My date and I were waiting for a table to come available across the street at Squid Ink when we decided to kill some time in The Haunted Book Shop, and man oh man, am I happy that we did. This place was wonderful! Mr. Bingley, the adorable kitty cat, who was asleep in the window, greeted me as soon as I walked in the store (people tell me that I am a cat whisperer and it was quite charming for the little guy to give me big meows and affection right off the bat). My date perused the first floor (of three) and I got kitty lovins until the restaurant called us. We got such a good taste of welcomeness, inclusivity and overall great vibes, that we beelined for this book store when we were done with our meal. I explored all three floors and found multiple books to buy for many of my family members for future holiday gifts. Am I the only one who has family members who are difficult to buy presents for? No? Go here! I asked multiple employees to help me find nice reads pertaining to others’ different interests. I have no idea about anime (no judgement, just not my thing), but the nice guy working on the third floor got some specific info about types and styles of anime my mom and sister like, and I ended up spending about $100 just on things for them. Worth it! I also found a queer-positive, explanatory, animated and light read for my 14 year old sister who doesn’t know her sexual identity yet, but knows she is not necessarily straight. I love that they have a little bit of everything for everyone. My date adored Mr. Bingley so much that she bought a fridge magnet of him - which, to me, is comical but quite endearing. I highly recommend visiting...
Read moreNothing beats grabbing a book and a bite. Catch some shade in Bienville sqaure and enjoy yourself. Update: it has been 3 years since I first encountered the Haunted Bookshop. I have found friends and guides for my reading. I trust Alex to this day to analyze my strange tastes in books. They deliver every single time. I have found my forever bookshop. You can too, talk to them, tell them your favorites, and they will deliver as you pet the adorable cat known as Mr. Bingley. I am 740 miles away from by birth town but I have never felt so at home. Thank you, I am ecstatic that your new location will be here soon. If you want hand, let me know. Edit: Here we go again! Alex you nailed it! I don't know how you recommended another excellent series, then another. The Haunted Bookshop always delivers. You will always be my favorite paper & ink dealer. Can't wait to stop by again and again. This place is much more than a simple bookshop. They really know how to introduce you to new authors. Alex recommended one book of a series. Next thing you know I'm 7 books deep and I am craving, absolutely raving for the next one. Well played,...
Read moreI first came to visit this place on my vacation to the lovely city of Mobile. It's in a good spot downtown, and a very helpful clerk named Alex helped me come away with something I enjoyed very much. I'm not a big fan of amazon, so I asked if I could order from them in my home state, and handily they have a website you can order from, but google doesn't seem to like me posting it.. Now, what makes this really good is that if I am searching for a book and give them a ring, Alex still helps me. His ability to turn a nebulous list of tastes and other favorites into precisely the book I want is phenomenal. I think of him as my 'book concierge' and he fills the role quite well. This began years ago, and I still do business with them and him today, and highly recommend checking this place out. Ask for Alex.
Oh, and there are no ghosts, so the paranoid amongst you can rejoice, and the silly folk should still keep it in mind as a great place...
