I like the pizza at Sal's. As others have noted, it's definitely a shady area, mostly at night. I work evenings downtown, so every so often, Sal's is the only place open within walking distance. Their slices are expensive, but buying the entire pie is a decent price for a pizza this big and being downtown.
The only reason I didn't 5-star Sal's is that tonight I tried the bacon cheeseburger pizza. I usually order pepperoni and sausage, and I've never had a bad pie. Tonight I decided to try their bacon cheeseburger. When they handed me the box, I asked if the pickles were on the pizza. Most places serve the pickles on the side, but they weren't handing me another box. They told me, "No pickles on the bacon cheeseburger pizza!"
I asked, "Do I get them on the side then?"
Again, "No pickles with the bacon cheeseburger pizza!"
Really?
Every other place I've ever ordered the bacon cheeseburger pizza, it includes pickles either on the side or on the pizza. And I've eaten a LOT of bacon cheeseburger pizzas. Moreover, Sal's OWN WEBSITE says pickles are included on the bacon cheeseburger pizza.
Anyway, I didn't want a squabble as it was 11PM and I had to get back to work. I got to work and opened up the pizza, and there are strips of bacon, instead of crushed bacon. Ugh.
So. For some bites I actually get to taste the bacon. For NO bites do I get to taste the pickles.
I'm really not sure what pizza this is. You just can't have a bacon cheeseburger pizza without pickles and bacon in every bite.
Sorry Sal's. I'll be back, most definitely. But I won't be ordering the bacon cheeseburger pizza again.
And for anyone out there that gives Sal's bacon cheeseburger pizza a try, and let's suppose it's your first bacon cheeseburger pizza, and comes to the conclusion, "I hate bacon cheeseburger pizza's. They're gross!" Give a bacon cheeseburger pizza a try anywhere else. At Sal's, you're just not eating it right. It's a misrepresentation of what a bacon cheeseburger pizza is,...
Read moreI’ve been to sals over a hundred times! Every time I am met with a hostile demeanor and I understand business is business but I’ve been charge different prices depending on the worker and the night like tonight February 9, 2018 I was charge $5.00 for a specialty pizza and the dude in front of me was charged $4.50 . We both had specialty pizzas but I am 20 year old African American(black) the other was an older white dude maybe mid-late 20’s. When I asked him how much a specialty buffalo chicken pizza is without looking up cause I know it’s usually around $4.50-$4.80 , the dude replies $5.00 I chuckled and said what y’all upd the prices per slice or something he said jts always been the price I look up seen that it stated $4.50 specialty pizzas , and said “it’s not $4.50-$4.80? “ he said nope I said “I’ve been here many times and I usually pay between $4.50-$4.80 “ he dismissed me and said “if you don’t want it leave cause I got other customers behind you” ....
This is unacceptable as a customer and as a black community supporting this business . Period I know for a fact that they will take advantage of their customer they find vulnerable to manipulate, and they have never truly produced a welcoming environment to young African Americans men in general. If it happens 2x to me I KNOW it’s happens to others ....
Read moreOrdered 2 pizzas and ate there with my family of 8 people. When we left we were assaulted by their security guard who followed us up the street and spayed us all with pepper spray including my wife and 2 other young women. He hollered that we were "priveleged white people". I was blinded by the spray and luckily 2 helpful bystanders helped us as he fled the area. One of my relatives happens to be an off duty officer who has training in pepper spray and was able to recover and was able to summon a police officer who took a report. We await the investigation (there is public video in this area) for a mass assault on my entire party. Keep looking online and you'll find approximately 26 other similar reports of this behavior from this business and/or the so called 'security gaurd' they employ! No food is worth the safety and security of you and your family! Then there is the fact that the place has to consider employing a security gaurd.....any other pizza place you know that needs that? Common sense tells you Sal's on 5th has a major problem. I unfortunately was not informed prior to going here......if your reading this, I hope I save you from being innocently assaulted, robbed or being a victim of this place's incredibly negligent...
