I found Uncommon Grounds Coffeehouse on a list of best coffee shops from google while I was looking for places to take my bookclub. We (3 of us) were all really excited to check it out since the pictures and description online was one big raving review about the atmosphere and the award winning food/drinks. what the description failed to mention was the extremely rude service and the cramped spacing. When I arrived with my two friends the place seems like a dream, the barista behind the counter was polite albit floundering in all the ordered being rung up and the place was clean and cozy. Once my group got our drink and pastries (easily $15 each with tip) we sat down at the only space big enough to accommodate three people. We had just started to talk about our book and how cozy the shop felt when an old man started pacing around the room. We felt like this man was scoping out each of the customers which made us weary of him. Once he came over to our table he told us that we weren't supposed to be sitting there because they always keep it open just in case a large party of six or more comes in and that we should find another seat. The booth was barely biggenout for four people and the table only three, we were the biggest group in the establishment so we figured it wouldn't be a problem. When we did not immediately get up to leave the man, who at this point we are assuming is the owner, came back over and started bother us. He kept hovering until we were so uncomfortable, we felt he was passively kicking us out. As we packed up our books and grabbed our drinks to leave the man when up to another woman who was focusing on her work and told her that if she didn't go buy something she would have to leave. The woman said that she was going to she was just waiting for the line ot be a little shorter the man got agitated and stated that the line would be this long until 9pm (the time they close). It is crazy to me that this man doesn't seem to care at all about repeat business as I cannot imagine anyone wanting to come back to a place where they were kicked out of forced to spend money before they were ready. Not to mention the whole time this man was going around kicking people out and making the one with food or drink uncomfortable the barista behind the bar was absolutely drowning in the coffee they were attempting to keep up with. It really is a shame that the service was so terribly rude, because the food and drinks were actually pretty good and we would have returned had we not been kicked out. Needless to say, my bookclub and I will be searching for a new...
Read moreUncommon Coffee Grounds is an enigma wrapped in burlap and steeped in espresso. Heralded by local publications and independent critics, my experience, however, was bitter-sweet.
Upon entering, I was greeted by a warm, inviting ambience, a subtle nod to the quintessential bohemian coffee house charm. However, the cafe seemed to struggle under the weight of its own popularity. At prime time, around 6 PM, only a single barista was holding the fort, battling the onslaught of caffeine-deprived patrons. While the owner's nonchalant presence added to the frustration, it was heartening to see the lone warrior handling the task with unwavering dedication.
The Hazelnut coffee, a house specialty, was unfortunately a letdown. The overpowering flavor felt akin to sipping on pure hazelnut syrup, an unbalanced indulgence even for the most adventurous palate.
Space, an essential component of any cafe experience, was another limitation. The establishment seemed ill-equipped to handle larger groups, potentially impeding intimate conversations or solitary reading sessions.
While I appreciate the bustling energy and the hard work of the staff, a 25-minute wait for coffee seems excessive. A more streamlined service process and additional staffing during busy hours could significantly enhance the customer experience.
Uncommon Coffee Grounds, with its immense popularity among the younger crowd, is teetering on the precipice of greatness. However, it requires careful introspection and appropriate action to truly live up to its potential. In its current state, the experience, much like their Hazelnut coffee, leaves a somewhat...
Read moreCame here with some friends on a Saturday night and it wasn't busy (surprisingly). As we were getting settling in to the table we sat at one of the employees came up to us and asked who had ordered at the time only one of us had ordered before we could say anything but that he asked us to hurry up and drink our drinks. Why? because he said he needed that table for a "large group" but they're were many other places to sit including tables larger than the one we sat at. We decided we weren't going to order anything more because of this terribly rude encounter. After we got a drink he continued to harass us telling us to hurry when the drink was extremely hot and barely drinkable. We ended up leaving before we finished because it got so uncomfortable. As we were leaving the "large group" was a group of 4 and they ended up sitting and another one of the open tables that we weren't seated at. They're "amazing" chai is anything average at best and much to sweet. You can easily replicate it by ordering something at Starbucks. Do yourself a favor and skip this place.
Another time when he came up to us he saw we had bottles on our backpacks and proceeded to tell us that it was against city code that we couldn’t have outside drinks which is understandable if we had even drank them or had them out but the drinks were in our backpacks.
Apparently this is an issue with this place with people getting kicked out for not ordering drinks...
