Local police and delivery guys love this spot. Everyone's welcome and will be well fed. You know all those Cafe's an dinners in tv dramas where everyone is greeted like family and feels instantly comfortable? I managed to find one - Bob's Downtown! I asked a regular customer for suggestions and enjoyed the Bob's breakfast - two eggs, biscuit, grits and bacon...they even included a half ring of pineapple as an edible garnish. A filling breakfast for just 6.50! Bar seating faces the kitchen or the spacious wrap around windows with a scenic view of downtown. I have news plays quietly in the far corner while easy listening tunes mesh with the muted clatter and chatter of the kitchen and customers. Beverages of all types on sale, but the coffee and sweet tea are choice. Comfy, affordable, yummy and adjacent to free parking - I'll be back whenever I'm passing through. 😉

Let me start by saying that 3 stars doesn't mean "bad" to me. To me, 3 stars is like getting a "C or C+" on your report card. You didn't fail, BUT you didn't knock it outta the park. I'm still moving around in Alabama and gave this place a try. I actually like the " Old school diner feel". I think the menu has a good variety, and the servers were nice to us. I thought it was cool how the servers knew some customers by name. This place does feel comfortable when you come in. The food was ok. I had French toast, bacon, eggs, and the house potatoes. My food was hot and fresh. The French toast had some delicious cream (sweet butter) on it. The eggs, bacon, and potatoes were alright. My companion ordered the Gouda shrimp and grits. Now, these actually had the potential to be quite tasty, but the grits were luke warm and lumpy. We really didn't taste any gouda either. We enjoyed the seasoning they had on the grits. I'll probably try them again because there were some other things on the menu I'm interested in giving a try.

Good food and price! Small and little dinghy place though. (Review from first visit 3 months ago) Second visit: I decided to go there today for a decent lunch. My schedule was full so I decided to get my order to go. I ordered the fish and shrimp combo, with two sides. The first issue I noticed were the two waitresses were not very polite and talking amongst each other with some very personal issues, but I overlooked that. After I left and got back to my office I began to unbox my food. What I found was one piece of fish, teeny tiny little shrimp that were hidden under the piece of fish, undercooked okra and a side of squash and zucchini that had way too much pepper on it. The taste was terrible and portion embarrassing. I didn’t even try to eat it. I was so hungry I had to find something else to eat in my office.

I was blown away by this small little diner just outside of downtown Mobile. The gumbo was hearty and spicy and they did not use rice as a filler, so the whole bowl was gumbo. I also had the seafood etouffee and I couldn't stop eating it. The meal came with two sides and a bread. The fried okra was good as was the cucumber salad. I'm not a huge fan of the Mexican style cornbread, but this one wasn't bad. Lunch prices were very reasonable. Next time I'm back in town, I'm coming here again! Edit: it's been two years since my last visit, so I had to try them again. I'm happy to say that Bob's is still fabulous! I had the cornbread battered catfish over the gouda cheese grits. I loved it! The flavors and textures meshed so well that I was truly sad when I had finished my plate. I'm coming back my next trip out here.

I really enjoyed this place. looking for a good place to have breakfast and we ran across this place. It was nice they have outside and inside seating. The seating inside runs along the wall. I don't think I would like it when it's crowded because the seating is real tightly spaced. But it was not busy so we had plenty of elbow room. The waitresses were nice the food came out fast. The eggs we're cooked perfectly but you do have to season your own food. It was a good change-of-pace if you're looking for something different. It's a little pricey for me but I would go back when I want to treat myself but not very often because of the price.
