the GF pasta. This mistake aside, none of us were impressed by our meals and felt the overall service and food quality has fallen off from previous experiences here. Oily sauces on the pasta and overwhelmed staff. Middletown has so many excellent options, to charge these prices a place needs to be solid on food quality and service. While there are gorgeous details to the atmosphere, an impressive bar area, and fancy cocktails, it does not make up for the overpriced $30 or more pasta dinners and unapologetic kitchen mistakes that mess with people's health.

I dined at Sicily Cold Fired Pizza on 05/25/24 and was serviced by Keith. Today (06/01/24), my credit card transaction posted and I was charge more for the tip than I wrote on the receipt. The difference was not an amount that you would have thought was a type-o so I called and spoke with the manager. The manager said that he trusted Keith and that it must have been a mistake and then hung-up on me. The food and atmosphere was great, but the service was lacking and the managers response to my call was unprofessional. So be careful and double check your receipt if you choose to dine at Sicily Coal Fired Pizza. 06/02/24 Update: The manager called me back shortly after I posted this review. After discussing the matter, it was discovered that I took the merchant copy and left a blank customer receipt copy on the table which the server used to write their own tip. So technically, I left a blank check on the table which was my fault. Due to the service I received, I left a tip that was .36 cent shy of 18% which was lower than my usual 30%. Completing a blank credit card receipt is attempted theft regardless of the amount I intended to leave. if you read the managers reply to my review, you will hear the sarcasm in their words and realize the level of professionalism at Sicily Cold Fired Pizza. 06/03/24 Update: I wouldn't go to this much trouble unless I was truly concerned for the next customer based on your response. Sal told me that the customer copy of the receipt left on the table didn't have a signature and yes, I posted this before Sal called me back. Why would I sign 2 receipts? Anyways, here is a copy of my receipt to prove that my accusation holds merit. What do I have to gain?

*edit 12/2/23: This place has really gone down hill over the last few visits. The food is lacking, feels like it's being rushed out of the kitchen, and isn't nearly as good as when they first opened. The service has been super slow and less attentive on several occasions, perhaps they're understaffed. It took almost an hour to receive 2 dishes and a salad the other night. Didn't get offered/refilled on water, but the waitress had no problem pushing alcohol. Seemed like staff were all on edge and overwhelmed. Food was disappointing and not worth the wait. This place isn't cheap either. I had no problem paying for a great meal, which Sicily used to provide. Can't say the same anymore unfortunately..I'm not sure if I'd return. Original Review: Had a nice visit here with several people. The menu is pretty large and offers many unique ingredients. The pasta dishes feature homemade pasta and large portions. Although we didn't get the pizza, it looked really good and very "new haven-ish". The service was great and very friendly. The burger was just fair, so I'd skip that. The appetizers were decent. I thought the calamari was a bit chewy, but had really nice flavor. The whipped ricotta with strawberry puree and honey was out of this world delicious. The penne a la vodka with grilled chicken was very tasty and the pasta was cooked perfect. The broccoli rabe and sausage pasta dish was flavorful. The eggplant parm was massive. The drinks and craft cocktails were nicely made and priced fair. Overall, everyone left pleased and would hope to return again soon!

I am very shocked/sad to leave this review. I came to Sicily last year a couple times and it was pretty good. This year, unfortunately, it was not a great experience. I came with a party of 4 at 6:15 and we were seated with no wait time. We ordered the seasonal sangrias and they were not good at all. After that we ordered espresso martinis that were watered down and also not very good. We ordered the Cacio E Pepe arancini balls which tasted like fried garlic and pepper. After about an 1.5 hours of waiting for our food, it arrived! I ordered a $75 ribeye which was not with it. The carrot puree was very very salty and there was a compote butter on top of my steak that was basically frozen and it made me sick. I went to the bathroom immediately after feeling queasy and had to vomit. We also ordered a Gluten free pizza that was lukewarm, Gluten free carbonara that was just 99% butter and a Caesar salad with chicken. The salad was the best thing that was ordered besides it being $26. After all, we will no longer be going to Sicily due to the service taking too long (tables of 6 that sat down after us ate, drank, and left before us), the prices being outrageous, and it also just being so incredibly cold where we were seated downstairs. We were very disappointed in our 2 hour experience as we have been looking forward to this dinner all week!
