This place was nice for sushi rolls, but the entrees and starters were seriously lacking. I’m not even critical of food, I just expect to like the flavor and presentation of whatever I order when I treat myself to a meal out. We went yesterday (2-10-18) because of their Fugu. My husband got the fugu and I got the veggie tempura and Katsudon. The tempura was...just huge clumps of vegetables together. Flavor was fine, but it was hard to eat because the fried chunks were the size of my fist. My entree, the katsudon, was actually terrible. The katsu (breaded chicken) was mushy, and the “sauce” that was on the katsu was SOLIDIFIED. I’ve made better katsudon myself at home so maybe I set the bar too high for myself, but the presentation of my entree was so terrible. As soon as she server sat it down in front of me, I was like “oh no...”. I could tell by looking at it that it was not going to taste good. The top layer was solid, as I said, and almost grey in color. The rice itself that was below the katsu was mushy. The whole bowl of food was near flavorless. I never do this, but I just left my entree there when we left and didn’t bring it home as leftovers. I ALWAYS bring home leftovers because I figure I can spice it up with salt and whatever and eat it the next day, but I chose not to bring home my $14 entree. It takes a lot to disappoint me because I will eat anything really, but I just can’t express my disappointment enough. We won’t be returning to Origami. Maybe it was just a bad night for the cooks, but it only takes one to make a customer choose another restaurant. Go to Wakame instead - never been...
Read moreUsed to be my favorite sushi branch where I made a special trip down to the cities just to go every year. The quality and management appears to have been under performing as of late. Still a great place to go to as they try their hand at seasonal specials. Some items like fugu, you can't get anywhere else in MN.
I try to leave 5 stars for each review and remove stars based on grievances.
1 star lost for quality of food: Our order of teriyaki chicken came with the sauce not cooked in, so it was a dried up chicken dish slathered with soy soy flavored jam. The ebi shumai is usually our go to favorite, but they have long removed the mustard sauce that came with the appetizer. Also, the shumai was noticeably saltier than normal and had a stronger fish odor.
1 star lost for service: We were greeted with a impromptu baby faced bouncer on our last visit who seated us in a reserved area--which for some reason was a good idea at the time? So when the reserved guests came, the staff displayed the work ethic of a millennial slacktivist and proceeded to scowl at us instead of getting our bill. They waited so long to get our bill (30 minutes, no joke) that their reserved guests started glaring at us (which was great, because these guys literally just met each other and found a common interest in hating other people that they literally just met). This grievance excludes the fancy dude with a skull ring, and the server who actually looks like a bouncer, those are...
Read moreAs an avid sushi fan, this experience was disappointing to say the least. The host that greeted us was very pleasant. Server attitude was poor and very lackluster. It was decently full but not busy. We started with the shishitos and ordered wine. The appetizer came before our drinks which was odd. The server spilled a decent amount of sake from the flight we ordered all over the table and didn’t clean it up. The peppers were tasteless but we dipped them in soy sauce. My fiancé ordered the ramen which he said was honestly terrible. It was bland and he said he’s had better 99 cent packaged ramen. Also there were toppings missing that were listed on the menu. I ordered the Deluxe platter. Very underwhelming especially for the $35 price point. The quantity of sushi was small, the quality of the fish itself was fine, except for the tuna. It was oddly rubbery and tasteless. The cuts of the fish on the nigiri were atrocious. Sloppy, wrong angle, uneven. I’ve had nicer looking nigiri from Target. The roll tasted good but was sloppily made and was falling apart. I’d rather spend $5 more dollars for the Sushi Bucket at Momos, share with my fiancé, and leave with leftovers. The ambiance was pleasant and beautiful. Maybe they shouldn’t have spent so much money on decor and invested more in proper training of their staff and higher quality ingredients.
I hate to be so blunt, but the experience was quite bad. We won’t...
