Rare should change their name to Cold.
Overall not a great experience for the $400 price. Save yourself $300 and go to Texas Roadhouse for a better meal.
The atmosphere is about the best that this place has going for it. Yet even that had issues. While everything looked nice the table we sat at was broken and we had to ask the host for help fixing it.
The food was standard fair and quality wise was more on par with a nicer restaurant than for a higher end steakhouse. I was not impressed by anything. Especially considering how much they charged for everything. For this price, dining should be a special event. Rare did nothing to make it a memorable experience.
I take clients to nice random steakhouses on a monthly basis all over the country. Rare does not compare with these other restaurants and is easily in the bottom 10% of steakhouses. It's the first time I have ever contemplated asking for my money back.
Let's start with drinks.
My wife and I ordered two old fashioneds. While they were ok, they were nothing special. Grade C for a regular bar. Grade D- for a steakhouse.
Bread.
The 'bread service' was two COLD and messy pop overs that couldn't melt the strawberry butter that came with them. I've never had a cold pop over before. They are very disappointing. Grade F.
Appetizer:
The fried calamari is a mixed bag. The calamari themselves were good. Cooked perfectly with a light breading and good seasoning. The problem was they were mixed with fried peppers and carrots that easily took up 40-60% of the dish. Worse the spicy peppers looked identical to the calamari and I found myself eating far too many peppers thinking I was eating a piece of calamari. The fried carrots were tasteless and they only served to eat breading. Grade: D.
Salads
The salads were fairly good. No complaints. No compliments. Just two good salads. My wife had the chopped salad and ate the whole thing. I had the wedge and brought half home. Grade: C.
Sides
We ordered two sides.
Lobster Mac- a good lobster Mac that we both enjoyed. Grade: B.
Crispy Brussel Sprouts- fairly good, but not as crispy as I prefer and I was not a fan of the sauce (but that's a personal preference). Grade C+.
Mains
Lobster- the Lobster was cooked well and tasted great. Yet, it lacked any presentation one might expect for a $95 dollar plate. Grade: B.
Bone-In Dry Aged Ribeye- this had to be the biggest disappointment of the night. It was cold, undercooked (yet chared), and had low to no seasoning on it. I order my steak medium rare, and it came out blue in the middle, cool to the touch, and almost cold inside. The manager had them throw it back under the broiler and while that solved the temperature issue, it left much of the steak closer to medium or medium well.
I am not sure how this could happen. My wife's plate was so hot our server had issues placing it on the table, and had to move the serving tray closer to make it a shorter shift. My plate had no such heat issues.
Rare is a steakhouse. If they have to get one thing right, it's the steak. In that, they failed to deliver.
Grade: F.
Desert
We had the creme brulee for desert. It was good. Not sure why the server would tell us that they normally have fun flavors and right now they only have plain vanilla. I mean, why call that out? At that point I had almost given up hope. Oh well.
Grade: B.
Service
The service was just OK. A very nice lady who did a serviceable job. She was a little slow and forgot both orders for a beer and I had to remind her. She left lots of plates and dishes on the table during service and we had to ask for them to ve removed.
The other servers seemed to really lack attention to what was going on. The father at the table next to us spilled a coke all over the table and no one noticed and no one came to help. One even tried to serve appetizers on top of the coke before realizing that there was an issue.
Overall Service Grade: Normal restaurant: C-....

Read moreOn my 2024 Tour of Steakhouses, this was at the top of the list. Where do I even begin? First I have to say we were well taken care of by the General Manager Devante and our server Alex. Both individuals made the experience a 10/10. The location is easy to find right off of Michigan, near the lake. There is a garage across the street with affordable parking by the hour but Ubering is a safer bet because the cocktail menu is amazing. We sat in one of their gorgeous booths in the back by their library. Although their dining room isn't enormous, there are plenty of seats and two private rooms. I think they utilize them as general seating when they aren't booked for parties, but again, plenty of room in the dining area. The bar was also large with a decent amount of seating. We started with martinis and calamari. The calamari comes with a spicy and a sweet dipping sauce. Per Alex's recommendation, we split the chopped salad. It's full of vegetables that compliment each other perfectly. They also bring enormous flaky popovers with a honey butter. You'll start with half because they're so big, but you'll finish the whole thing because addicting. For dinner I had the NY Strip and my friend had the Bottleneck. Both were cooked perfectly. We went with creamed corn (very strong smoky flavor), broccolini, and lobster mac. The lobster mac had a generous amount of lobster so I was very happy. For dinner we split their crème brûlée special, which was s'more flavored. Yum! We each also got some espresso because all of that eating had us exhausted. Alex and Devante stopped by the table periodically to chat. We had such a great time making small talk and learning about the establishment. After dinner we explore their library which is full of vintage books. It's hard to choose a highlight to our trip because everything was perfection. We haven't stopped talking about our visit and are recommending everyone try out this top tier...
